But firstly a short history of the origins of Social
  Media…………….

Up to 1980’s social media was largely classified
  lonely hearts ads in
  newspapers, letters, postcards & landline
  telephone………

 The term Social Media probably referred to a
  social gathering of TV & Newspaper Moguls
  or Nigel Dempster’s celeb gossip page
  everyday in The Daily Mail….
Workplace communication consisted of……….
 Landline telephones, telex, fax & word
 processing machines (late 80’s), typed memos
 and the elephant in the corner which was the
 black & white Rank Xerox photocopier!

  A typical workplace was probably like the
  office in this photograph………
Then we had further technological advances
 such as when…

IBM Invented the PC…………

Sinclair The ZX Spectrum…………….

and Finally………………….
Motorola Invented The Mobile Phone……….
Can you think of any other technology inventions
  that have changed the way we do things?
So what has this all got to do with Social
Media?................
Well as the office, workplace and the world in
general has had to change to cope with 20th
Century technology then so HR (and business
in general) needs to change to incorporate 21st
Century electronic communication
methods…………..
Social Media is one change in that communication
  method…………

Firstly can we define Social Media in sentence?
What Social Media is not ……….

Telling your friends on Facebook that you have just
 got up and after a ##### night out…

 That’s Social News aimed at friends, family & sadly
 people who might be looking to use the information for
 some sinister motive…..
 Whereas Social Media is telling a specific targeted
 community something of interest or
 communicating with a targeted audience such as
 employee to employee
Academic Definition of Social Media…..

Andreas Kaplan & Michael Haenlein define Social
 Media as “ a group of Internet – based applications
 that build on the ideological and technological
 foundations of Web 2.0 and that allows the
 creation and exchange of user generated content”*

Social Media can be targeted to specific
 communities or community groups - ABC’s
 old people, young people, people working for
 XXXXYYY company, local or worldwide
Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, My Space, Google +,
My Tube, bebo

Each of the above has a specific or general targeted
 community….

Log on to a computer in pairs and come up with
 another Social Media organisation to the above &
 explain who are their targeted audience

 Social Media?
1. Enhances Recruitment
2. Enhances Training & Development
3. Enhances Information
4. Enhances Opinion
5. Enhances Staff Morale & Motivation

reason & come up with some ideas that the
reason can help HR perform better or provide
a better service to its customers

Recruitment

   Use LinkedIn etc to hire key staff
   Use YouTube for example to advertise
    effectiveness of the company such as making a
    DVD to introduce the culture and of the company
    for potential new employees to view before
    starting their jobs
   Using Facebook etc for targeting a specific sector of
    potential employees

Training & Development

   For a learning event the trainer creates a
    Facebook page for participants
   Post up coming training events on Company
    Facebook page
   Use to train staff informally on such topics such
    as how to answer the phone, health and safety

Information

   Internal blogs to share information such as new
    employees joining the company
   Provide a who’s who in the company
   Provide internal staff matters (electronic
    version of Company newsletter)
   External blogs to invite outside audiences to

Opinion

   Monitoring social media for conversations
    about the company and its brand
   Purchase free & chargeable tools to enable you
    to monitor conversations
   Ensure employees are delivering positive
    messages about the company

Staff Morale & Motivation

   Share company & employee success internally &
    externally
   Showcase achievements of a particular team or
    individual on Twitter or YouTube
   Set up a Twitter account to allow Staff to comment
    on particular story of interest and put photos in
    order to increase team spirit
Social Media has worldwide impact…. So for
  businesses that import and/or export they can
  let their suppliers or customers informed of
  what is happening in the Company
One thing being hotly debated at the moment

Does access to Social Media need controls?

Does HR need to put content & access controls in
  place ?

Good idea to have a policy that tells staff what they
  can or cannot say on Social Media

  • 6. But firstly a short history of the origins of Social Media……………. Up to 1980’s social media was largely classified lonely hearts ads in newspapers, letters, postcards & landline telephone……… The term Social Media probably referred to a social gathering of TV & Newspaper Moguls or Nigel Dempster’s celeb gossip page everyday in The Daily Mail….
  • 7. Workplace communication consisted of………. Landline telephones, telex, fax & word processing machines (late 80’s), typed memos and the elephant in the corner which was the black & white Rank Xerox photocopier! A typical workplace was probably like the office in this photograph………

  • 9. Then we had further technological advances such as when… IBM Invented the PC………… Sinclair The ZX Spectrum……………. and Finally………………….
  • 10. Motorola Invented The Mobile Phone……….
  • 11. Can you think of any other technology inventions that have changed the way we do things?
  • 12. So what has this all got to do with Social Media?................
  • 13. Well as the office, workplace and the world in general has had to change to cope with 20th Century technology then so HR (and business in general) needs to change to incorporate 21st Century electronic communication methods…………..
  • 14. Social Media is one change in that communication method………… Firstly can we define Social Media in sentence?
  • 15. What Social Media is not ………. Telling your friends on Facebook that you have just got up and after a ##### night out… That’s Social News aimed at friends, family & sadly people who might be looking to use the information for some sinister motive….. Whereas Social Media is telling a specific targeted community something of interest or communicating with a targeted audience such as employee to employee
  • 16. Academic Definition of Social Media….. Andreas Kaplan & Michael Haenlein define Social Media as “ a group of Internet – based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and that allows the creation and exchange of user generated content”* *Kaplan, Andreas M.; Michael Haenlein (2010) "Users of the world, unite!   • 17. Social Media can be targeted to specific communities or community groups - ABC’s old people, young people, people working for XXXXYYY company, local or worldwide
  • 18. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, My Space, Google +, My Tube, bebo Each of the above has a specific or general targeted community…. Log on to a computer in pairs and come up with another Social Media organisation to the above & explain who are their targeted audience

Some Answers: Recruitment  Use LinkedIn etc to hire key staff  Use YouTube for example to advertise effectiveness of the company such as making a DVD to introduce the culture and of the company for potential new employees to view before starting their jobs  Using Facebook etc for targeting a specific sector of potential employees
  • 24. Some answers continued….. Training & Development  For a learning event the trainer creates a Facebook page for participants  Post up coming training events on Company Facebook page  Use to train staff informally on such topics such as how to answer the phone, health and safety
  • 25. Some answers continued…. Information  Internal blogs to share information such as new employees joining the company  Provide a who’s who in the company  Provide internal staff matters (electronic version of Company newsletter)  External blogs to invite outside audiences to
  • 26. Some answers continued…. Opinion  Monitoring social media for conversations about the company and its brand  Purchase free & chargeable tools to enable you to monitor conversations  Ensure employees are delivering positive messages about the company

Staff Morale & Motivation  Share company & employee success internally & externally  Showcase achievements of a particular team or individual on Twitter or YouTube  Set up a Twitter account to allow Staff to comment on particular story of interest and put photos in order to increase team spirit
  • 28. Social Media has worldwide impact…. So for businesses that import and/or export they can let their suppliers or customers informed of what is happening in the Company
  • 29. One thing being hotly debated at the moment Does access to Social Media need controls? Does HR need to put content & access controls in place ? Good idea to have a policy that tells staff what they can or cannot say on Social Media See sample of Social Media Policy…….
