Adam A. Divine, EMT-P,
PI
Objectives
• By the End of this lesson:
• We will know who needs an AED
• We will know the 4 Universal Steps in the
use of an AED
• We will have a basic understand of a
Pacemaker, AICD and an LVAD
• We will know to do with Medication patches
as well as metal surfaces
• We will know the difference
between Biphasic and Monophasic
Introduction to the AED
• The Automated External Defibrillator
• Belfast in 1966, First Pre-Hospital
• Oregon in 1969, First Pre-Hospital
without a doctor present
Who Needs an AED
• People who are Pulseless and Apenic;
often referred to as Cardiac Arrest
• pulse·less/ (puls´les) lacking a pulse.
− Adjective: Lacking a Pulse
• ap·ne·ic (ap'nē-ik)
− Adjective: Referring to Apnea,
Breathless
• ap·ne·a (ap'nē-ă)
− Adjective: Referring to apnea,
breathless
4 Universal Steps
 Turn on the AED
 Select and Apply Pads
 Analyze Heart Rhythm
 Deliver Shock/Resume CPR
Turn in On
• Locate the Power Button and Turn
On the AED. A Simple First Step
Select and Attach Pads
• Selecting the Defibrillation Pads
that are right for your patient.
• Adult Pads vs.
• Pediatric Pads
Select and Attach Pads
• Defibrillation Pad Placement
• Anterior – Lateral
• Anterior – Posterior
Analyzing
• The AED will be analyzing the
heart rhythm
• How many different heart
rhythms can the AED pick out?
• One….
Deliver Shock or no
• Shock Advised
• No Shock Advised
Special Considerations
• Implanted Devices such as
Pacemakers, LVAD, and AICD
• Medication Patches
• Metal Surfaces
Pacemakers and AICDs
• Pacemakers
• AICD
• LVAD
Medication Patches
• If you see
Medication
Patches on the
patient’s chest,
Remove them…
save them for
