Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and others at Harvard. It allows users to post status updates, share photos, and connect with friends and family. Studies have shown both benefits and drawbacks of Facebook usage. While it allows easy connection, it can also hurt users' self-esteem, damage communication skills, and increase feelings of depression through social comparison. Research at the University of Missouri found that excessive surveillance of peers' lives on Facebook can lead to envy and depression.

8. Depression- U. Missouri and “Surveillance use”
In recent years the University of Missouri set out to discover what causes Facebook
users to become depressed.
The study included 700 college aged people
While the average user uses Facebook to stay connect to family and old friends, there
are some that use it to “survey” their peers lives.
People seeing others lavish or happy lives, whether it be financial superiority, a new,
happy friendship/relationship or even just happiness have been shown to cause envy
in some, which soon after turns to depression
9. Communication Skills
“The displacement of in-person social interaction by screen interaction seems to be
reducing social skills.”
UCLA phycology conducted a study on 6th graders
The study proved that the 6th graders who spent less time on social media tested
higher and were able to communicate with their peers on a higher level
The study also showed that the 6th graders who spent less time on media outlets
were better at reading others emotions
Of the children who spent more time on media outlets, many were drastically
decreased to sensitivity…causing them to stray away from others
10. Facebook Hurts Self- Esteem
1. For many Facebook users using Facebook frequently may not be beneficial
2. According to studies, Facebook can be tough on mental health.
3. While having a friend on the social media or adding one can make Facebook users
feel happy and connected, but having many friends could be connected with
feeling sad about one’s own life.
4. For example, the status updates when Facebook users read other people’s status
makes Facebooker’s feel worse
5. Research showed that when people with lots of Facebook friends were asked
about their place in life they said they just looked at their friends status giving
them a lower score in how they felt about their life.
