Media and Culture: Two Dimensions of Globalization

A critique of the "cultural imperialism" model of media globalization, in which media are seen as agents of cultural domination. In this model, globalization is broken down into two dimensions, a vertical one in which industrialized media products designed for mass consumption are distributed worldwide, and a horizontal one in which media allow for interactions among cultures and formation of cultural hybrids.
