General comments:
3/5/2019 This thoughtful submission explains how the passage
of the 14th Amendment, Black Codes and
sharecropping system contributed to race relations during
Reconstruction and describes how urbanization
was a consequence of industrialization. The essay adequately
explains the Social Gospel Movement that
promoted Christianity to find solutions to social problems and
describes how Labor Reform helped define
the Progressive Era. The passage of the 19th Amendment
providing women the right to vote is discussed
and there is a satisfactory presentation explaining US
imperialism through the annexation of Hawaii and
Spanish American War. Fully developed discussions describing
a second consequence of industrialization
and describing a second reform Movement that helped define
the Progressive Era are not apparent.

SURVEY OF UNITED STATES HISTORY
Competency 1002.1.3: Reconstruction and the Age of American
Imperialism - The graduate examines the major changes that
defined the United States in the late-nineteenth and early-
twentieth centuries.
Introduction:
Over the course of the nineteenth century, the United States
matured into a country with interests and influences extending
beyond North America. Following the upheaval of the Civil
War, Americans tried to reassemble their country and bring the
states of the former Confederacy back into the Union. The
decade of Reconstruction was characterized by contentious
legislation and attempts to integrate African Americans into the
political, economic, and social frameworks of the United States.
The Second Industrial Revolution reached its height during the
second half of the century as well. New innovations in
manufacturing, transportation, and communication accelerated
the growth of consumer culture and changed the standard of
living in the United States. As the nineteenth century drew to a
close, the United States became an overseas empire, fighting
wars with European powers over territorial influence and
acquiring colonial possessions of its own.
In this assessment, you will examine the legal and social
changes that took place during Reconstruction in the United
States. You will also consider the ways that industrialization
and imperialism contributed to the emergence of the United
States as an international power during the late nineteenth
century.
Requirements:
A. Discuss three major changes in race relations (i.e., laws,
amendments, labor arrangements, working conditions, migration
patterns, socioeconomic changes) that resulted from
Reconstruction (suggested length of 1–2 pages).
B. Describe two consequences of industrialization on American
politics and/or society (suggested length of 1–2 pages).
C. Explain the rise of the Progressive movement (suggested
length of 1–2 pages) by doing the following:
1. Describe the role of religion and social morality in promoting
Progressive reforms.
2. Describe two reform movements that helped to define the
Progressive Era.
3. Discuss one impact of the Progressive movement on
American politics (i.e., amendments, legislation, diplomatic
decisions).
D. Explain (suggested length of 1–2 pages) the role of American
imperialism in leading the United States into two of the
following conflicts:
• Hawaiian Annexation
• War in the Philippines
• Spanish-American War
• World War I
E. Provide acknowledgement of source information, using in-
text citations and references, for quoted, paraphrased, or
summarized content.

Changes from the Reconstruction era
Numerous changes, especially with relation to race, took place
during the Reconstruction era in the form of new laws as well as
amendment of existing laws to accommodate people of color.
However, even with new laws and amendments, the freedmen
were still subjected to discrimination especially from civilian
paramilitary groups such as the “Red Shirts” who often used
violence against the freedmen (Holloway, 2018). A notable law
amendment was the 14th Amendment that defined citizenship as
well as the rights of citizens. Subsequently, freedmen were
largely recognized as citizens with equal rights as others.
New laws such as the “Louisiana black code” were drafted
noting that the growing population of freedmen was proving
uncontrollable (Holloway, 2018). The law concerned slaves and
legislators put in place “freedmen” instead of “slaves”.
However, even though the laws were edited, the spirit of racial
segregation was still profound.
A notable social economic change was the "sharecropping
system" where landowners and former slaves made
arrangements for farming. This was also considered as a form of
slavery since the freedmen would get into so much debt.
Consequences of Industrialization
Two notable consequences of industrialization were
urbanization and social stratification. Towns developed around
industries due to a population influx. Furthermore, social
stratification grew from the differences in incomes where
political and social classes grew. Additionally, the growth of
urbanizations and social stratification yielded a bigger problem
of ethnic and social tensions.
The Rise of the Progressive Movement
The progressive movement was a school of thought that
believed the government’s actions changes as the society
evolved (History, 2018). Religion and social morality played a
significant role in the progressive movement shaping the
thoughts of reproductive rights, the role of women in the
society, the death penalty, and homosexuality.
Reform Movements Defining the Progressive Era
Many reforms movements defined the progressive era. Labor
reforms played a notable role during the era helping advocate
for issues such as working conditions, working hours, and fair
pay (Greenberg, 2017). Additionally, according to History
(2018), the Social Gospel can be viewed as a critical attribute of
the Progressive era helping to incorporate Christian values in
finding solutions to social problems such as alcoholism, drugs
use, poverty, and crime.
Impact of the Progressive Movement in American Politics
One of the major impacts that the progressive movement had on
the nature of American politics is the 19th amendment that
allowed women to vote. The amendment prohibited the federal
as well as state governments from barring citizens the right to
vote on the basis of gender. The amendment worked to overrule
“Minor v. Happersett” making women more active in politics
not only in voting but also later vying for elective posts.
Role of American Imperialism
Hawaiian Annexation
Imperialism can be viewed as the use of power to increase a
nation’s control over other territories. America used
imperialism largely, especially during the Hawaiian annexation.
With Reconstruction, America sought to expand most notably to
the islands in the Pacific. President McKinley signed a treaty to
annex Hawaii Island but failed in the Senate (Hitt,
2018). However, by imposing trade tariffs on the products the
island exported to the mainland, the United States made strides
towards annexation which finally materialized with the arrest
and trial of the Hawaiian Queen who would later lobby against
the annexation. However, annexation was finally achieved with
the Newlands Resolution.
The Spanish-American War
Cuba and many of the Pacific territories were Spanish colonies.
However, Cuba wanted independence and the US government
under President McKinley sought to help out Cuba (Coston,
2018). With approval from the Congress, the president engaged
Spain in war after a US ship exploded with the McKinley
administration blaming Spain. The war that took place in 1898
would be ended by the Paris Treaty where Spain would
surrender all her Pacific colonies to the United States.

Introduction
The United States is a country that has come along way to
current America we see today, going through civil wars, social
rearrangements, and economic turbulence that saw the
reconstruction of the country into a union. This involves
contingency legislation that saw the integration of the African
Americans, revolutionizing the manufacturing, transport and
communication sectors improving the status of the united states
and the gaining of interest and influence to and beyond North
America over the nineteenth century. Through the success and
attaining of economic and political stability, the US begun to
focus on conquering external emperors while fighting with the
European powers over territorial influence and colonial
possession become evident. This article outlines the legal and
social reconstruction that took place in the US, how
industrialization and imperialism made the US become an
international power and gain influence in the late nineteenth
century (Coston, 2018).
Social and legal reforms for revolution
Reconstruction of the united states occurred majorly after the
end of the civil war in many parts of the country. Many of the
reforms that were instituted, especially by Congress, were
aimed at addressing the factors that led to the emergence of the
civil war in America. The most important reforms that were
instituted during this period, especially in the southern economy
was the issue of turning it from being slavery dependent
economy to a state where slaves would be free and have rights.
These changes gained a major boosted through amendments to
the constitution to recognize and strengthen these rights. The
civil war dealt a major blow to the agricultural sector, in which
plantations were damaged, and the sharecropping of the
landowners and slaves leading to impoverization of the slaves
and reduced output of the slave masters. The reforms sought to
integrate the people of South America with those of the north in
order to protect the status of the freedmen and make them be
recognized by their masters. However, the southerners saw the
northerners as taking advantage of the situation and ended up
cutting the ties that had been established by Black Codes and
reverted to use of slaves for labor(Dunleavy, 2014).
The second phase of the legal reform happened when radical
Republicans pushed for the punishment of the south, although
politicians such as Abraham Lincoln suggested leniency in
dealing with them. They pushed for 14th antislavery
amendments which saw the Republican take control over
Congress with this tension coming to an end when the Congress
regained prominence as a result of the infighting among
Republicans in 1874, which signaled the end of reconstruction.
Industrialization and imperialism
American Imperialism refers to the economic, military and
cultural influence of the US over other countries, which was
boosted greatly by industrialization. Industrialization lead to
businessmen to seek new market internationally to sell their
goods. The growing influence of the Darwinism lead to the
belief that America was the propelling of the concept of the
industry, democracy, and Christianity which would savage less
developed societies, fueled the US towards imperialism. The
imperialism was majorly based on the belief that America was
entirely different from other countries due to its commitment to
liberty and democracy. It began with the drawing of the
constitution, the subjection of people to alien rule, all the way
to the second world war which made American control countries
in the middle east and Germany (Dunleavy, 2014). America, in
1898 gained military control of Hawaiian ports, buildings that
had military equipment and eventually it was conquered and
become an American state in 1959. In addition, American
progressively intervened in the wars in various nations, making
it pick rivalry with the European nations, especially Spain,
which strengthened the conquering psyche (Morefield, 2014).
In conclusion, the revolutionism in brought peace and political
stability in America, which then, through the various waves of
industrialization and imperialism lead to the US becoming a
world superpower in the late 19th century.

REVISION INSTRUCTIONS;
As we discussed, you need to work on two areas in Task 3:
Part B – here they are asking for a second consequence of
industrialization. Try to focus on things that are directly related
to industrialization. How did it change the way people worked,
where they worked, how they lived, what they spent their money
on, how they travelled etc.
Part C2 – here the issue is you are discussing factors from the
Reconstruction period when you need to be discussing
movements from the later Progressive Era. So read in Chapter
18 and work on getting movements from the right period.

Introduction: Over the course of the nineteenth century, the United States matured into a country with interests and influences extending beyond North America. Following the upheaval of the Civil War, Americans tried to reassemble their country and bring the states of the former Confederacy back into the Union. The decade of Reconstruction was characterized by contentious legislation and attempts to integrate African Americans into the political, economic, and social frameworks of the United States.
  • 21. The Second Industrial Revolution reached its height during the second half of the century as well. New innovations in manufacturing, transportation, and communication accelerated the growth of consumer culture and changed the standard of living in the United States. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the United States became an overseas empire, fighting wars with European powers over territorial influence and acquiring colonial possessions of its own. In this assessment, you will examine the legal and social changes that took place during Reconstruction in the United States. You will also consider the ways that industrialization and imperialism contributed to the emergence of the United States as an international power during the late nineteenth century. Requirements: A. Discuss three major changes in race relations (i.e., laws, amendments, labor arrangements, working conditions, migration patterns, socioeconomic changes) that resulted from Reconstruction (suggested length of 1–2 pages). B. Describe two consequences of industrialization on American politics and/or society (suggested length of 1–2 pages). C. Explain the rise of the Progressive movement (suggested length of 1–2 pages) by doing the following: 1. Describe the role of religion and social morality in promoting Progressive reforms. 2. Describe two reform movements that helped to define the Progressive Era. 3. Discuss one impact of the Progressive movement on American politics (i.e., amendments, legislation, diplomatic decisions). D. Explain (suggested length of 1–2 pages) the role of American

  • 23. Survey of United States History Changes from the Reconstruction era Numerous changes, especially with relation to race, took place during the Reconstruction era in the form of new laws as well as amendment of existing laws to accommodate people of color. However, even with new laws and amendments, the freedmen were still subjected to discrimination especially from civilian paramilitary groups such as the “Red Shirts” who often used violence against the freedmen (Holloway, 2018). A notable law amendment was the 14th Amendment that defined citizenship as well as the rights of citizens. Subsequently, freedmen were largely recognized as citizens with equal rights as others. New laws such as the “Louisiana black code” were drafted noting that the growing population of freedmen was proving uncontrollable (Holloway, 2018). The law concerned slaves and legislators put in place “freedmen” instead of “slaves”. However, even though the laws were edited, the spirit of racial segregation was still profound. A notable social economic change was the "sharecropping system" where landowners and former slaves made arrangements for farming. This was also considered as a form of slavery since the freedmen would get into so much debt. Consequences of Industrialization Two notable consequences of industrialization were urbanization and social stratification. Towns developed around industries due to a population influx. Furthermore, social stratification grew from the differences in incomes where political and social classes grew. Additionally, the growth of urbanizations and social stratification yielded a bigger problem of ethnic and social tensions. The Rise of the Progressive Movement The progressive movement was a school of thought that believed the government’s actions changes as the society
  • 24. evolved (History, 2018). Religion and social morality played a significant role in the progressive movement shaping the thoughts of reproductive rights, the role of women in the society, the death penalty, and homosexuality. Reform Movements Defining the Progressive Era Many reforms movements defined the progressive era. Labor reforms played a notable role during the era helping advocate for issues such as working conditions, working hours, and fair pay (Greenberg, 2017). Additionally, according to History (2018), the Social Gospel can be viewed as a critical attribute of the Progressive era helping to incorporate Christian values in finding solutions to social problems such as alcoholism, drugs use, poverty, and crime. Impact of the Progressive Movement in American Politics One of the major impacts that the progressive movement had on the nature of American politics is the 19th amendment that allowed women to vote. The amendment prohibited the federal as well as state governments from barring citizens the right to vote on the basis of gender. The amendment worked to overrule “Minor v. Happersett” making women more active in politics not only in voting but also later vying for elective posts. Role of American Imperialism Hawaiian Annexation Imperialism can be viewed as the use of power to increase a nation’s control over other territories. America used imperialism largely, especially during the Hawaiian annexation. With Reconstruction, America sought to expand most notably to the islands in the Pacific. President McKinley signed a treaty to annex Hawaii Island but failed in the Senate (Hitt, 2018). However, by imposing trade tariffs on the products the island exported to the mainland, the United States made strides towards annexation which finally materialized with the arrest and trial of the Hawaiian Queen who would later lobby against the annexation. However, annexation was finally achieved with the Newlands Resolution. The Spanish-American War
  • 25. Cuba and many of the Pacific territories were Spanish colonies. However, Cuba wanted independence and the US government under President McKinley sought to help out Cuba (Coston, 2018). With approval from the Congress, the president engaged Spain in war after a US ship exploded with the McKinley administration blaming Spain. The war that took place in 1898 would be ended by the Paris Treaty where Spain would surrender all her Pacific colonies to the United States. References Coston, W. H. (2018). This involves contingency legislation that saw the integration of the African Americans, revolutionizing the manufacturing, transport and communication sectors improving the status of the united states and the gaining of interest and influence to and beyond North America over the nineteenth century. Through the success and attaining of economic and political stability, the US begun to focus on conquering external emperors while fighting with the European powers over territorial influence and colonial possession become evident. This article outlines the legal and social reconstruction that took place in the US, how
  • 27. industrialization and imperialism made the US become an international power and gain influence in the late nineteenth century (Coston, 2018). Social and legal reforms for revolution Reconstruction of the united states occurred majorly after the end of the civil war in many parts of the country. Many of the reforms that were instituted, especially by Congress, were aimed at addressing the factors that led to the emergence of the civil war in America. The most important reforms that were instituted during this period, especially in the southern economy was the issue of turning it from being slavery dependent economy to a state where slaves would be free and have rights. These changes gained a major boosted through amendments to the constitution to recognize and strengthen these rights. The civil war dealt a major blow to the agricultural sector, in which plantations were damaged, and the sharecropping of the landowners and slaves leading to impoverization of the slaves and reduced output of the slave masters. The reforms sought to integrate the people of South America with those of the north in order to protect the status of the freedmen and make them be recognized by their masters. However, the southerners saw the northerners as taking advantage of the situation and ended up cutting the ties that had been established by Black Codes and reverted to use of slaves for labor(Dunleavy, 2014). The second phase of the legal reform happened when radical Republicans pushed for the punishment of the south, although politicians such as Abraham Lincoln suggested leniency in dealing with them. They pushed for 14th antislavery amendments which saw the Republican take control over Congress with this tension coming to an end when the Congress regained prominence as a result of the infighting among Republicans in 1874, which signaled the end of reconstruction. Industrialization and imperialism American Imperialism refers to the economic, military and cultural influence of the US over other countries, which was boosted greatly by industrialization. Industrialization lead to
  • 28. businessmen to seek new market internationally to sell their goods. The growing influence of the Darwinism lead to the belief that America was the propelling of the concept of the industry, democracy, and Christianity which would savage less developed societies, fueled the US towards imperialism. The imperialism was majorly based on the belief that America was entirely different from other countries due to its commitment to liberty and democracy. It began with the drawing of the constitution, the subjection of people to alien rule, all the way to the second world war which made American control countries in the middle east and Germany (Dunleavy, 2014). America, in 1898 gained military control of Hawaiian ports, buildings that had military equipment and eventually it was conquered and become an American state in 1959. In addition, American progressively intervened in the wars in various nations, making it pick rivalry with the European nations, especially Spain, which strengthened the conquering psyche (Morefield, 2014). In conclusion, the revolutionism in brought peace and political stability in America, which then, through the various waves of industrialization and imperialism lead to the US becoming a world superpower in the late 19th century. • 29. REVISION INSTRUCTIONS; As we discussed, you need to work on two areas in Task 3: Part B – here they are asking for a second consequence of industrialization. Try to focus on things that are directly related to industrialization. How did it change the way people worked, where they worked, how they lived, what they spent their money on, how they travelled etc. Part C2 – here the issue is you are discussing factors from the Reconstruction period when you need to be discussing movements from the later Progressive Era. So read in Chapter 18 and work on getting movements from the right period.
