· List three (3) major aspects of industrialization between 1865
and 1920. In your response, consider society, the economy, and
politics.
The three major factors of industrialization during 1865 and
1920 that influenced U.S. society, economy, and politics were;
urbanization, working conditions, and a laissez- faire
government.
· List five (5) specific groups that were affected by
industrialization. Provide two (2) examples for each group
describing how the group was affected. (Consider issues such as
race, ethnicity, gender, child labor, etc.)
There were many groups affected by industrialization. These
included the working people. women and children, farmers,
entrepreneurs and politicians.
3. Working people were subject to low wages, long hours, and
unsafe, unsanitary and dangerous working conditions.
The two groups; female and child labor also experienced the
same working conditions of grown men, however there are a few
differences. Women were paid far less than men in the
workforce, and children didn’t receive an education.
Farmers did relatively well during the industrial revolution.
New technology modernized the farms. Good roads allowed for
movement of goods. New inventions like the McCormick
Reaper, thresher, and steel tipped plow allowed farmers to grow
more crops with less labor in a shorter period of time. (Pardey,
Beintema, & Dehmer, 2006)
Another group that was affected is the entrepreneurs’ group.
Industrialization changed the way entrepreneurs had done
business and made them key players in global markets.
Entrepreneurs followed two types of integration during the
industrialization; horizontal and vertical. Refrigerated railroad
cars allowed for widespread transportation of their goods.
Politicians too were negatively affected by industrialization.
The industrialization tempted politicians as much as it did
businessmen. As the economy and industries started growing
some politicians could become eagerly greedy to be corrupt.
Credit Mobilier Scandal itself is a perfect example. Another
example could be Tammany Hall case. (Hull House, 2014).
· List five (5) ways that industrialization affected the life of the
average working American during this period.
With the rise of large corporations came the need for more
skilled and educated white- collar workers. Wages for the
middle class had better salaries hence raised their standard of
living significantly. (Hull House, 2014). Life was experienced
differently between the rich and the poor. The life of the
average working American during industrialization was hard.
Many Americans lived in overcrowded cities, in dismal
neighborhoods. Entire families; fathers, mothers, and children
worked in long hard hours in factories, or mines under horrible
working conditions, for little pay. They had poor health, with a
4. life expectancy of about 47. (Oeppen & Vaupel, 2002)
