2. Punk Magazine
Punk was a music magazine
and fanzine created by
cartoonist John Holmstrom,
publisher Ged Dunn, and
"resident punk" Legs McNeil in
1975. Its first issue was in
1976 and its last issue was
released in 1979. All of the
covers contain cartoons of the
interviewed artists. All the
covers centre around the
image of the artists and
include a fairly similar colour
palette
of darker colours such as
black or grey and brighter
colours such as yellow red
or blue on the artist and
title to draw your
attention to them. The
title of the magazine is
very
Prominent on all the
covers to make it
apparent to the readers
what they are reading.
The title seems to be
bigger than the artists
names on the covers
which suggests that they
anticipate people will be
more interested in the
fact that it is their
magazine than who is
being interviewed that
issue.
3. Vive Le Rock is an
independent music
magazine published
in the United
Kingdom which
covers punk, new
wave, glam, and
garage through to
mod and primal
rock 'n' roll, and the
darker side of
alternative rock. All
of the covers
feature the artists
as the main focal
point.
Vive Le Rock
The title of the magazine
is easily recognisable as it
uses a unique font and is
usually in a prominent
colour such as white red
or blue which makes it
stand our from the darker
colour palette of the
background
Which tends to be
consistent across all the
covers.
4. HeatwaveHeatwave
magazine is an
independent
British magazine
that was founded
in 2017. It includes
mostly small local
bands. Only 7
issues of the
magazine were
released overall.
The magazine has an easily
recognisable title as it uses
a unique font. It is either
white or red too which also
draws attention to the title
and makes it easy to
recognise for viewers.
5. The logo uses stylised font which helps to create a unique brand and draw in regular readers. The black colour
represents strength which could draw people to the magazine due to the strength that is represented. The word
“punk” is in white which makes it stand out from the black background of the logo; white can also represent
simplicity. A simpler logo may be more likely to appeal to their target audience than a more complex one. The slogan
“the best of punk magazine” is depicted in yellow which stands out against the other darker colours of the logo.
There is a red border around the outside of the logo which gives an overall affect of excitement to the logo.
The logo of “vive le rock” also uses stylised font which helps to draw in and keep regular readers as
it is easily recognisable. The colours used such as red represent passion and excitement; it is also a
bright colour which draws your attention to the logo and reinforces that it is easily recognisable.
The design of the logo makes it look slightly three dimensional which makes it stand out even
more. The darker colours used contrast the white background of the logo. The name of the
magazine “vive le rock” means long live rock; the use of French in the title also draws in readers as
it gives the magazine an appeal.
Heatwave magazine uses black and white in the logo which greatly contrast each other and draw attention to the title. The title is
displayed all in capital letters which represents the significance of it.
The 3 logos all use similar colours for the mastheads and they all use a stylised font which makes their logo unique these features help to attract a regular audience to the magazines.
6. Sell lines, headlines and feature lines.
Features the names of other
artists that are included to
encourage more people to buy
the magazine.
Includes the price
so people know
how much it is so
therefore will be
more likely to buy
it.
Includes a stylised
cartoon of the main
featured artist. This
makes the magazine
easily recognisable.
Stylised font of the name
of the main featured artist
in the magazine.
7. Stylised font to make the title of the magazine
easily recognisable. This also helps to draw in
and keep reader to the magazine. The title is
also partly hidden which shows the magazine
already has an established brand so therefore
doesn’t need to rely on getting new readers.
Includes a large photo of the
main featured artist to draw in
fans of the artist.
Features the stylised font of
each band/artist to help
establish a unique brand and
draw in readers.
Features a list of other
featured artists. The
smaller font indicates
that they are not as
important as the other
titular artists of the
magazine.
8. Stylised title. The title isn’t
covered which suggests
that it is a newly
established brand so they
want to be easily
recognisable to draw in
viewers.
Features 2 different bands but
photographed in the same style.
Uses contrasting colours to
make the band stand out from
the background and make them
easily recognisable.
Features the issue number of the
magazine. Suggests it is a newer magazine
as the issue numbers are 1&3.
9. This is issue one of my magazine featuring slowthai and anime. They are
fairly new artists so this would fit in with the age range of 17-25 as they are
more well known by young people. I chose a stylised font which I kept
consistent across both issues of the magazine. The tagline “the voice of
modern britpunk” lets readers know what to expect and shows that its
about a less well-known subgenre of punk as opposed to mainstream punk.
The interview from relatively well known artists would make fans of these
artists more likely to buy the magazine as well as punk fans. The direct
mode of address would also encourage readers to buy the magazine as it
appears as if the artists are looking specifically at you.
I used a contrasting colour shceme for the text and background; using the
same colours to contrast the white background.
10. This is the second issue of my magazine. The colours it features would
suggest that it would be aimed more at a female demographic . I chose
these colours to match the colour of the artists hair and chose the same
colour for the text to contrast the background. The photo I used is from a
photoshoot I found online; the idea of an “up and coming artist” could draw
in readers. It would also help smaller artists to establish a larger fanbase.
11. Both newspapers use the same stylised font
and design to make them stand out easily and
be easily recognisable to viewers.
They both feature direct address with the artist
in the centre of the shot to draw attention to
them and make it clear they are the focus of the
cover.
12. They are similar to the other magazines I researched as they also use
stylised font and have the artist as the main focus of the magazine. I
tried to use elements of all the magazines I researched in my
magazine.
Heatwave is an example of this. It features a fairly simplistic
background.
Punk magazine features the title of the magazine in large stylised
font and has all the main points on the cover in the same font and
colour such as the artists name and the title
Vive le rock features the artist as the main focus of the cover; also
with a simplistic background so the focus is on the artist.
