HISTORY
 Toshiba was searching for a technology that would replace
old data-storage media
 Japanese engineer Masuoka Fujio invented it in the early
1980s
 Flash was named by Ariizumi Shoji, a coworker of Masuoka
 The name came from its erasing nature
WHAT IS A FLASH MEMORY?
 Solid state, non-volatile memory chip
 Stores electrical charges
 Belongs to the EEPROM (Electric Erasable Programmable Read
Only Memory) Group
 Memory cells are made of floating-gate transistors
 Light, compact, shock resistant, energy efficient
TYPES OF FLASH MEMORY
NOR FLASH MEMORY
 High transfer efficiency
 Slow write and erase speeds
 Programs can be executed directly
 Cost effective in small capacity of 1 – 4 MB
NAND FLASH MEMORY
 Accessed alike block devices
 Faster erases,sequential writes,and reads
 High capacity data storage
HOW DOES IT WORK
 Two gates on top control & floating (P type)
 A cell sensor monitors the level of charge passing
through the floating gate
 If flow>50% value is 1
 Below 50% value is 0

HOW LONG DOES FLASH MEMORY LAST?
 Generally speaking, a Flash Drive can be used between 10,000 – 100,000 write/erase cycles
 The data will normally stay valid for a period of up to 15 years.You can format it and reuse
again for another 10-15 years
 Frequently used Flash Drives however will require more care. Lifespan can be decreased
depending on how it is cared for.
 Day to day space, speed and longevity are updating in flash technology
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Durable and portable
Can be immersed in water
Read and erase easily
Supports a wide range of
systems
 Both nand and nor has limited
cycles
 About 100,000 is the typical
number
 Can get infected by virus
 When memory crashes all data
is lost
