1. There is also detail out lining
what’s happening in each shot
to make it clear
Storyboards
Storyboards areused when making either a film, TV show or an advert
normally. They allow the producers to create a visual image of the idea they
have in their head so they can see how it would play out when creating the
final product. Italso gives them the chance to see any flaws in their idea so
they can improveon it. A story board is set out so that you can see how the set
is formed for each shotas well as the camera angles and movements involved.
If storyboardsweren’tused in the pre-production stages of creating a media
piece is would have a huge impact not only on time but also on cost. If a
producer was to show up on set and start making things up on the spotthey
would have no idea where to start and their ideas would keep changing. This
means that they would have to spend moretime on set over moredays
meaning that costs would haveto go up for crew wages as well as equipment
hire. This is why storyboards are so importantas they allow the producer to go
into filming with a clear idea of all the shots that need to be filmed and this
makes the process of filming run smoothly.
This is the story board fromJurassic Park:
images are drawn showing every
detail of how the producers want
the sceneto look leaving no
roomfor mistakes.
2. Shrek is a big ogre who lives alone in the woods, feared by all the people in the land of
Duloc. When Lord Farquaad, the ruler of Duloc, exiles all the fairy-tale beings to the
woods, Shrek loses his peaceful life and his home becomes a refugee camp. So he sets
out to find Lord Farquaad and convince him to take the fairy-tale beings back where
they belong, and leave him alone. Lord Farquaad accepts, under one condition. Shrek
must first go and find the beautiful young princess Fiona, who will become Farquaad's
bride. So the big Ogre begins his quest, along with his newfound donkey friend...
The storyline gives a brief
account of what each
character is like.
Italso shows key plot points
within the film.

Storylines
A storylineis a detailed description of the plot that a film, TV series or even a
digital game is all based around. Without this justlike withouta storyboard
the producer and his team would be making things up on the post and wasting
time and money. It’s importantthat the producer knows thestoryline fully so
during filming he knows exactly what he expects to be doing and this is the
same with the rest of the crew especially the actors so they know what
scenario there character is in and how they should be acting.
This is a summarised version of the storylinefor Shrek as a normal one consists
of lots of pages.
Storylines are a vital part of the pre-production phaseas if a producer goes off
without a plan and wants to create a media piece they will have no idea what
they are doing so it’s key that they have a set idea and follow it to make sure
things run smoothly. The last thing producers wantis to be seen as being
unorganised and not knowing what’s going on so they haveto makethings up
on the spot. If a producer gets a reputation of someone who does that then
people aren’tgoing to want to help producetheir pieces of media.
3. Page Mock-ups
A page mock-up is usually used when making a magazine, app for a phone or a
website. For every single part of the media piece they will get someone who
specialises in this to draw whatthe producer wants it to look like. This is done
so when they go to the graphics designer they aren’tjusttelling him whatthey
want at the time only for it to turn out not how they want it to and then having
to get them to design it again. This not only wastes moretime but also money
as you will have to pay him for more hours work. Whereas with a mock up
when your happy with it you can justhand it to the designer who can copy it
and make it in to a digital version and it’s exactly how you want it to be.
This is an example from Fox’s
5-year anniversary and how
they wanted their website to
look for the anniversary:
As you can see it is a sketch
drawing of how they want
their website to look. This is
the fronthome page and
includes every single feature
they want it to haveand
whereabout it should be.
A good thing about a page
mock up is that you can
always go back and revisit
your idea to make it better.
You may try something that
seems good in your head but
doesn’tactually look how you
imagined. This is why page
mock ups arevital aspect of pre-production.
4. Scripts
A scriptis created during pre-production and its purposeis so that the
actors/hosts know whatto say and when. This is used in TV shows, films, radio
and more recently in digital games. This is a important part of pre-production
as similar to the actors you don’t want to have to make it up on the spotand
wastetime
Here’s a small example fromthe TV show Friends:
Scripts are a vital aspect of media as if there wasn’tone created the whole
process could take a lot longer as they would haveto come up with what
they’resaying on the spot.
There is a short paragraph that
sets the seen so the actors know
what is happening within the
scene.
The characters have what they’re
saying under their name
It also what additional sound
effects there are so the actors
can allow time for them to be
placed in.
