Challenges for civil engineers
1.
2. Civil Engineering
A mirror of the history of human beings on the
earth.
An aspect of life since the beginnings of human
existence.
Create the progressive well-being of humanity.
Provide facilities for community living, industry
and transportation, and structures for the use of
humanity.
A profession that makes the world a more
pleasing place to live.

3. History of Civil Engineering
The earliest practices may have commenced
between 4000 and 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt and
Mesopotamia.
Humans started to abandon a nomadic existence
and caused a need for the construction of shelter.
Pyramids in Egypt (2700-2500 BC) might be
considered the first instances of large structure
constructions.
Transportation became increasingly important
leading to the development of the wheel and
sailing.

4. History of Civil Engineering…Contd.
Later the Romans developed civil structures
throughout their empire, including aqueducts,
harbours, bridges, dams and roads.
Most architectural design and construction was
carried out by artisans, such as stonemasons and
carpenters.
Structures, roads, and infrastructure that existed
were repetitive , and increases in scale were
incremental.

5. Ancient Historic Civil Engineering
Constructions
The Pyramids of Giza, Cairo, Egypt
The Tower of London, England
The Great Wall of China
Toulon Cathedral, France
Angkor Wat Temple, Cambodia
Taj Mahal, India
Grand Palace, Thailand
And, many more…
Civil structures are symbols of Might

6. What are Civil Engineers?
Central figures in community development
Provide buildings and roads that are the basis of city
infrastructure
Use their skills to optimize performance and efficiency of
community systems
Develop water and sewer systems that balance safety
standards with delivery of water and sewer processing
Handle the key functions in city operation and residents’
health and comfort
The first engineers and continue to be dedicated to
technology development for the common good and the
general public.

7. Benefits of Civil Engineering
in all Aspects of Life
A critical role in increasing the health and quality of
life in the last 50 years
Better water supplies, municipal sewer systems,
wastewater treatment plants
Better building designs to protect people from natural
hazards and provide health care
Improved agriculture through water resource
development and distribution systems
More efficient transportation systems on which
modern society depends, and so on.

21. Living a Meaningful Life
Civil engineers improve the qualities of life through
the production of infrastructure such as:
Buildings, bridges and other structures
Highways
Dams and levees
Water treatment plants and waste disposal system.
These are Challenges for the Civil engineers
Civil engineers make sure human habitat is liveable
They use resources wisely, leading to a sustainable
development
They help maintain competitiveness in the global economy.

22. Civil engineers do great things!!
What we do is very important to everyday society.
