English plays an important role in India for several reasons. It is the language of education, information/technology, communication, science/technology, advertising/marketing, and is part of everyday life in India. While English is not an official language, it is used widely for communication across states with different languages. This is because learning English allows Indians to understand other cultures and communicate across a multicultural and multilingual country. However, the dominance of English also means it is seen as a language of power and status that benefits elite, non-Hindi groups, while potentially decreasing the standard of English education.
