 THIS SUPERSEDED THE COST AND SLOW PRODUCTION.
HISTROY OF 3D Printing
3D printing was invented in the year 1984 by Charles Hull
with the advancements in printing methods after the
invention of inkjet printers in the year 1976.
Charles Hull is the co-founder, executive vice president and
chief technology officer of 3D systems.

Subtractive
Manufacturing
• Creates a product by removing sections from a block of material.
• Generates waste through the excess material that is removed.
• Limited design capabilities.
Computerized Numerical
Control (CNC) Machining
• A method of Subtractive Manufacturing
that removes sections from a block of
material by cutting or drilling the excess
material away.
3D Printing
• A method of Additive Manufacturing that adds material to an object
layer by layer to create the final product.
Technique
A person creates a 3D image
of an item using a computer-
aided design (CAD) software
program.
The CAD information is sent
to the printer.
The printer forms the item
by depositing the material in
layers—starting from the
bottom layer—onto a
platform. In some cases light
or lasers are used to harden
the material.

(for example, a carbon
dioxide laser) to fuse small

Stereo lithography is
an additive
manufacturing process
using a vat of liquid
UV-curable
photopolymer ”resin”
and a UV laser to build
parts a layer at a time.

file format which uses many little
triangles to make a 3 dimensional plot

Laminated object

clients. They found 3D printing to be a

presentation model.

(KMC), the world’s largest
manufacturer of general aviation

for an aircraft quickly; the process
would otherwise take an estimated
3-4 weeks.
