Casablanca Film Essay
Classical Hollywood film sprung up in the 1920s and lasted until the mid to late 1960s. This
type of cinema, now know as the Golden Age of Hollywood, had a very specific style. It used
flashbacks, continuity editing as well as narratives structured around the goals of individual
characters (Belton 44), also known as a deadline device. Stars of that era were chosen specifically
to play the individual main characters and they had more traits than less involved characters, such
as launching the main actions of the story. Verisimilitude, the appearance of being true or real, was
an attribute aspired to be reached through the use of props, settings and dГ©cor. In addition, music
and lighting were used to stimulate an emotional connection and/or response to the story. The film
Casablancais one of the greatest examples of the classical Hollywood era because it embodies
everything the style entails, but especially the mise en scene, sound and lighting used throughout
the film.
Mise en scene can be described as a variety of categories related to the staging of action (Belton
47). Examples of these categories are set design, costume design, performance, movement of
actors, or essentially everything placed on the stage, or in the shot of the movie. Throughout
Casablanca, strategically placed props and details can be sighted, which are used to help the
audience grasp the narrative of the story. When looking at specific items, they are used to help
guide the audience and

Essay on The Power of the Piano
What can appear to gleam and reflect such beauty and craftsmanship yet can be handled by a
three year old. It s sound so pure by a touch of a finger has been in existence for well over a
hundred years and is the foundation for creating music. It s black and white keys produce sounds
when played correctly that can bring tears to one s eyes, touch your heart and soul, bring hope, or
even joy and laughter to an event. All of this power... lies in the piano. The piano from its creation
to this very second had transformed the world of music no matter what class, talent, and ability. To
start off, the word piano is derived from the Italian word pianoforte which means, quiet and loud
respectively ( Pianonet.com ). These words relate to how... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Iron frames which were more durable for then the prior wooden frames. The piano s range of
notes and sound quality would continue to increase as time went on. So how do we
differentiate between the different types of pianos? It s not about the outside but the inside we
re always told that counts. The frame more importantly the strings on a grand piano, are
horizontal ( Piano Play It ). The strings on the inside go away from the keyboard. The other main
subcategory for pianos is Upright pianos. These pianos strings are construed like their name,
horizontally and so is their frame. This arrangement of the strings makes this piano the most
compact of traditional pianos ( Piano Play It ). In addition to your traditional pianos, as time
went on the piano would diversify even more. This paper would be over twenty pages longs if I
broke each one of these down but here are a few. There is the electric piano, which utilized
electromagnetic pickups, and these pickups sense vibrations and magnify and modify the sound
the strings when hit by pressing any key on the keyboard. You find these pianos still used a
couple hundred years late by many R B and Jazz Artist. The toy piano, which is really a
miniature, sized piano, was invented by a 17 year old in 1872. All of this before the 20th century
when we see the emergence of keyboards... which I will discuss later ( Piano Play It ). Pianos have
transformed music by transforming itself over the past 300 plus

White Slavery in Colonial America
Slavery in Colonial North America: The Struggle of Whites
Slavery is defined as the state of a person who is a chattel of another1. When must people hear this
term they think about African Americans struggle in early American history. They conjure up
visions of the American Civil War and the iconic image of the great emancipator himself, President
Abraham Lincoln. The truth to be told though, slavery in United States history predates those events
and figures. It actually started before the United States was even founded. Slavery in the United
States actually was rooted in Colonial North America. As different nations raced to settle North
America they used the cheapest labor to progress their cause economically. But, the ... Show more

As time progressed this was a rarity. More and more the slave owners found ways to keep their
slaves their property. As mentioned above, getting a female slave pregnant was one way. The
owners would consider the pregnant woman non useable. This would make her period longer.
Some owners would count the whole time she was raising the child against her saying that she was
unable to perform her duties fully because she was distracted by the raising of her child. At times
the service of an indentured servant s contract would be passed on to their children due to illness or
death. When servants became ill, the Master would charge them for the medical bills that were
incurred. And often the medical treatment was subpar to keep the servant below a hundred percent
so that the master could continue to rack up time again the servant. Indentured servants had few
rights. They could not vote. Without the permission of their masters, they were not allowed to
marry, to leave their houses or travel, or buy or sell anything. Female indentured servants were often
raped without legal retribution. As mentioned at the start most indentured servants were put to
work in the tobacco fields of Virginia and some of Maryland. This was hard manual labor under the

The widespread use of accessible technology, such as mobile devices and Internet, impacts
massively on people s lifestyles and work. For more and more people, digital technology opens
the door not only to leisure pursuits but also work opportunities, and the mix of both (Chatfield,

among the hot topics in the broader discussion about the future of work. While, some authors
(Horton, 2010; Satzger, Psaier et al, 2012; Ranade, Varshney, 2012) focus on the economic aspects

Taking a quality of life approach, the research questions that this paper aims to answer are: what
are eWorker s individual perceptions and closely held beliefs about their work arrangements? Is
eWork a good work arrangement as perceived by the workers themselves? The focus on
individuals, rather than on policies, institutions, organizations, companies, comes from the need to
understand particularly what these work arrangements mean for individual people and how they
affect their lifestyles and quality of life. This project will define quality of life as The degree to
which a person enjoys the important possibilities of his/her life (Raphael, et. al, 1998: 2) in three
major life domains: being, belonging and becoming (Renwick and Brown, 1996). Being refers to
who one is and includes Physical Being (health, hygiene, nutrition, exercice and general
appearence); Psychological Being (psychological health, feelings and evaluations about the self
such as self esteem) and Spiritual Being (one s personal values, standards of conduct and spiritual
beliefs). Belonging is about the person s fit with her environment and includes Physical Belonging

While the rapid explosion of tourism in these cities have had positive economic benefits since the
rise out of a communist and socialist regime, there has been an inability to raise universal support
from the Czech and German people for the commercialization and westernization that tourism
inevitably brings (Cooper, 1998).
Tourism is one of the major industries in Prague, contributing to its rapid economic recovery in
1990 after the velvet revolution and the fall of communism, with approximately 300,000 tourists
visiting the city every day (Cooper, 1998). While this may seem a positive way of re establishing
itself as a city financially, it is the cultural and historical aspect of Prague that suffers, along with its
people. While the Czech Republic is concerned about the economic future of its nation, it is
simultaneously neglecting to protect the cultural heritage of the nation and its people. As a result
the Republic is further deepening the social cleavages that already exist while inevitably creating
another clone city whose movies, music, fashion and even food have been taken over by
westernization. The city s unique and true culture is thus being threatened with the invasion of Irish
pubs, McDonalds and K Mart and United Colors of Bennetton stores at each corner intensifying the
city s tourist atmosphere (Cooper, 1994). The rise

The Books Of Matthew And 1 Corinthians
Hermeneutical Matthew and 1 Corinthians The books of Matthew and 1 Corinthians are mainly
focused around love and what that is supposed to look like through Christ. Starting with Matthew, it
begins by walking us through the birth of Jesus and all of the events that took place during and
after. It also talks about his baptism and specifically that John the baptist was who performed it.
After everything about Jesusearly life is introduced, it jumps straight into his preaching. Chapter
four of Matthew is where it really begins to talk about Jesus work. Not only does it introduce us
to his preaching styles, but it also quickly introduces Satin who seems to follow Jesus around for
a while attempting to cause problems. Matthew chapter four tells you right off the bat what is
about to take place. The first verse says, Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to
be tempted by the devil. (NIV Matthew 4:1). At this point, Jesus had fasted for forty days and
forty nights, and the first temptation form the devil was food. He says, ...If you are the Son of
God, tell these stones to become bread. (NIV Matthew 4:3). Jesus of course rejects his temptation
and the many more that followed. After these events took place, Jesus leaves to begin his
preaching. In doing so, he also chooses his disciples while walking along the Sea of Galilee. Jesus
took his disciples with him through Galilee and began his preaching there. He healed the sick and
suffering, and also performed

Scott Pilgrim s Nostalgia
Scott Pilgrim s Precious Nostalgia
In the Scott Pilgrim universe time is a central concept. Bryan Lee O Malley expertly layers the
familiar styles of classic videogames, music, and pop culture throughout the series to create
nostalgia. The author uses this nostalgia in order to emphasize the importance of the past and show
Scott s inability to grow. As Ryan Lizardi puts it in his essay Scott Pilgrim vs. hegemony: nostalgia,
remediation, and heteronormativity, Scott must deal with his past... his inability to grow up
compared with other characters, and...conquer Ramona s romantic history before they can move on
in their relationship, (Lizardi, ). The intertwining themes of past and immaturity reappear
throughout the series through the previously state medium of nostalgia.
Throughout the Scott Pilgrim series classic rock motifs are woven into the text in order to create a
feeling of nostalgia. An example of this is pages 17 20 in the first volume of the ... Show more

Anny Lyman was recruited to Challenge Products Corporation (CPC) from their competitor
because she has expertise in marketing and creativity. She is such a hardworking and creative

manager in her previous organization. Before she was hired, CPC s products were very dominant
because of high quality, low costs, and durability of the design. But this has since changed because
of the cheaper look alike products introduced into the market. As a result of this, CPS s market

Wallis Simpson Essay
American socialite Wallis Simpson, the woman for whom Edward VIII gave up the throne in
1936, is variously portrayed as a greedy snob, a sexual predator or part of the romance of the
century. A complex figure emerges: a strong willed woman, hungry for independence, but caught
up in a situation she could not control. Mrs. Wallis Simpson has become an emotional figure in
history. Along with this, many descriptions of her personality and motives for being with Edward
have caused some extremely negative descriptions; the nicer ones range from witch to seductress.
So who really was Mrs. Wallis Simpson? Bessie Wallis Warfield, named after her aunt and her
father, as she was born in Baltimore, Maryland, was something of a misfit from the start.... Show

After three years of separation divorced, Wallis began an affair with a married man, Ernest

where Wallis established herself as a hostess. Through contacts at the US Embassy she became
friendly with Thelma Furness, who was married to an elderly shipping magnate and involved
with Prince Edward the future Edward VIII. quot;I really feel so tired of fighting the world all

1934, Thelma Furness left England to visit her sister, Gloria Vanderbilt. When she returned three
months later, Wallis had taken her place as Edward s closest friend. By 1934, the prince was a

Koster Site Analysis
The Koster site located in Eldred, Illinois is an exceptionally unique site because of its multiple
inhabitants over nine thousand years during the archaic period. Each layer of the Koster site
reveals a story of the people living there, and gives a visual into what people living there did,
what they ate, and how they lived day to day life as ancient Native Americans (Indiana University
of Penn 2015). The Koster site is just one of the many archaeological sites in North America, which
seems to be consistent with other ancient peoples living during this archaic time period.
The Koster site is located in the Illinois River Valley, in Green County Illinois. The closest town
located near the site is Eldred (Indiana University of Penn 2015). The site is approximately thirty
four feet deep, one hundred and twenty feet long, and one hundred and ten feet wide. When the site
was found, it was originally associated with the late Woodland Period from approximately one
thousand BCE to one thousand CE. As archaeologists dug deeper, they found that the Koster...

In another study, Heinberg and Thompson (1995) showed ten minute videotapes of commercials to
female students at a college that glamorized thinness or contained non appearance related images.
Women who viewed the videotape that contained images that emphasized the importance of
thinness in regards to beauty, were found to have higher levels of depression, anger, weight
dissatisfaction, and overall appearance dissatisfaction. In fact women with high dispositional levels
of internalization showed greater levels of dissatisfaction with their weight and overall appearance
after watching the tape, in contrast to participants with low internalization who showed a decrease
in dissatisfaction with weight and appearance (Heingberg Thompson, 1995). Brief exposure to
images promoting thinness as a prerequisite to beauty increases psychological distress and body
image dissatisfaction, and as a result of these findings it is important to note that increased
exposure may result in severe consequences (Heingberg Thompson, 1999, pp. 334). Internalization
may help explain why some girls who have the idea that thinness and beauty are linked together
engrained in their mind exhibit disordered eating behavior and higher levels of body dissatisfaction

John F. Kennedy s speech was proving to the nation, and world, that with him, nothing could
bring America down. Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay
any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the
survival and success of liberty (Kennedy 511). Martin Luther King delivered a much more
emotional speech which showed he was extremely genuine about his cause. In I Have a Dream ,
Martin uses his beliefs and past experiences to join the people together. Martin lived in a time
where all Americans were promised the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness (King 371), but the white men still segregated the black men. After a complete
comparison of the great speeches given by Kennedy and King, there are many similarities and
differences. While they both spoke to American Citizens, King addressed those supporting him and
Kennedy addressed everyone. Both speeches were written to unify the American People. Despite
different causes, they both believed in our country s ability to be great. Their speeches may have
been given in two different style, Kennedy being more businesslike and King being very emotional,
but each of them delivered a speech that changed our nation and that will be remembered in our

Eastern Uplands
Proof of volcanic activity related to the break up of Australia and Antarctica is seen at Bunbury,
which is located 150km south of Perth, at the point where the basalt is of early Cretaceous, also on
the middle Jurassic Kangaroo Island. However, evidence of Cenozoic eruptions is only seen in
Eastern Highland. All through the Cenozoic, hot spot volcanic event transpire (Sutherland et al.,

close to the southern and northern margin of volcanic zone at southeast of South Australia and
north Queensland respectively.
Neotectonism is express in different ways in the eastern Uplands of north Queensland, in Atherton

A Humanistic Counselling Approach For Self Knowledge And...
Introduction As a humanistic counselling approach, person centred therapy emphasises the
potential for self knowledge and personal growth (Corey, 2009). It views the deviation from one
s inherent goodness as a source of psychological problems, in turn aiming to increase one s self
awareness to help them direct their life in more satisfying ways (Cooper, 2003). With the person
centred approach being more an attitude than a set of definitive techniques, a better
understanding of its process is formed through connecting theory and practice. As such, this case
study aims to apply the person centred approach to a fictional client based around Lester
Burnham from American Beauty (Cohen, Jinks Mendes, 1999). Initially, an introduction to the
client will be presented, followed by the assumptions, assessment, and goals formed when
working with him from a person centred perspective. Several hypothetical helping sessions will
then be presented. The Presenting Problem Lester is a 40 year old man referred to me for
counselling by his doctor. He is currently married and lives with his wife, Carolyn, and their 16
year old daughter Jane. He is employed as a fast food attendant (Cohen, Jinks Mendes, 1999). At
the initial examination Lester dresses untidily and unshaven, and avoids eye contact. Lester reports
an overall feeling of unhappiness (Cohen, Jinks Mendes, 1999). He stated that he has become

Compare And Contrast Rastafarianism And Buddhism
Around the world there are countless religions being practiced, and each retains their own set of
viewpoints on topics discussed throughout history. Today the two religions of focus are
Rastafarianism and Buddhism, and the topics are ecology, sustainability, and the environment.
Whereas Buddhism and Rastafarianism appear quite different in their terms of environmental
greed, they show important similarities in their values on sustainability and the physical
environment. Before discussing their values, a brief history on each religion, as one is widely
known while the other has a much smaller following. Buddhism began with the enlightenment of
Buddha, at the early age of thirty five he awoke from the sleep of delusion and chose to share his
liberation with those whom he used to suffer with. By the time he passed away, 435 BCE, his
teachings termed Dharma were well known throughout central India. After the rainy season
following his death, his disciple Mahakashyapa gathered his most dedicated followers to establish
what they had learned and begin the widespread dispersion of Buddhism. Sherab Chodzin Kohn,
writer for Buddhism for beginners magazine, states that: Ananda, the Buddha s personal attendant,
recited all the Buddha s discourses (sutras), naming the place where each was given and describing
the circumstances. A monk named Upali recited all the rules and procedures the Buddha had
established for the conduct of monastic life. Mahakashyapa himself recited the matrika,

Disadvantages Of Fair Trade Coffee
In Canada, coffee represents 18% of all consumed beverages, making it the second most popular
drink in Canada, water being the first. Fair trade coffee ensures that the coffee farmers who
produce Canada s second most popular beverage are paid fairly. Fair trade coffee is a partnership
that relies on the collaboration of coffee producers, traders, buyers, and consumers to produce
equitable and sustainable changes in the way we trade coffee (Liberman, S., R.N. 2008). Fair trade
certification was developed in 1988 to guarantee that farmers are paid a stable minimum price
for their product and to empower small scale coffee producers (Cole, N. L., Brown, K. 2014).
However, due to a growing market, fair trade coffee certification is losing sight of its original goal
to help create fair trade circumstances for small scale coffee producers.
The Fair Trade for All implementation which aims to increase the market for fair trade coffee
beans by allowing coffee plantations, who produce large amounts of coffee, to become fair trade
certified. However, supply for fair trade coffee is larger than the demand. This makes it much
harder for small coffee producers to sell their coffee as they must compete with large coffee
plantations who can produce much more coffee, ultimately putting small scale coffee producers at
a disadvantage (Cole, N. L., Brown, K. 2014).
Fair trade certified farmers are paid more for their coffee beans than non certified farmers,
however, fair trade

The song of the Lark, there is a woman who stands on the field with holding hoe, and she stands

Theme Of Spirit In Lucille Clifton s There Is A Girl Inside
Lucille Clifton s There is a girl inside , teaches the reader to never let old age influence one s spirit
and portrays this by using Clifton s own spirit as an example.
Clifton first introduces her message by representing her childhood spirit as a girl inside of her own
body. The narrator then shows the little girls determination to not be changed by age. Clifton s
first few lines of the poem starts with a description of the girl that lives inside her. Clifton relates
the girl inside of her to a wolf to emphasize the girl s energetic and strong characteristic. This is
important to the poem because it displays that Clifton s spirit is still lively and active, regarding
her age. In the next few lines, the narrator says, She will not walk away/ and leave these bones
/ to and old woman (ln. 3 5). This quote implies that Clifton s spirit (the girl) is determined to
maintain young and lively while Cliftons physical body does not. This quote is important because
it shows that a strong spirit is needed to not be internally influenced by age. Cliftons inner self is
fighting against her physical self, which contributes towards Cliftons advice to never let age take
over spirit.
Furthermore, Clifton explains that the girl inside of her is special and unique to emphasize that
Clifton s spirit has not changed. Making the reader understand that Clifton s spirit is special and
unique is important because it emphasizes that the girl is different from her aging body. The
narrator says, She is a green tree/in a forest of kindling (ln. 6 7) to portray the little girls
uniqueness. A green tree in a forest of kindling uses irony to emphasize the little girls
uniqueness. This is ironic because it would be against people s expectations to find a tree in a
forest of small kindling. The speaker adds, She is a green girl/in a used poet (ln. 8 9). Clifton
organized this stanza to make the first two lines be reflective of the last two lines in the stanza.
This quote is related to the previous two lines in the poem and implies what being a green girl in
a used poet means. Being a green girl in a used poet means that Clifton s spirit is what stands out
about her, and Clifton s body is just the body of a poet.
Clifton furthers her

Life During the 1800s
Life during the 1800s was already difficult for many people. When Civil War started, living
became even more difficult for the most of the Americans. Civil War camp life was hard for most
of the people .Northerners won the Civil War. Why did the Northerners win the Civil War? Is it
because of the soldiers who worked together in the camps? Soldiers life during the Civil Warwasn t

with starvation, climate conditions, poor clothing and even routine between battles. During the
fall, they would work on the winter camps but they would extend the stay at one place. Soldier s
life was bad and prisoner s life was worse than the soldier. Conditions were so bad. Thousands of
soldiers died while being held as a captive. Approximately 470,000 soldiers were held captive
during the Civil War. In the camp life soldiers rested when possible. Soldiers were forced to call
camp home in their terms of service. Life in camp was very different for officers and enlisted
men. Many soldiers camps were home for up to three years. Last two years of camp were good
for soldiers. They had enough food and got use to living in camps. On an average day, soldiers

they got trained for battle. Soldier s mostly spent their time in the camp. Most of the men had

Identity In Brave New World Essay
The novel, Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley commences with the tripartite mantra in which the

Bae Respect You Boundaries Research Paper
Does Bae Respect You Boundaries? Reflection Paper
Attending this event has really made me open my eyes more toward situations we may encounter
throughout the course of our life. One main target within this discussion is communication. Any
relationship we have, whether it is our friend, partner, or family, should all consist of communication
. Communication is the foundation for sharing information between people to ensure that
everything is understood and acted upon in an orderly fashion. With the many examples that were
provided and the correct way of responding to have a win win situation, it really changed my way of
thinking. These scenarios helped me to become wiser and experienced if any of these situations
happen to me. I have learned that great characteristics in relationships are loyalty, trust, respect,
love, caring, faithful, and many more. Many of these characteristics should be put into effect when
in a relationship or negative scenarios could happen. These scenarios can be avoided with these
characteristics, communication, and commitment with your partner. Both partners need to be
winning for it to be a win win outcome.

Black History Month By Henry O. Flipper
Black History Month is a time to reflect on the trials and triumphs of African Americans across the
nation, and a time to celebrate the achievements of those who have played a central role in the fight
for equality.
Among the men and women who have fought this fight there are many famous names, but there
are many more who have fought just as hard and their stories have been lost to the tides of time.
This is one of those stories. This is a call to remember those names that have been lost to obscurity
and a call to further explore the history of black history.
Born a slave in Thomasville, Georgia, in 1856, Henry O. Flipper would go on to lead a life of

Cutaneous Receptors Lab Report
A report to investigate how the densities and thresholds of two different types of cutaneous
receptors vary dependent on what part of the body tested
Abstract
The skin detects the modalities of touch and temperature through cutaneous receptors. The aim of
this experiment was to examine the nature of these receptors and their distribution across the body.
The results showed that out of the four skin areas examined, the greatest density of
mechanoreceptors was on the tip of the finger. This was because it gave the highest number of
correct responses in the mapping experiment and the lowest two point discrimination threshold. The
thermoreceptor experiments demonstrated that there was a larger quantity of thermoreceptors
specialized to detect cold stimuli rather than hot stimuli however it did not provide conclusive
results on how these receptors were distributed.
Introduction
This report looks at the cutaneous system. This system detects the modalities of temperature, pain
and touch. These are detected by specialised receptors called cutaneous mechanoreceptors and
thermoreceptors. This report will explore which skin area has the highest density of these receptors
and therefore the greatest tactile and thermal acuity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

David Robert Mitchell s It Follows
In It Follows, director David Robert Mitchell combines the tale of ordinary adolescents coming to
age with a shapeshifting antagonist, as he masterfully blends the paradoxical topics of youthful,
romantic realism and paranormal horror. While more subtle than the stereotypical slasher horror
film, exploring loftier themes such as existentialism, sexual socialization, mortality, and sexual
morality, it never strays from its main purpose: bringing fear and terror to the audience. Mitchell
uses a number of ambitious and creative techniques to navigate this movie of contrast, none more

Not only is there a conflicting dissonance between the diegetic and non diegetic sound as discussed
previously, this element is equally present within the incidental music itself. Quite frequently a
single beat or rhythm is introduced and subsequently grouped with differing, often incongruent
beats, sound effects, noises, and tones. Combining a huge assortment of audio techniques, varying
greatly in style, tone, and tempo, the background score is erratic and unpredictable and it injects the
film with a volatile, unrelenting feel. Futuristic melodies, distorted and muffled noise, screeching
static sounds, pulsating beats, siren like music, pounding, banging, grating, and soft, echoing tunes
are all combined and jumbled together at different times, never letting the audience get comfortable
with anything it hears. This effect is amplified by suddenly starting and stopping, changing speeds,
and alternating levels of volume to the already perplexing and unnerving soundtrack. These
strategies, much like the foreboding antagonist, constantly remind the audience of the looming,
impending doom the characters face, even in the safest of settings and in the most mundane

Discrimation In Religion
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints more commonly known as The Mormon church,
has always received a bad reputation when it comes to discrimation. Since the early 1900 s, the
church, some due to the events in the outside world, made mistakes while growing into the church

American Transcendentalist Writers Essay
Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the
Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was
once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles.
Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph
Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of
writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and
untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to
the more `popular and recent Mark Twain.

Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message,
and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of
America, there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social
commentary or criticism of the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if
[men] had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes
what field they were called to labour in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the
text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It
seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he begins to understand himself through self
realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the question, `Why should they begin
digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little of Thoreau s philosophy on
life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist America in which he
lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine?
Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also
attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from
within the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts.
Clearly Dickinson s poetry was far from anything the American public had

The Ring Of Gyges Essay
The Ring of Gyges Justice has continued to remain one of the greatest significant moral and
political conceptions. The word that originates from the Latin word jus implying a right or a

an act of giving everyone their dues without interfering with their rights. The definitions have gone

Animal Fra As A Allegory In George Orwell s Animal Farm
On the surface, George Orwell s novel Animal Fra is about a group of neglected animals that
overthrow their owner and take control of their farm. However, under the surface this novel is a
allegory detailing the events of the russian revolution. Orwell wrote Animal Farm in the response
to the corruption happening during the Russian Revolution. This was his first political and
artistic purpose. The authors use of anthropomorphism and common diction leads us to believe
he intended the novel to be read by the everyday man or lay person. Orwell wrote this as a
warning to the readers with its central theme that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts. The
author uses a detached 3rd person narrative to describe the events as they unfold in the story.
While Orwell uses many stylistic devices in Animal Farm the two that impact the reader the most
while developing the message are symbolism and irony.Ultimately, Orwell effectively fuses ( or
blends) his political and artistic purpose into a single powerful work of art in his short novel
Animal Farm.
George Orwell s essay Why I Write is a small bibliography about his experiences with writing and
how his writing has changed overtime. In this he also includes some of the 4 purposes of writing.

The Northern Illinois Bus system currently runs multiple busses with 12 different bus routes that

The Coca cola bottlers incident where union members and the workers are murdered started on

by a company that harms other people s lives. Sometimes they harm the ecosystem as well.
However, on this case, the Coca cola bottlers did not harm the ecosystem but they hurt their own
workers and the union members. Coca cola bottlers hired illegal paramilitary groups to

To What Extent Did The British Colonies Acquired Self Rule

that were most detrimental. The British occasionally aroused themselves and tried to secure better
enforcement, but efforts along these lines were invariably short lived, the authorities quickly falling
back into a policy of salutary neglect. (O Mahony, Benedict. The Colonial Period. N.p., n.d. Web.

Characteristics Of The Leopard
The Leopard
Long ago, the leopard and the Ethiopian, his white hunting companion, lived in a place called the
High Veldt. The two dominated this vast grassland, and they were able to hunt and catch any
animal they wished. Their favorite meals consisted of the plain sandy yellow brown coated giraffe
and zebra. One sunny day, the giraffe and zebra were hiding from the leopard and Ethiopian within
the shadows of the trees. Mysteriously, jagged shadow shapes appeared on the fur of the giraffe
and the zebra. The prey became permanently striped and spotted and were so well camouflaged
that the leopard and Ethiopian were now incapable of finding lunch. The two hunters knew they
needed to up their game, so the Ethiopian turned his skin black. The leopard asked his companion
to give him spots so he could blend in, too. The Ethiopian pressed his five fingertips all over the
leopard s plain coat; both of them were now camouflaged just like the giraffe and zebra.
This retelling of Rudyard Kipling s How the Leopard Got His Spots is a fanciful fable which
portrays the cunning nature of the leopard. Besides its stealthiness and competitiveness, this
spotted wonder possesses several other traits which display God s originality in creating it. In order
to understand the significance of the leopard, one must understand its physical characteristics and
behavior, unique habitat and hunting strategies, and extreme threats to its existence.
It s helpful to understand the taxonomy and naming

Nt1310 Unit 5 Programming Language Analysis
When the sequential execution of the program flow breaks, the control jumps to another part of the
program such type of branching is known as conditional branching. On the other hand, if the
branching happens unconditionally, then it is known as unconditional branching. The decision
making statements supported by most of the programming languages include: 1.if statement

statements and it is mainly used for controlling the execution flow of statements within a program.

How then and else clauses stated? How should the importance of nested selectors be stated? In
most of the programming languages, then clause and else clause is a compound or a single
statement. However, in case of Perl, all of these clauses have to be compound statements though it
may have single statements. Braces are used in most of the programming languages that indicates
the body of then and else clauses. The compound statements are specified by the use of indentation
in case of Python, like: if x y: x = y print case n Note that all the compound statements are given
equal indentation. Instead of writing the then clause, colon is made used especially in Python.
Simple if statement The syntax for simple if statement is given as: if

Why We Should Abortion Be Illegal
Abortion must be illegal in order to save the lives of the unborn. Nobody deserves to be killed by
cause of an unwanted pregnancy. Can you imagine a world without no babies being born? We will
have nobody to love us unconditionally . The process of an abortion leaves the woman with the
feeling of neglect and regret. Nobody should let a baby die, that s why they could give them up for
adoption. Abortionis the definition of murdering, there s many solutions and other ways out that
could help you eliminate abortion. Even though abortion is ending with innocent children s lives,
nobody actually cares how this situation is developing. A large number of countries ban abortion
while others institutions fight against it, in order, to end the usage of abortions, everyone should

Business Intelligence Is The Broadest Category And...
Business Intelligence is the broadest category and encompasses the other three terms here (at
least as they re used in a business IT context). BI is data driven decision making. It includes the
generation, aggregation, analysis, and visualization of data to inform and facilitate business
management and strategizing. All the other terms refer to some aspect of how information is
gathered or crunched, while BI goes beyond the data to include what business leaders actually
do with the insights they glean from it. BI therefore is not strictly technological; it involves the
processes and procedures that support data collection, sharing, and reporting, all in the service of
making better decisions. One of the trends in recent years has been away from systems that rely
on IT staff to provide reports and graphs for decision makers toward what s called self service BI
tools that allow business users to generate their own reports and visualizations to share with
colleagues and help everyone choose what course to take.
Two industry cases where such a revolution has brought in path breaking impact on Business. These
are:
1.Netflix and Consumer Big Data Visualization
Netflix is reinventing television. With 60+ million subscribers, Netflix is a major player among
media and broadband companies. We provide streaming services so people can watch whatever
they want whenever they want said Blake Irvine, a manager in the Data Science Engineering group
at Netflix. With 300 billion

Phineas Gage Research Paper
Phineas Gage, a railroad worker, was accidently struck by a piece of iron through the frontal lobe
after an explosion he set himself (Phineas Gage Information). The iron piece shredded the front
left side of his brain when it entered under his cheek bone and exited out the top of his head
(Phineas Gage Information). Phineas was treated after the explosion by Dr. John Martyn Harlow
(Phineas GageInformation). The treatment by Dr. Harlow allowed Phineas to return back to his
house only ten weeks after the incident; which is a significantly short time considering the trauma
from his accident and the medical advances at this time were not nearly what they are today
(Phineas Gage Information). The accounts of his personality change seem to have differencing
opinions (Phineas Gage Information).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Harlow, his treating physician, took reports from a previous boss and former friends (Phineas
Gage Information). They gave reports of Phineas s personality before as being the most capable
and efficient foreman, one with a well balanced mind, and who was looked on as a shrewd smart
business man (Phineas Gage Information). While after his accident the previous contractors would
not give Phineas his job back saying that he was fitful, irreverent, and grossly profane, showing
little deference (Phineas Gage Information). They also described him as impatient and obstinate
(Phineas Gage Information). The most prevailing statement was from Phineas s former friends
when they stated the Phineas now was No longer Gage. (Phineas Gage Information). However, it
should be noted that the article mentions that many rumors of Phineas s life were strange mixtures
of slight fact, considerable fancy and downright fabrication (Phineas Gage Information). It was
proven through the work that Phineas kept a new occupation for years after recovery from the
explosion (Phineas Gage

IU Personal Statement
After I attended a campus visit this summer, I knew that I wanted to call IU my humble abode.
As an undergraduate at IU I plan to partake in and enjoy as many activities that I can; whether
that s tailgating on a friday night or drinking a fat free latte in the Indiana Memorial Union. When
I m not busy studying, I plan to pursue my love for helping people. Community service has
always been a big part of my life and I want to continue my volunteerism at IU. Along with being
active in the community I am eager to join the CollegeRepublicans at Indiana University. I come
from a very politically active family but I actually have never been into politics. Lately however,
it s began to spark my interest so I guess it s time to see what all the

  • 2. Casablanca Film Essay Classical Hollywood film sprung up in the 1920s and lasted until the mid to late 1960s. This type of cinema, now know as the Golden Age of Hollywood, had a very specific style. It used flashbacks, continuity editing as well as narratives structured around the goals of individual characters (Belton 44), also known as a deadline device. Stars of that era were chosen specifically to play the individual main characters and they had more traits than less involved characters, such as launching the main actions of the story. Verisimilitude, the appearance of being true or real, was an attribute aspired to be reached through the use of props, settings and dГ©cor. In addition, music and lighting were used to stimulate an emotional connection and/or response to the story. The film Casablancais one of the greatest examples of the classical Hollywood era because it embodies everything the style entails, but especially the mise en scene, sound and lighting used throughout the film. Mise en scene can be described as a variety of categories related to the staging of action (Belton 47). Examples of these categories are set design, costume design, performance, movement of actors, or essentially everything placed on the stage, or in the shot of the movie. Throughout Casablanca, strategically placed props and details can be sighted, which are used to help the audience grasp the narrative of the story. Clifton s first few lines of the poem starts with a description of the girl that lives inside her. Clifton relates the girl inside of her to a wolf to emphasize the girl s energetic and strong characteristic. This is important to the poem because it displays that Clifton s spirit is still lively and active, regarding her age. In the next few lines, the narrator says, She will not walk away/ and leave these bones / to and old woman (ln. 3 5). This quote implies that Clifton s spirit (the girl) is determined to maintain young and lively while Cliftons physical body does not. This quote is important because it shows that a strong spirit is needed to not be internally influenced by age. Cliftons inner self is fighting against her physical self, which contributes towards Cliftons advice to never let age take over spirit. Furthermore, Clifton explains that the girl inside of her is special and unique to emphasize that Clifton s spirit has not changed. Making the reader understand that Clifton s spirit is special and unique is important because it emphasizes that the girl is different from her aging body. The narrator says, She is a green tree/in a forest of kindling (ln. 6 7) to portray the little girls uniqueness. A green tree in a forest of kindling uses irony to emphasize the little girls uniqueness. This is ironic because it would be against people s expectations to find a tree in a forest of small kindling. The speaker adds, She is a green girl/in a used poet (ln. 8 9). Clifton organized this stanza to make the first two lines be reflective of the last two lines in the stanza. This quote is related to the previous two lines in the poem and implies what being a green girl in a used poet means. Being a green girl in a used poet means that Clifton s spirit is what stands out about her, and Clifton s body is just the body of a poet. Clifton furthers her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cutaneous Receptors Lab Report A report to investigate how the densities and thresholds of two different types of cutaneous receptors vary dependent on what part of the body tested Abstract The skin detects the modalities of touch and temperature through cutaneous receptors. The aim of this experiment was to examine the nature of these receptors and their distribution across the body. The results showed that out of the four skin areas examined, the greatest density of mechanoreceptors was on the tip of the finger. This was because it gave the highest number of correct responses in the mapping experiment and the lowest two point discrimination threshold. The thermoreceptor experiments demonstrated that there was a larger quantity of thermoreceptors specialized to detect cold stimuli rather than hot stimuli however it did not provide conclusive results on how these receptors were distributed. Introduction This report looks at the cutaneous system. This system detects the modalities of temperature, pain and touch. These are detected by specialised receptors called cutaneous mechanoreceptors and thermoreceptors. American Transcendentalist Writers Essay Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles. Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to the more `popular and recent Mark Twain. Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message, and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of America, there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social commentary or criticism of the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if [men] had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes what field they were called to labour in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he begins to understand himself through self realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the question, `Why should they begin digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little of Thoreau s philosophy on life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist America in which he lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine? Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from within the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts. Animal Fra As A Allegory In George Orwell s Animal Farm On the surface, George Orwell s novel Animal Fra is about a group of neglected animals that overthrow their owner and take control of their farm. However, under the surface this novel is a allegory detailing the events of the russian revolution. Orwell wrote Animal Farm in the response to the corruption happening during the Russian Revolution. This was his first political and artistic purpose. The authors use of anthropomorphism and common diction leads us to believe he intended the novel to be read by the everyday man or lay person. Orwell wrote this as a warning to the readers with its central theme that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts. The author uses a detached 3rd person narrative to describe the events as they unfold in the story. While Orwell uses many stylistic devices in Animal Farm the two that impact the reader the most while developing the message are symbolism and irony.Ultimately, Orwell effectively fuses ( or blends) his political and artistic purpose into a single powerful work of art in his short novel Animal Farm. Business Intelligence is the broadest category and encompasses the other three terms here (at least as they re used in a business IT context). BI is data driven decision making. It includes the generation, aggregation, analysis, and visualization of data to inform and facilitate business management and strategizing. All the other terms refer to some aspect of how information is gathered or crunched, while BI goes beyond the data to include what business leaders actually do with the insights they glean from it. BI therefore is not strictly technological; it involves the processes and procedures that support data collection, sharing, and reporting, all in the service of making better decisions.
