4. • The word is a sound expressive of the idea.
• The Word has power—even the ordinary written word has
a power.
• If it is an inspired word it has still more power.
-Sri Aurobindo
o When someone calls you names or heaps insult you find it excruciating to bear. You
become inflamed and uneasy.
o When someone praises you, you feel happy.
o The spectrum of human reactions to the words and things around us is endless.
o When anyone shouts, "Scorpion! Scorpion!", "Snake! Snake!", you reflexively jump
in fright.
o If such situations can arouse feelings of fear, anger, joy, then …..

7. • Chanting (japa) means repetition of some letter,
word, mantra or sentence.
• Nama japa means repetition of Divine’s Name
and
• mantra japa means repetition of a mantra.

9. • Santh Tulsidas has said,
नामु सप्रेम जपत अनयासा ।
भगत होहहिं मुद मिंगल बासा ।।
सुहमरि पवनसूत पावन नामू ।
अपने बस करि िाखे िामू ।।
10. • There is no
difference between
Naama & Nami.
• (Satyabhama tried to
balance Krishna with
gold and precious stones,
but could not do it. Then
Rukmini put a tulsi
leaf with the name of
Krishna on the scales.
That balanced the Lord.)
11. • Skand Puranas :
"I pray to the infinitely powerful Lordwhose holy name andremembrance
relieves me of all mental and physical afflictions."
• Padma Purana :
Hari nama kirtan is the nectar behindwhich even the devas try to drink.
The Almighty permanently resides in the place where Hari Nama Kirtan is
performed. Hari Nama Kirtan alone is enough to attract the God himself (in
most other cases we can only attract His grace).
• Dr. Benson, Harvard University:
metabolism in a human changes .
12. • Dr. Benson, Harvard University:
metabolismin a human changes .
o In an issue of Span magazine, 1976, he says that experiments show
that the metabolism in a human changes when he retires for the
night. Blood pressure and other body processes operate without
any fluctuations. The individual awakens fresh and invigorated.
o This particular situation is attained through 20 minutes of 'japa',
twice during the day.
o Chanting the Lord's name corrects all erratic body processes and
thus enabling good health.
13. (The Name is God, the Guru, the all in all. Indeed, the power of God‘s Name is
simply marvellous. It can take man to the summit of spiritual experience. It grants
one eternal freedom, bliss and peace. The Name has the power to tear up the veil
of Maya or ignorance and bring you face to face with God or Truth. The Name is
not different from Him. The Divine Name is greater than any philosophy in the
world. It is the key by which you can unlock the gates to the kingdom of immortal
peace and bliss.
– Samartha Rama Das
• “Absorb yourself in chanting God's name. This will forge armour that will make
you invincible to all miseries.” –Shastri Sadhu Shri Hari Das

18. (Once Namadev was travelling to Gujarat where he was close to the temple town
of Nageshwar. This town houses the famous Shiva temple which is one of the 12
Jotirlinga Kshetras. It was the auspicious day of Shivaratri and a huge number of people
thronged to the temple to have darshan of Lord Shiva. Surrounded by a host of devotees,
Sant Namadev stood at the entrance of the temple and lost himself in Nama Sankirtan
(singing the Divine Names of the Lord). As the crowd swelled, the temple authorities tried
to drive away Namadev and his devotees and objected to their Kirtan. At once, Namadev
abided by the words of the temple priests and stepped away from the entrance. However,
how could they stop their Nama Sankirtan? They moved towards the back side of the
temple and continued with the Kirtan.
• At that very moment, Lord Shiva turned Himself around in order to listen to
Namadev’s Nama Sankirtan! Even today, Shiva’s vehicle - Nandi - in that temple is
located on the back side of the temple!)
21. C. When chanting is in progress, the conscious mind does NOT
accept impulses coming from the centers like the desire &
instinct centre, like & dislike centre, temperamental
characteristic centre, etc. of the subconscious mind. If this
continues for quite sometime then impressions in these centers
start decreasing.
D. The power of concentration increases.
E. One can acquire control over a particular element like the tej
(absolute fire) element …and can acquire a supernatural power
accordingly.
22. F. If one chants the Lord’s Name while performing an action
(karma), then that action becomes a non-action, i.e. no accumulated
account (sanchit) is generated from it.
- Saint Bhaktaraj Maharaj
G. Nama Japa purifies the mind of the seeker, which is the
fundamental requirement for Spiritual Progress.
(through the chanting of the name, one's attachment to God
grows day by day, and joy fills the soul, one has nothing to fear. ...
The grace of God will certainly descend.
- Paramahansa Ramakrishna in GSR, 204.
31. If the sadhak does not repeat The Mother’s name as mentioned
above, but does work for The Mother in the beginning stages of his
sadhana, his work becomes Divine work because he has already
accepted the aim to realize the Divine in a transformed mind, life and
body.
But this is not very fruitful since the sadhak does not remain
conscious and does not surrender consciously. It may take him many
years to remain conscious while working and to surrender
consciously.
Ma—this Nama-Japa, brings forth consciousness quickly and
makes surrender easy.
-Sri Aurobindo
36. • The aim of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga: transformation of the sadhak’s mind, life
and body into Divine Truth and Principles and to realize the Divine in the
transformed mind, vital and body.
With a little effort though, if the sadhak repeats The Mother’s name, Ma,
he can do the Divine work and offer it at Her feet right from the beginning
of sadhana.
The Mother has said that in all actions, one has to “Remember and Offer”.
Unless you remember, you cannot offer. By doing Nama-Japa of Ma, one
can remember Her.
41. As soon as the Supramental Force touches the sadhak or he
advances a little on the path of yoga, peace, light, ananda,
knowledge descend from above in a little measure into the
sadhak’s mind, life and body (nature and movements like lust,
anger, etc. will be transformed);
A divine Name or a Mantra (like the So’ham) can enter the
adhara and move in the breathing as in your experience.
–Sri Aurobindo
47. • Knowingly or unknowingly has its effect.
• Whilst doing 'japa' visualise the Divine Mother and Sri
Aurobindo & on Thy significance.
• Fix the hours for Nama japa.
(Hanumanji- Pupil doing japa while defecation - Slap- Sri Rama)
• Select a definite place.
• Be seated in a steady pose because this helps to steady
the mind and aids concentration.
49. Sri Aurobindo: The japa is usually successful only on one
of two conditions
• if it is repeated with a sense of its significance, a dwelling of
something in the mind on the nature, power, beauty,
attraction of the Godhead it signifies and is to bring into the
consciousness,-that is the mental way;
1
• or if it comes up from the heart or rings in it with a certain
sense or feeling of bhakti making it alive,-that is the
emotional way.

F. Vibhishan solved their dilemma.
He took a leaf and without their knowledge wrote the name of 'Ram' and wrapped it in a cloth. "Take this cloth," Vibhishan said "and a way shall be opened to you." The followers did as their new king had instructed. They entered the waters and to their surprise the ocean waters became knee-deep. They waded towards Lanka. Midway one of them opened the cloth to see its contents. Seeing only a dry leaf, he laughed. On closer inspection he saw the name of 'Ram' written on it. This made him laugh all the more. "How could the name of Ram make the ocean knee-deep!" And with this thought his faith subsided. The ocean waters rose and they all perished in the deluge.

A non-action (akarma karma): If one chants the Lord’s Name while performing an action (karma), then that action becomes a non-action, i.e. no accumulated account (sanchit) is generated from it. Since no new accounts are created, after experiencing all that is destined, one can quickly get liberated from the cycle of births and deaths.
**Let us say, the accumulated account of an individual is 100 units at the time of birth. On an average in one birth, undergoing destiny depletes 6 units. This means one should be able to attain Liberation within l6 to l7 births. But this does NOT HAPPEN because, whilst one is undergoing 6 units of destiny, new accounts are simultaneously being created by one’s willful actions (kriyaman karma). New accounts rise by 10 units. Hence, at the time of death, the accumulated account has become 104 units instead of 94. Consequently, an individual gets more and more entrapped in the cycle of births and deaths. To prevent such a thing from happening, the action performed should be converted to a non-action (akarma karma)!! This can happen only by chanting The Lord’s Name.

- Some people say that mechanical Nama-Japa has no
effect. If this is true, why do the spiritual seekers fear
mechanical thoughts so much?
- Form a strong habit of repeating the Name of the Lord. Then only it will be easy for you to remember Him at the moment of death also.If you do Japa of a Mantra 13 crores of times, you will have Darshan of your Ishta in physical form. If you are sincere and earnest, you can do this within 4 years. -- Swami Sivananda
- It is not the number of Japa that should be taken into consideration. There must be purity, concentration and Bhava (feeling) while doing Japa. This is more important. -- Swami Sivananda
