3.5 RESEARCH
PART 2 – PRESENTATION
AND ANALYSIS
After data collection
WHAT IS NEXT?
 Have you collected enough data?
 How are you going to present the data?
 How are you going to answer the written
questions?
TASK 3: COLLECTION OF DATA
 Check everyone in the group has a copy of
the results for both St Leonard’s and Muriwai
on a planning sheet.
 You can also collect any secondary data you
want ie aerial photos, photos , climate data.
TASK 3: Marking Criteria
 You must have been seen collecting data
 Data tables are produced for both beaches.
(hand in your Muriwai books and data
collection sheets as evidence)
 For Achieved these must be complete and
accurate
From this point on all work is
individual.
 The planning and collection of data can be
done as a group so you can work together on
this. Everyone must have a copy however.
TASK 4: PRESENTATION OF
DATA
 You need to think about 3 different ways you
can present this data.
Ideas are:
 Graphs (each type of graph is one presentation
method)
 Wave length/height diagrams (ie how the
process happens)
 Gradient diagrams
 Wind roses
 Sketch maps and field sketches
 Aerial photos and maps
 Photos that are annotated
Check you know the
conventions needed for each
presentation type
Common conventions required are:
 Axes labelled
 Title appropriate
 North point for maps and field sketch
 Frame for maps and sketches
 Scale where appropriate (can estimate)
 Key, labels or annotations
 Comparison is shown between 2 beaches
 Bars are shaded
For these presentations to
count
 Each presentation must relate to both
beaches
 They should allow comparison to be seen
 They must relate to research ie annotate
maps / photos to link to research
TASK 4: Marking Criteria
ACHIEVED: Two presentation methods with conventions
MERIT: Three presentation methods with conventions
and used to good effect i.e. show comparison
between beaches
WHEN TO DO THESE
 ONE of your presentations must be done in
class in the assessment booklet for
authenticity purposes
 The others may be done at home and glued
into the correct section of the booklet.
TASK 5: ANALYSIS PART 1 -
WHAT
 Look at your data presentation. What does
this tell you? What are the trends? Describe
these using specific information.
 Remember it is about the DIFFERENCES of
the two beaches. State what these differences
are and calculate the scale of these. (e.g. this
means the velocity of LSD is 2 times faster at
Muriwai than at St Leonards)
TASK 5: ANALYSIS PART 2 -WHY
 Use your notes in your 3.1 book to help you here. This should
explain WHY the trends you noted in the previous question
occur.
 Again remember it is about the DIFFERENCES of the two
beaches
 You also must state the SIGNIFICANCE OF FACTORS that
have caused these differences between the 2 beaches. E.g.
Which factor was MOST important
 GEOGRAPHIC CONCEPTS (e.g. interaction, process,
location) and TERMINOLOGY should be integrated and
related to your research questions throughout your answer
 Use ONLY the space you are given for your answers. No
extra sheets. You may want to prepare for this first and plan it
out.
TASK 5: Marking Criteria
ACHIEVED
 2 differences between beaches are described using field data
 Analysis of data is completed that helps to answer research
questions (gives a valid reason why TWO of the differences
in the 2 beaches occurred)
MERIT
 Several (3 or more) differences between the beaches are
described in detail using a range of specific field data
 Analysis of data allows valid conclusions to be reached.
SEVERAL reasons for the differences in the beaches are
suggested. Each reason is SUPPORTED BY APPROPRIATE
DETAIL
 Geographic concepts and terminology should be included
TASK 5: Marking Criteria
EXCELLENCE
 Several (3 or more) differences between the beaches
are described in detail using a range of specific field
data (as for MERIT)
 A critical analysis is completed that allows valid
conclusions to be reached. This includes DETAILED
REASONS for the differences in the 2 beaches and
evaluates the SIGNIFICANCE OF NATURAL FACTORS
or COMPONENTS in causing these differences.
 Geographic concepts and terminology should be
integrated throughout your answer
TASK 6: PROVIDING CONCLUSION(S)
 These are simple statements only – you do not need
a lot of writing. This is a summary only, no new
information is to be introduced here
 Go back to the original research questions and write
about 2-3 sentences on each of them that answers
them succinctly.
 What were the differences and why?
TASK 6: Marking Criteria
ACHIEVED: A valid conclusion is given that relates to
the research questions
MERIT: A RANGE of conclusions are given that
are accurate and valid. Each conclusion
is supported by an appropriate piece of
relevant detail
TASK 7: EVALUATION
 Evaluate the research process you undertook.
To what extent did you research methods and
approaches allow you to collect sufficient and
valid data to answer your research aims
 What were the strengths and weaknesses of
your methods used?
Evaluating the research process
Think about what let you down in terms of the
following:
 The field equipment
 Amount of data collected
 Methods of collecting data
 Timing of data collection
 The group collecting it – were all groups the
same?
 Processing techniques.
DON’T FORGET TO LINK EACH STRENGTH OR
WEAKNESS TO THE VALIDITY OF YOUR DATA
Evaluating your research
process
 How did the strengths or weaknesses you
have identified in the research process impact
on the validity of your findings or conclusions?
 What let you down? Were the conditions
typical when you collected your information?
TASK 7: EVALUATION cont.
 Critically evaluate the research process by
suggesting alternative methods you could
have used to undertake the research and the
implication this would have had on your
research
Alternative methods
 If you had no budget or time constraints how
could you have improved your research?
 What other methods could you have
included?
 What would the implications of using these
alternative methods have been? How might
this have changed what you found out?
TASK 7: Marking Criteria
ACHIEVED: Analyses strengths AND/OR
weaknesses and how this may have
affected the validity of the findings
MERIT: Analyses, in detail, the strengths and/or
weaknesses of the research process
and analyses in detail the impacts on
the validity of findings. Includes
explanation about how specific
strengths/weaknesses impact on
specific findings and reasons for this
EXCELLENCE: As above for Merit criteria AND
discusses alternative research
methods and their possible implications
Time frame
 You will have up to 3 LESSONS to complete
the rest of this internal booklet during Week
12
 This means Tasks 1-7 will be completed
before the school holidays
Last pieces of advice
 This assessment is not hard if you PREPARE for it
before hand.
 Always use the rubric to guide you as to what must be
done.
 Give it your best shot. Remember there is NO
reassessment of this and you will only be allowed to
resubmit if a border line case. This is not your choice
but the markers.
 You may only use the space provided – we are looking
for quality not quantity!!
