Dr. Vera Cordeiro founded Brazil Child Health (Associação Saúde Criança) in 1993 after observing children at the hospital she worked at being readmitted with worsening conditions due to their families' poverty. Her non-profit organization provides health, housing, education and self-sufficiency assistance to help break the cycle of child hospitalization and rehospitalization. It has helped over 40,000 people and families, increasing their average income by 32% while reducing hospital days and life-threatening conditions.
