1. City States
• The number of city-states increased in the
northern part of Italy
• So more of trade and exchange of ideas/culture
2. Wealthy Merchant Class & Medici’s
• More the money, more the investment in to art and
culture (more education)
• Florence (city state) was ruled by the Medici
Family

• In 1434, Cosimo de Medici won control over
Florence for 30 years
• Medici’s ruled as dictators but kept the
appearance of elected government

11. NORTHERN RENAISSANCE
• By 1450-1453 the population of northern Europe
started to increase after the plague and the France
–England war.
• As the population increased, more wealthy people
became, so more of money was allotted for art,
which increased the number of artist
• As the renaissance spread out from Italy it first
reached northern Europe, as a result northern
renaissance developed its own character

• Due to wars in Italy artist and writers fled away to
northern Europe for a safer place, they brought in
the flavour of Italian renaissance
• German Painters- The most popular artist of that
time was Albrecht Durer, who worked mostly for
religious sculptures
• Flemish Painters- A very well known Flemish
artist was Jan Van Eyck, he developed oil based
paints and created new techniques for the same
which are used presently

• Women’s reform- Christine de Pizan was the first
women to earn a living as a writer. Writing in
French, she produced many books, including short
stories, biographies, novels, and manuals on
military techniques.
• Renaissance reached England in mid 1500’s, this
era was known as The Elizabethan Age. This is
because of the Queen Elizabeth 1(1558 to 1603)
• William Shakespeare- He was the most famous
writer of Elizabeth age. He is also known as the
greatest play writer of all time.

• Block printing was invented in China and reached
all over the Europe. Using the printing press the
work became hundred times faster.
• This decreased the price for books and poor
people also could buy the books. Causing more of
education through out the world.

• By tenth century the Roman Catholic Church had
become dominating all over the Europe
• By 1500, catholic church had become weak due to
the questioning attitude of the public
• In 1500’s the Christian humanist started to go
against the church and gained the support of the
civilians
• Martin Luther’s parents wanted him to become a
lawyer instead he became a monk and a teacher

• In 1517 Luther decided to take public’s side
revolting against one of the popes
• Luther’s theses were printed and he was known
over whole of the Germany, and than everybody
joined his revolution
• Luther’s teachings were based on three main
ideas:

1. People could win salvation only by faith in God’s
gift of forgiveness. The Church taught that faith
and “good works” were needed for salvation.
2. All Church teachings should be clearly based on
the words of the Bible. Both the pope and Church
traditions were false authorities.
3. All people with faith were equal. Therefore,
people did not need priests to interpret the Bible
for them.

• Many of the popes and emperors tried to threat
Luther but he did not fall back but tried to bring
justice
• Peasants got influenced by Luther’s ideas and
joined the revolution
• Due to this difference in opinions Germany was on
war and than it spread throughout the continent
• In England a man like Luther was Henry the 8th
who was against the church

• Elizabeth the 1st of England tried to restore the
churches but she was not that successful
• Elizabeth was given warnings and threatened by
other kings and citizens
• Elizabeth started to run out of money so
rebuilding churches was stopped

26. REFORMATION CONTINUES
• On the same path as the Luther, John Calvin leaded
Switzerland
• Religious reformation was lead by Huldrych
Zwingli, who was catholic priest
• He influenced by religion and humanism both
• In 1536, Calvin published Institutes of the Christian
Religion, which talked god, salvation, and about
human nature
• Popes started to lose power and truthful popes to
god were given power
