An example ofthis is when you listen to music and imagine images.2.There is a relationship between music and visuals. These are either illustrate, amplify or disjuncture.Illustrate is when music videos can use a set of images to illustrate the meaning oflyrics and genre.Amplify is when the meaning of the songs are added to by the visuals.Disjuncture is when the meaning of the song is completely ignored.3. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of theartist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking, through screens withinscreens, mirrors, stages and female body.6. There are often intertextual reference to other media areas e.g. film, tv, othermusic videos etc.
  2. 2. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUALS“When you‟re out with the boys” “She turns up” The relationship with lyrics and visuals allows the audience to engage with the music video as they know what they are seeing to an extent and feel they can connect with it.
  3. 3. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSICAND VISUALS The camera follows up close to the band on the stage and the band all moves when the music „‟kicks in‟‟ It then goes on to the vocalist moving about to the beat of the music/drum. As the music builds up it‟s pace and kicks in, the band all jumps with the music.
  4. 4. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSICAND VISUALSThe relationship between the music and the visuals allows the audience toengage with the song and feel the need to move whenever the band does inthe video. The music video illustrates a balance of narrative and performance as thereare parts of the video in which it follows a narrative theme of professionalrobbers and other parts are performance of the band on stage performing
  5. 5. DEMONSTRATING GENRECHARACTERISTSDon Broco fits into the Alternative Rock genre and follows the same stylemusic videos as other bands in this genre. This is narrative and performancebased music videos. There is a lot of stage performance in this video which is stereotypical of thegenre. Another thing which is stereotypical of the Alt Rock genre is for theband to be incorporated into the video throughout the narrative andperformance parts. Don Broco demonstrate this very well in their video asthey are shown in both narrative and performance. Band Playing Stage performanceFeatures Band
  6. 6. The demands of the record label include the need for lots of close ups of the band/vocalist.This is to promote the band and to get more sales as the audience feels engaged when theysee the artist/band they like up close.
  7. 7. NOTION OF LOOKINGThere is a frequent reference to the notion of looking in this video as the bandhave a lot of shots of them playing in stage/ in an abandoned building. Thismakes the audience feel engaged to carry on watching as they feel part as ifthey are perhaps there. The music video also shows a woman, she is demonstrated in a voyeuristicway. This is somewhat stereotypical as the genre is very male dominated andthe woman being shown as a sex object in lingerie clothing, with blondeperfect hair and makeup.
  8. 8. There are intertextual references in this music video tomovies and/or TV programmes in the fact that at thebeginning of the music video the screen freezes on theband members faces and the background changes redwith their names coming up big and bold. This is similarto what cartoons or old style „cobs and robbers‟ films do.
