How effective is the combination of products and texts
1. Q2
How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
2. Across all three of my products the title remained the same (Below The Belt) this
helped with consistency meaning that each product could be related to each other
easily, this was also an example of synergy within my products. With all three
sharing the same title they share the same text design and layout, the title across
all of the products was presented in bold in order to make it stand out against the
background colour block.
4. On both the documentary and radio trailer the voiceover was
presented by the same person, this adds extra consistency to
the products which helps to avoid confusion amongst the
audience. The use of one narrator also helped to separate
sections of the documentary and set the topic in the opening
section of the documentary after the opening titles.

6. The Channel 4 ident/logo is seen only on my print advert which benefits the
audience by informing them of the channel it is being broadcasted on without
having to make them read the information on the print advert. On my print advert
the chosen ident is the same as the one used on the print adverts belonging to
Channel 4 so it is easily recognisable. Channel 4 was also mentioned on the radio
trailer which gave the same effect as placing the logo on promotional material, it
was placed alongside the scheduling information which helped the audience to
understand when and where the documentary is being aired.
7. On the print advert the main image conveyed the theme well, with the theme being
set around female boxing it was a logical choice to have a female featured on the
print advert which would immediately convey the theme of the documentary. The
female in the image was also the dominant feature of the advert which also
established that the documentary would feature female boxers as the dominant
theme of the documentary. The use of a longshot on my print advert helped to
convey the belief of British Olympian Natasha Jonas (who was one of my
interviewees) that female boxing had come a long way but still had a long way to
go which was a key topic within my documentary product. Lighting was also
considered when taking the main image because the use of a light image reflected
the hopefulness of female boxers striving for the equality of their sport in
comparison the male side of the sport.
9. The radio trailer was built mainly of soundbites from my main documentary
product, the aim of this was to create a product from the most relevant pieces of
audio in my product. This benefited the audience because it presented them with
parts of the documentary which may draw them in enough to watch the complete
documentary, this proved beneficial to myself because from my audience
feedback I learnt that my radio trailer did deliver soundbites that would draw in my
audience. My audience can easily identify or link between my three products due
to the colour scheme, title and general content being consistent across all three
products.
10. Across my products (mainly the radio trailer and print advert) the slogan varied.
On the radio trailer the slogan was presented as ‘Join the fight for equality’ which
was commanding to the audience and was intended to draw in a large audience.
The print advert had a different adaptation of this slogan ‘Fighting for equality’
which was intended to set the theme of the documentary rather than command the
audience. The difference in slogans was due to the way it sounded when spoken
for the radio trailer, and on the print advert ‘Join the fight for equality’ sounded out
of place so adjustments were made to better suit it. However this could cause
issues when the audience try to link my products together and find different
slogans between my products and may ruin the synergy of my product and
ancillary texts.
11. There was only one main issue of continuity in my product which was the different
slogans seen on my promotional material however I believe that this had no
negative effects on my products and instead helped my product to relay my
chosen topic to the audience.
