Tooth Fairy Unit- 2016
Day 1: Introduction
Supplies: blue construction paper for each child, world puzzle map, colored globe, and plastic
circles for hemispheres, pencils, blue clay
Presentation:
1. Describe and discuss what the new unit that is beginning today is about. “We will be
studying different traditions from around the world about what you are supposed to do
with your teeth when they fall out. Before we start the stories, though, we need to look at
what our world looks like today”.
2. Take out the world puzzle map and reveal it to the children. Allow the children to notice
how there are two circles. Explain to the children “I’m going to show you how we get
from a spherical globe, which is round and three-dimensional, to a flat circular map. Take
the blue sphere of clay and then cut it in half. Lay the two hemispheres or “half spheres”
next to each other and compare them to the world puzzle map. State, “When we draw the
world on paper, in order to see both sides of the round sphere, we have to cut it in half
and flatten it into a map”.
3. Pass out one piece of blue construction paper to each child. Demonstrate how to trace the
two hemispheres that also appear on the world puzzle map. Have the children trace the
two hemispheres.
Accomplishment: Trace the two hemispheres onto the blue paper.
Day 2: North America
Supplies: Throw Your Tooth on the Roof by Selby B. Beeler, world puzzle map, each child’s
hemispheres, orange construction paper, pencils, pin puncher, mat, tray, lined paper
Presentation:
1. Show the children where North America is on the world puzzle map and emphasize what
color it is- orange.
2. Read the Mexico story in Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.
3. Discuss the story and explain that they need to write a few sentences representing the
story on the lined paper.
4. As each child is dismissed and begins working, assist them in tracing North America on
his or her Western Hemisphere in the correct spot.
Accomplishment: In the morning, trace and pin punch North America onto the orange
construction paper. In the afternoon, write a few sentences of representation about the Mexico
story and trace North America onto the Western Hemisphere in its correct place.
2. Day 3: South America
Supplies: Throw Your Tooth on the Roof by Selby B. Beeler, world puzzle map, each child’s
hemispheres, pink construction paper, pencils, pin puncher, mat, tray, lined paper
Presentation:
1. Show the children where South America is on the world puzzle map and emphasize what
color it is- pink.
2. Read the Chile story in Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.
3. Discuss the story and explain that they need to write a few sentences representing the
story on the lined paper.
4. As each child is dismissed and begins working, assist them in tracing South America on
his or her Western Hemisphere in the correct spot.
Accomplishment: In the morning, trace and pin punch South America onto the pink construction
paper. In the afternoon, write a few sentences of representation about the Chile story and trace
South America onto the Western Hemisphere in its correct place.
Day 4: Africa
Supplies: Throw Your Tooth on the Roof by Selby B. Beeler, world puzzle map, each child’s
hemispheres, green construction paper, pencils, pin puncher, mat, tray, lined paper
Presentation:
1. Show the children where Africa is on the world puzzle map and emphasize what color it
is- green.
2. Read the Nigeria story in Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.
3. Discuss the story and explain that they need to write a few sentences representing the
story on the lined paper.
4. As each child is dismissed and begins working, assist them in tracing Africa on his or her
Eastern Hemisphere in the correct spot.
Accomplishment: In the morning, trace and pin punch Africa onto the green construction paper.
In the afternoon, write a few sentences of representation about the Nigeria story and trace Africa
onto the Eastern Hemisphere in its correct place.
Day 5: Europe

hemispheres, red construction paper, pencils, pin puncher, mat, tray, lined paper
Presentation:
1. Show the children where Europe is on the world puzzle map and emphasize what color it
is- red.
2. Read the Sweden story in Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.
3. Discuss the story and explain that they need to write a few sentences representing the
story on the lined paper.
4. As each child is dismissed and begins working, assist them in tracing Europe on his or
her Eastern Hemisphere in the correct spot.

the afternoon, write a few sentences of representation about the Sweden story and trace Europe
onto the Eastern Hemisphere in its correct place.
Day 6: Asia
Supplies: Throw Your Tooth on the Roof by Selby B. Beeler, world puzzle map, each child’s
hemispheres, yellow construction paper, pencils, pin puncher, mat, tray, lined paper
Presentation:
1. Show the children where Asia is on the world puzzle map and emphasize what color it is-
yellow.
2. Read the Nepal story in Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.
3. Discuss the story and explain that they need to write a few sentences representing the
story on the lined paper.
4. As each child is dismissed and begins working, assist them in tracing Asia on his or her
Eastern Hemisphere in the correct spot.
Accomplishment: In the morning, trace and pin punch Asia onto the yellow construction paper.
In the afternoon, write a few sentences of representation about the Nepal story and trace Asia
onto the Eastern Hemisphere in its correct place.
Day 7: Australia
Supplies: Throw Your Tooth on the Roof by Selby B. Beeler, world puzzle map, each child’s
hemispheres, brown construction paper, pencils, pin puncher, mat, tray, lined paper
Presentation:
1. Show the children where Australia is on the world puzzle map and emphasize what color
it is- brown.
2. Read the Aboriginal Australians story in Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.
3. Discuss the story and explain that they need to write a few sentences representing the
story on the lined paper. Also explain that no humans live in Antarctica therefore there
are no tooth fairy traditions that exist in that continent.
4. As each child is dismissed and begins working, assist them in tracing Australia and
Antarctica on his or her Eastern Hemisphere in the correct spot.
Accomplishment: In the morning, trace and pin punch Australia onto the brown construction
paper. Trace and pin punch Antarctica onto the white construction paper. In the afternoon, write
a few sentences of representation about the Aboriginal Australians story and trace Australia onto
the Eastern Hemisphere in its correct place.
4. Day 8: Paper-Mache Globes
Supplies: balloons blown up and tied, poster board cut into 5 inch strips and stapled in circle for
stand, flour, water, newspaper strips
Presentation:
1. Set up a station for paper mache at the tables on the tile floor.
2. Demonstrate how to dip strips into paper mache mixture, wipe off extra with fingers, and
place on globe in an interlocking pattern.
3. Give each child a balloon and stand.
4. Leave globes on the windowsill to dry.
5. At the end of the day, a teacher will check to make sure the balloons are covered enough.
The next morning, pop the balloons and remove them.
Accomplishment: Paper mache your globe
Day 9: Paint Globes
Supplies: paper mache globes, cardboard stands, jars of blue paint, paintbrushes
Presentation:
1. Set up a station for painting globes at the tables on the tile floor.
2. Demonstrate how to paint globe and turn to make sure you get the whole thing painted
blue for the oceans.
3. They leave on the windowsill to dry.
4. At the end of the day, the teacher will check to make sure they covered enough.
Accomplishment: Paint your globe
Day 10: Glue Continents on Globes
Supplies: painted globes, cardboard stands, glue, caps, spreaders, gluing mat, colored globe
Presentation:
1. Set up a station for painting globes at the tables on the tile floor.
2. Demonstrate how to start with North America, placing it in the northern hemisphere then
moving south to South America, etc.
3. Leave on the windowsill to dry.
Accomplishment: Glue continents to your globe.
5. Day 11: Modge Podge Globes
Supplies: completed globes, cardboard stands, jar of modge podge, paintbrush
Presentation:
1. Set up a station for modge podging globes at the tables on the tile floor.
2. Demonstrate how to paint over the whole globe with modge podge to seal it in and help
protect it from water.
3. Leave on the windowsill to dry.
Accomplishment: Modge podge your globe
Day12: Take Home Globes
Make fresh cardboard stands for children to take home globes on.
