INTRODUCTION
• Family health nursing has roots in society from
prehistoric times. Family health nursing is an art
and a science that has evolved over the last 20
years as way of thinking about and working with
families.
• Family nursing includes a philosophy and a way of
interacting with clients that affects how nurses
collect information, intervene with the patient,
advocate for patients and spiritual care approaches
with families.

• It is important that concepts and principles of
family health care has become a part of
Nurse’s value systems and knowledge based
generalized and specialized nursing practice.

DEFINITION
• “It is the process of providing health care needs of
families that are with in the scope of nursing
practice. Such nursing care can be aimed towards
the family as context, family as whole, family as
system and family as a component of society.”
• “Family nursing is an aspect of organized family
health care services which are directed or focused on
the family as the unit of care with health as the
goal.”

OBJECTIVES
• To identify health, nursing need and problems of
the family.
• To ensure family`s understanding and acceptance
of those needs and problems.
• To plan and provide health and nursing service
with the active participation of family members.
• To help families develop abilities to deal with
their health needs and health problems
independently.

Components
• THE FAMILY:
It is a group of persons united by ties of
marriage, blood, or adoption, constituting a single
household; which play an interacting and
communicating role to each other in their
respective social roles of husband and wife,
mother, father and creating and maintaining a
common culture. They depend to each other for
emotional, physical and economical support.

It is a dynamic changing state of well
being, which includes the biological,
psychological, spiritual, sociological and
cultural factors of individual members of
the family system.

• HEALTHY FAMILIES:
According to Gladding and stinnett and De
frain (in 1998 ) has given some characteristics of
the healthy families-
– Stable and consisting sharing of nurturing behavior.
– A set of goals towards which the family and each
individual work
– A high degree of religious and spiritual orientation
– Ability to deal with crisis in a positive manner.

ADVANTAGES
• It provides opportunities to contact and interact
with most of the family members and establish
report with family as a whole.
• It also makes possible to have active
participation of family members in planning
and implementing health care services.

• Family health nursing is family focused. It is
therefore essential to know the family from
various aspects which include family structure
and characteristics, socio economic, cultural
factors and environmental factors.
• Good working relationship with the family.
• Family health nursing is part of family health
care services and it is based on identified family
health and nursing needs.

– It directly focuses on the assessment and care of an
individual client in which the family in the context. It
is the traditional nursing focus in which the family
serves as context for individual as either a resource
or a stressor to their health and illness.
– Most existing nursing theories or models were
originally conceptualized using individual as a
Focus. These are completely family centered and
family focus approaches.

– It is directly focus on all individual family
members, the family as a client is the focus of
care. In this family members concentrate to
each individual and each is assessed and health
care is provided to all.

– It focuses on care of the family as a system.
• Family as a component of society:
– This approach is to care view the family as a
component of society, in which the family is
viewed as one of many institutions in society,
which similar to health, education, religious or
economic institutions. The family is the basic and
primary unit of the society and larger system of the
society.

• Family health nursing process is a systematic
approach to help family to develop and
strengthen its capabilities to meet its health
needs and solve health problems. It is deliberate
process which facilitate standardize nursing
actions to achieve family health nursing goals
and objectives. There are four distinct phase of
family nursing which are sequential.
