1. S E P UL T R A – R E F US E / R E S I S T
DETAILED ANALYSIS 2
2. MUSIC VIDEOS DEMONSTRATE GENRE
CHARACTERISTICS
This music video demonstrates the genre characteristics through
multiple ways. Firstly, the video shows people people on the street
throwing Molotov cocktails and this relates to the rebelliousness that
is commonly found in the metal genre as the people in the video are
fighting against police and authority figures. The lyrics also then
demonstrate these characteristics from things such as “Chaos A.D” in
which the word “Chaos” directly relates to the chaotic and
energetic nature of metal music videos.
3. VISUAL/LYRICS RELATIONSHIP
The visuals and lyrics directly relate, one example of this happening is
when it says “Tanks on the streets” and during this time a picture of a
person climbing on a tank that is in the middle of a road is shown.
Sepultra use real life footage of events to link their lyrics to real life to
prove that these events are happening. Along with being heard in the
song, this also means that the audience can see what they mean.
4. MUSIC/VISUAL RELATIONSHIP
The lead singer sings in a loud rough voice which again relates to the metal genre
and the anger that the music video is trying to represent. Along this this the
relationship between the music and the visuals is that the visuals show quick paced
editing, switching between many different shots to match the pace of the music
and the energy that is involved. At the start of the video when the music is also just
starting there are a couple of real life footage shots used which are long and
drawn out as the music is slow at the start, as the shot of one of the guitarist is
shown hitting his guitar the pace of the music and edit also increases which is the
indication that the music pace of the music was going to change. Another
example of the change of pace is at 1:43 in which the music gets quieter and
slower and a single clip is prolonged to be longer than the majority of the others in
the music video, then as the pace gets quicker again at 1:46 the shots again
quickly switch between each other.
5. NOTATION OF LOOKS
There is no sexualisation of women within the music video that I
can analyze but this music video will still attract male viewers due
to the violent nature of it and the nature of the footage of riots
and unrest within the music video which is very appealing
towards male viewers especially of the metal genre who are
stereotypically rebellious and violent. The image bellows shows
the audience which has a majority of males and the audience
seem to be very energetic which also then links to this idea.
6. RECORD LABEL DEMANDS
The speed of the editing and the quick movements and head
banging of the band members has a lot of energy that is
required in the metal genre to meet the target audience’s needs
and so sell their songs and to advertise the work of the band. The
fashion of the band members, such as the long hair, tattoos and
sleeveless leather jackets, also match that of other metal bands
and so this visually announces that Sepultura are a metal band
and so this appeals fans of the metal genre more.
7. INTERTEXTUAL RELATIONSHIP
This music video has a very strong intertextual relationship throughout
the entire video, this is from it’s constant switching to different types of
footage based on real life events that have occurred which relates to
the media and political side of real life as these events most likely will
have been featured in newspapers or on news channels. The music
video is mainly about rebellion against the law as the song title suggests
(Refuse/Resist) and so this has a strong relationship with the media as
these events are actually happening and are being broadcast
internationally.
8. PERFORMANCE BASED/CONCEPT
BASED/NARRATIVE BASED
This music video is mostly performance based as it includes live
performances that show the band and also includes real life footage of
riots. The performance of the band includes heavy hitting of the drums,
fast movement across the stage and head banging adds to the feel of
the music as it adds more energy which the audience of the metal
genre tend to enjoy more, an example of this is in the image below in
which a member of the band is head banging to add this energy.
