2. Shot types and camera movement:
The MCU shows the background of the setting, which is
in a vandalised, ‘rough’ building. This fits into the
rock/metal genre as the vandalism suggests anarchy
and rebellion which is strongly linked with this genre of
music. They has also added their logo in the word
‘home’. This is showing brand identity to their fans in
that they are noticed and thought of perhaps.
The lighting is quite subtle yet harsh, very similar to a
live gig. This gives off the rock and metal feel again as
these bands are on tour a lot and are exposed to this
type of atmosphere and lighting for the majority of the
time they are on the road. The lighting is also similar to
that of other videos in the same music genre, e.g. Bury
Tomorrow Royal Blood music video. →
3. The MS in this shot is used to capture the atmosphere and what is going on in
the video. It shows that it is a live performance and that it is also a ‘close’
crowd to band event. There are no barriers and no stage to separate them, this
is a representation of the genre. That bands are close to their fans and they
need their fans to be who they are today, and their fans need them.
The lighting in this shot is ‘muggy’ and smoky looking, this could be a
representation of the genre too and how others see this genre. That it is dirty
and heavy.
4. The MCS is used to show the instrument being played, a guitar
which is mainly linked with rock music. Also in the shot you can see
the clothing that he is wearing a tattoos on is upper arm, these
represent the genre strongly. The dark clothing and tattoos both are
symbols of rebellion and anarchy, which are both strong aspects of
the rock and metal music.
5. The LS shows the band and crowd all participating in the singing and movement
together. They are all gain close and doing the same thing, this could connote that
they are all equal and they treat each other the same.
From the mise-en-scene in this shot we can see the type of clothing which is
stereotypical for the genre; all relatively dark clothing, similar to what the band is
actually wearing. The lighting in the shot is also quite smoky, again this can be to
show it is a live show and represent their kind of lifestyle.
6. The lyrics start to match the video in a deeper meaning in the sense
that they say “Keep me strong for holding on, keep us together after
we're gone”. This is meaning that even when they aren’t around their
fans, to keep them going on, encouraging them to stay together to
make the music and perform for their fans. This is shown in the video in
that they are with fans who they are extremely close with, they are
appreciating the moment.
7. The MCU of the vocalist, holding his hand on his heart shows the audience
that it is personal to him. The song as a whole is about what made the band
who they are and the vocalist is expressing that. This is common for the
genre as they are very expressive to what is close to them, although they
have the representation of being tough and ‘bad’, they are actually
expressing themselves through their music.
The blur gives off the feel that you are actually at that show, as that
everything is surreal and a bit of a blur, just like and actual show.
8. The birds-eye camera angle of this shot shows the audience that the crowd is holding
up the singer, this is again showing the closeness of the bands to their fans in this
genre of music.
You can also see the guy drinking a beer in the corner of the shot, this is stereotypical
to the rock’n’roll kind of genre as it is all about drink and partying.
9. Overall, the video is a performance based music video to those
who don’t pay attention or know the lyrics, but to those who know
the lyrics will see that this is a narrative based music video as well.
The shot types, movement and mise-en-scene in the video add up
to the video giving it a strong metal and rock genre which is
obvious to those who watch it.
