8. The purpose and
conventions of a Front Cover
Essentially, the front cover functions to entice
readers to buy a magazine. Although the reader
will spend a fraction of the time they read the
magazine focusing on the front, they may not pick
it up in the first place unless the front cover is well
designed. The front cover is made up of a number
of important features. These are common
conventions of magazines. For you to create your
own magazine, you must understand how these
conventions function and what their purpose is.
9. The Masthead is the name of the magazine and is almost always displayed
at the top.
Why do you think that is?
The font style and colour will have been chosen extremely carefully to
help sell the magazine, as well as give some indication about the
content and audience
Similarly, the name of the magazine will be carefully chosen. Why is the
name important?
10. What can you say about the mastheads on
these magazines?
11. Only Block D, c & e have
done this

14. Magazines make most of their money from advertising, and as a
result they work hard to attract very specific audiences that
advertisers will want to sell products to. Look at the magazine
cover; take some notes on who you consider the target
audience to be. Take notes on the following and give some
evidence from the cover to support each point that you make:
Q Magazine front cover

a guess…
which magazine would these products, be
advertised in?

2. Men’s Health
3. Motoring

17. Pick 2 magazines from the list above and
think about how the TA profile, might affect
the front cover, by answering the following
questions.:
-What kind of pictures might be included
on the cover of an issue of the magazine?
-Would you expect either of these
magazines to be expensive, or cheap?
-What kind of articles might you expect in
either of these magazines,
and why?
18. Now look at the magazine covers. Were you
right in your guesses?
