There are 4 different themes for dramatic play: Housekeeping,
different kinds of work, fantasy and leisure.
For an 8 hour class the children should be able to play with this
particular are for at least an hour and there should be at 3-5 of the same
item so there is no competition between the children and they can have a
meaningful play experience. But if the program only runs for 6 hours
dramatic play needs to be ¾ of an hour or for a 4 hour program ½ hour
should be set aside for dramatic play.

They can use the same ideas when it comes to the furniture but
infants will need soft dolls and toys versus the hard dolls you make
get for toddlers and they need 3-5 each of those
Special needs children will probably just need assistant with putting
things on but can also use the same toys

clothes and kitchen utensils
and items that can be found
in a kitchen setting such as

To make sure there is something for
everybody no matter race or gender
there are a lot different ways to
represent different places around the
world such as clothing and food from
different places and also when
labeling the items in the center I
would put English and Spanish terms
or whatever is represented in my
classroom

Invent symbols to stand for real objects

Invent stories, sequence events,
Explore roles, (ex. “How does it feel to

- Talking with and singing to child using rhyme,
rhythm, and repetition frequently, especially during
feeding and diaper changes.
