2. Music genre conventions
• These are used to express the difference between the genres of music for
example a pop video is quite light hearted and gives the people viewing it
a positive feeling and the genre is used in night clubs to give euphoric
feeling.
• While a metal genre can sometimes give the viewers a slight negative
feeling as the videos will show a dark negative view of real life events like
people getting bullied or having other negative events happen to them.
• Another example of music video genre is alternative which is the one that
I have chosen for my music video that I might be creating this is a genre
that has not been used much so many people don’t really know what it is
about.
3. Pop music video example
This is a screenshot of a pop genre music
video of a scene where the singer is on a
skateboard followed by others.
The attire of the singers is modern and in with the current
fashion of V-neck shirts chains etc. This is fairly common
with the pop genre as the artists will more often than not
launch their own fashion trends.
The scene is light hearted
with a feel good theme going
on to boost people into
having a good time.
The camera uses the natural lighting of
day time as the audience cannot see any
extra lighting on the people in the music
video it keeps up the appearance of
bright natural daylight which gives the
video a light hearted theme.
4. Alternative music video example
This is a genre of music video that is unconventional in its
presentation as it is not that well known and has a very
large range of conventions that define it.
This video clip shows a man being dragged through
a doorway by an unknown entity this fits the
alternative music genre as it is unique and doesn’t
fit in with the norm that the public
This will give the audience the impression that the
music genre is quite mysterious and unpredictable as
the genre doesn’t follow a prearranged path.
This makes the genre as a whole very diverse and can
be from multiple different views either on politics are
social.
5. Metal music video example
This is a screenshot from a
metal music video it shows
the band in a standard line
up formation playing
instruments to the crowd
below them in a live
performance.
This is different to the other
examples as it takes on a dark
and angry edge to it which is
most commonly related to the
metal genre of music video.
The attire of the band within this screenshot is
mostly black which is a further reference to the
genre being aggressive as the colour black
represents aggression and their facial expressions
also represent the aggressive attitude that they
currently show to the audience.
The instruments that the band are equipped with
make a reference to the metal genre as it is
renowned for its heavy use of such instruments in
the creation of their tracks and records.
The camera angle in which
the screenshot displays is a
full body shot so the
director can show the band
members in their full
appearance tall and
imposing over the audience
who are below them.
