Meet our students
taylorscollege.edu.au  98  Taylors High School program Meet our students
As a High School student,I always knew I wanted to progress
to the University of Sydney.Taylors High School gave me the
opportunity of attending university open days, events and
even lectures there.
For as long as I can remember,I have always wanted to do a
Pharmacydegree.InYear12 however,I startedtofocus on other
options, and the person who helped me most was my career
adviser and English teacher at
TaylorsHighSchool,JennieMasia.
Shehelpedmetolookatdifferent
degrees,different universities
and different options.
Thething I admirethe most aboutTaylors High School isthe
support I receivedfrom everyone atthe school.Iwouldn't have
been ableto achievewhat I have achievedwithoutthat caring
environment.Whenthings got difficult backat home,in Syria,
I reached outforsupportfrom counsellors andfelt it made a
great difference.When I approached myteachersforassistance,
theyneverfailedto help me.
I used to study at a local government high school.I transferred
to Taylors College last year.I thinkthe facilities, the environment
and the resources here are much betterthan the local school.
I feel more at home.
After my HSC I'm thinking
about going to the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music
because I want to study
music in the future.Music is
the thing that I always love.My music teacher at Taylors is very
friendly and very professional too.
Taylors has helped me in many different ways. They provide
a lot of useful information, not onlyfrom textbooks, but also
in regards to the criteria ofthe exams and several useful tips
to help us study and get good marks. They also help us to
become more independent and able to speak English better.
Taylors College was recommended to my parents and me by
an acquaintance and we instantly liked it,so we didn’t check out
other schools.I like the friendly atmosphere here and the fact
that the teachers are really close to the students.
When I was in Vietnam,I was a bit above average but not a top
student.At Taylors I think I
am quite different,because
I understand the courses
more.The classes are small,
so the teacher can focus
more on each student,so I
think I have improved quite a lot since I was in Vietnam.
I am also a Year 12 Leader.Leaders are chosen bytheir
classmates to represent them and theirviews at meetings. If
theywant to introduce changes, they can tell us and we will go
and talkto teachers in the school and we will make something
better. It's a great feeling that people trust me.
Being Australian, learning about other cultures was always
important to me.Taylors High School is a very multi-cultural
place,and that's why I chose to studythere.Flexible start dates
were also a great
advantage.By joining the
extra-curricular activities,
I was able to develop my
self confidence and make
newfriends.
After I moved to Taylors High School I was able to dramatically
improve my grades due to the supportive environment and
friendlyteachers.
Afterfinishing my HSC at Taylors,I went to China forthree
months to teach English to kindergarten children, which was
an amazing experience.
I was a little shy before enrolling at Taylors
High School, but being in constant interaction
with students from all around the world made
me become much more outgoing.
I have always felt that I was so luckyto be
a student at Taylors High School, and not
at any other private or public schools.
Taylors College was recommended to us
and we instantly liked it.I like the friendly
atmosphere here and the fact that the
teachers are really close to the students.
Taylors provide a lot of useful information,
not onlyfrom textbooks, but also in regards
to the criteria ofthe exams and several useful
tips to help us study.

average length of staff service
I started teaching in 1985 and began working at Taylors College
in 2000.Classes here are structured to caterto the needs of
international students and are designed to academically prepare
them forfurther study.
ESL(English as a Second
Language) is predominant,
and ourteachers are experts
inthis area.AtTaylors,
students are given more
responsibilityforlearning
and as a result develop betterindependent learning skills.
Taylors College provides quality,opportunity,understanding,trust
and respecttogetherwith a high standard ofacademic learning.
As Dean ofthe High School I have the responsibility of making
sure that all the students successfully complete the Higher
School Certificate (HSC) and progress onto their chosen course
at the universitythey have selected.
It is my responsibilityto
ensure that students elect
courses that suit their
interests,needs andtalents.
In addition,I am also
responsible for ensuring
that all students progress
successfullythrough Years
10,11 and 12,during which time they become mature young
men and women, readyto face the challenges that the world
has to offerthem.
The environment ofTaylors is very different from that of other
schools; it is more of a university environment. The students
design their own study program by electing subjects they enjoy
and excel in.We can even accommodate students who wish to
studytheir native language as part ofthe HSC.
International students have a need to be
supported on theirfirst journey in a new
country,a new culture and a language that
theywant to master.I enjoy being an
important part ofthis journeyforthem.
I particularly enjoyteaching international
students because it is incredibly rewarding
to see howfarthey come academically and
personally in the short time they are with us.
I am proud ofthe fact that we have had
very successful HSC results.Our students
have attained the highest scores in NSW
in subjects such as English as a Second
Language,Mathematics and in Chinese
Background Speakers.
I encourage discussion and questioning
in class and often use personal experiences
to help explain concepts.
I have worked at Taylors College for 14 years.I help students to
prepare fortheirfutures byteaching them English skills, study
skills and time management skills.More importantly,I encourage
them to work hard,be
optimistic and confident.
Myteaching style is firm
and fair.I believe students
need boundaries and they
also want to be heard.
I particularly enjoyteaching international students because it is
incredibly rewarding to see howfarthey come academically and
personally in the short time they are with us.
The benefits of studying High School at Taylors College in
Sydney are that students are exposed to a variety of cultures,
are taught byvery committed teachers and they are encouraged
to achieve their goals.
Also,Sydney is the best city in the world!
I have been a teacherfor over 20 years, and have worked in
a diverse range of schools. My role includes teaching English,
running the Study Skills
program and assisting
students in making informed
university choices.
I encourage discussion and
questioning in class and often use personal experiences to
help explain concepts.Atouch of humour is also present in
my classroom!
My advice to parents or students considering Taylors College
is to seize this opportunity; it will be one ofthe best decisions
you make.

  • 6. Meet our students taylorscollege.edu.au  98  Taylors High School program Meet our students As a High School student,I always knew I wanted to progress to the University of Sydney.Taylors High School gave me the opportunity of attending university open days, events and even lectures there. For as long as I can remember,I have always wanted to do a Pharmacydegree.InYear12 however,I startedtofocus on other options, and the person who helped me most was my career adviser and English teacher at TaylorsHighSchool,JennieMasia. Shehelpedmetolookatdifferent degrees, different universities and different options. Thething I admirethe most aboutTaylors High School isthe support I receivedfrom everyone atthe school.Iwouldn't have been ableto achievewhat I have achievedwithoutthat caring environment.Whenthings got difficult backat home,in Syria, I reached outforsupportfrom counsellors andfelt it made a great difference. When I approached myteachersforassistance, theyneverfailedto help me. I used to study at a local government high school.I transferred to Taylors College last year.I thinkthe facilities, the environment and the resources here are much betterthan the local school. I feel more at home. After my HSC I'm thinking about going to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music because I want to study music in the future.Music is the thing that I always love.My music teacher at Taylors is very friendly and very professional too. Taylors has helped me in many different ways. They provide a lot of useful information, not onlyfrom textbooks, but also in regards to the criteria ofthe exams and several useful tips to help us study and get good marks. They also help us to become more independent and able to speak English better. Taylors College was recommended to my parents and me by an acquaintance and we instantly liked it,so we didn’t check out other schools.I like the friendly atmosphere here and the fact that the teachers are really close to the students. When I was in Vietnam,I was a bit above average but not a top student. At Taylors I think I am quite different, because I understand the courses more. The classes are small, so the teacher can focus more on each student,so I think I have improved quite a lot since I was in Vietnam. I am also a Year 12 Leader.Leaders are chosen bytheir classmates to represent them and theirviews at meetings. If theywant to introduce changes, they can tell us and we will go and talkto teachers in the school and we will make something better. It's a great feeling that people trust me. Being Australian, learning about other cultures was always important to me.Taylors High School is a very multi-cultural place, and that's why I chose to studythere.Flexible start dates were also a great advantage.By joining the extra-curricular activities, I was able to develop my self confidence and make newfriends. After I moved to Taylors High School I was able to dramatically improve my grades due to the supportive environment and friendlyteachers. Afterfinishing my HSC at Taylors,I went to China forthree months to teach English to kindergarten children, which was an amazing experience. I was a little shy before enrolling at Taylors High School, but being in constant interaction with students from all around the world made me become much more outgoing. I have always felt that I was so luckyto be a student at Taylors High School, and not at any other private or public schools. Taylors College was recommended to us and we instantly liked it.I like the friendly atmosphere here and the fact that the teachers are really close to the students. Taylors provide a lot of useful information, not onlyfrom textbooks, but also in regards to the criteria ofthe exams and several useful tips to help us study. In addition,I am also responsible for ensuring that all students progress successfullythrough Years 10,11 and 12,during which time they become mature young men and women, readyto face the challenges that the world has to offerthem. The environment ofTaylors is very different from that of other schools; it is more of a university environment. The students design their own study program by electing subjects they enjoy and excel in.We can even accommodate students who wish to studytheir native language as part ofthe HSC. International students have a need to be supported on theirfirst journey in a new country,a new culture and a language that theywant to master.I enjoy being an important part ofthis journeyforthem. I particularly enjoyteaching international students because it is incredibly rewarding to see howfarthey come academically and personally in the short time they are with us. I am proud ofthe fact that we have had very successful HSC results. Our students have attained the highest scores in NSW in subjects such as English as a Second Language,Mathematics and in Chinese Background Speakers. I encourage discussion and questioning in class and often use personal experiences to help explain concepts. I have worked at Taylors College for 14 years.I help students to prepare fortheirfutures byteaching them English skills, study skills and time management skills.More importantly,I encourage them to work hard,be optimistic and confident. Myteaching style is firm and fair.I believe students need boundaries and they also want to be heard. I particularly enjoyteaching international students because it is incredibly rewarding to see howfarthey come academically and personally in the short time they are with us. The benefits of studying High School at Taylors College in Sydney are that students are exposed to a variety of cultures, are taught byvery committed teachers and they are encouraged to achieve their goals. Also,Sydney is the best city in the world!
