Essay On Alcatraz
The Alcatraz federal prison, located on the San Francisco island of the same name, was dubbed
escape proof during its years of operation from 1934 1963 and was designed to hold the worst
criminals in America (Timeline: Alcatraz Escape Attempts). During its 29 years, Alcatraz held most
prisoners without incident, but there were still 14 escape attempts (Timeline...Attempts). June 11,
1962 marks one of the most sensationalized attempts by Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence
Anglin(The Great Escape from Alcatraz). Although officials said the inmates drowned, many claim
they escaped and lived as fugitives (The...Alcatraz). In order to investigate the aforementioned
belief, my group defined a successful escape as getting off Alcatraz, making... Show more content

For example, a 1962 San Francisco Chronicle article Con s Daring Swim Kills The Myth argued
John Paul Scott s swim from Alcatraz Island to Fort Point destroyed...the official position that
escape from the Federal Prison is impossible (p. 1). The publication used Scott s case to apply it
to that of Morris and the Anglins, arguing that if Scott could swim across the bay and survive,
then Morris and the Anglins could, too. All the information is credible because it comes from a
local, primary source, The San Francisco Chronicle. However, the source is not relevant because
Scott s attempt was in December, not June like Morris and the Anglins, and this change in time
would affect weather conditions between cases (The...Alcatraz). Additionally, San Francisco
police apprehended Scott once he reached Fort Point, so he did not fit under our group s
definition of a successful escape (10 Things You May Not Know About Alcatraz). This lack of
relevance makes the information non applicable and outweighs its credibility because the
connections between Scott s case and Morris and the Anglins case are too

David Beckham Research Paper
For those who were born around the 80 s, they might have recalled how David Beckham really
inspired the world of soccer and fashion at the same time. His styles have been inspiring, even until
now. It was started with the mohawk haircut to the nowadays men newsboy hat.
Yes, who would have though that this hat is now reaching its popularity, ever since David Beckham
wore it several times in many ocassions. Of course, we don t need to doubt that he is wearing the
ones from reputable designers. Fortunately, there are options for everyone with different budget for
this stylish newsboy caps.
First thing first, let s consider how men newsboy hat can fit men s common outfits. There was a
history of this hat, in which it was the most popular one among newspaper boys in the 80s.
These days, newspaper boys prefer to wear hats with basketball or baseball team logos. Even in
the 30s when the Great Depression was striking in the US, this hat was representing the lower class
boys. Don t worry, this hat has been through a series of design modification that allows very
fashionable man to wear it, without feeling worried about its mix and match.

The Distribution And Mobilization Of A Groundwater Aquifer
Geochemistry plays an important role the distribution and mobilization of As in groundwater
aquifer. To find the influence of geochemical processes of As mobilization in groundwater of the
study area, the correlation matrix among As and various physio chemical parameter are given in
Table 4. Pearson correlation matrices show that various physio chemical parameters pairs of
groundwatersamples have a significant positive correlations such as TDS EC (r = 1.000), TDS Na
(r = 0.587), TDS Ca (r = 0.624), EC Na (r = 0.617), EC Ca (r = 0.618), Na Ca (r = 0.564), and K Mn
(r = 0.566) respectively. Similarly some pairs have also shown significant negative correlation
such as Mg2+ HCO3 (r = 0.590), well depth Mn (r = 0.518). The concentration of As in
groundwater has insignificantly negative correlated to Fe (r= 0.260), Cl (r= 0.081) and SO42
(r= 0.062), while As has insignificantly positive correlated to Mn (r=0.185), NO3 ( r=0.111),
HCO3 (r=1777), pH (r=0.226), Na+ (r=0.223), K+ (r=0.227), Ca2+ (r=0.262) and Mg2+
(r=0.199). In this study, an insignificant positive correlation between As and Mn has observed,
while an insignificant negative correlation between As and Fe has existed in groundwater aquifer
(Table 4). This finding is in good agreement with the earlier correlation matrix analysis of arsenic

Short Essay About The Aztecs
The Aztecs were a complex civilization, I don t know much about the Aztec Civilization, I only
know the outline. The reason why I chose the Aztecs is because I played a few video games
growing up playing as that civilization, and they have always made me more interested in them.
What I know, is eventually they came upon a spot with an eagle sitting on a cactus with a serpent
wrapped in it s legs, that s where Tenochtitlan would be built. Montezuma was their leader, he was
fierce and strict, but at the same time kind hearted and understanding, but nobody mistook his
kindness for weakness, except for the Spanish. The Aztecs would fight enemies and enslave the
rebellions and sacrifice them. The ones that cooperated, would have to pay tributes every few
weeks though. Those people could live a normal life, just under Azteccontrol. They built things
called skyfarms. Those farms were very well designed and worked in the desert setting they lived
in. The Aztecs... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would also be nice to find out how they survived and thrived so well in that area. The ground
was almost sand, and the weather was dry and warm. I still want to find out more about their
religion, why did they believe they needed to make a sacrifice every day for the sun to rise the
next morning? Did they ever skip a day and know the sun rises the next day? Or did they never
find out? What I want to know the most though, is how their leader Montezuma allowed the
Spanish in with open arms, and let them harass him and his economy, and he let it happen, was
he brainwashed into thinking the Spanish were the new leaders? The last thing I would like to
know about is the rise and fall of the empire, where did they get all of their resources to build
those spectacular buildings? How long did it take for them to finally get defeated by the

Poverty In A Third World Country
One of the things that I am most proud of is the fact that I overcame poverty in a third world
country and I am now living in the U.S., going to college as an honors student with a 4.00 GPA,
leading the Honors Club for the current academic year, and leading my own community project.
I was born in Colombia to a 21 year old single mother. My mom, sister, and I lived in a very poor
and dangerous neighborhood, but my mom always taught us to focus on school and stay out of
trouble. I moved to the U.S. in 2011, when I was 19 years old. When I got here I saved enough
money working as a waitress for almost a year so I could enroll in a community college. In fall of

Modern Theatre Vs Greek Theatre
A Synopsis and comparison of Ancient Greek theater to present times Greece was the first culture
to significantly raise the standards not only for philosophical ideals, mathematical methods
astronomical allegories, architectural influence, medical techniques, and much more, but also
ultimately, the most substantial contribution they charted was theater pioneering. What was
considered theatre back in ancient times is completely unrecognizable to what we are used to
theater nowadays.
Back in the Hellenistic period, 500 to 200 B.C., theatre served a completely different purpose than it
does today; it solely dealt with honoring their Dodekatheon gods rather than entertaining the crowd
and provoking thought. Arguably the theatre was the most important part of the Athenian religious
and social culture where everyone who worked extremely hard throughout the year would look
forward to the month that was dedicated to their most beloved god, Dionysus. Imagine living in
550 B.C., celebrating life for an entire month without having any obligations towards anyone.
Dionysus was the Greek god of grape harvest, and wine, who served as a symbol of pleasure and
ecstasy within Greek culture (Wickham 31). The logic behind that is that every one of the twelve
gods would be celebrated for a month. One might ask, how did they keep track of it? Valid question,
but it really stems from the extremely sophisticated technology and mathematics. One of the
instruments they used was the

Dr. David Burns s The Feeling Good Handbook
Is your thought life making you ill? Mental health experts argee that it can. In fact, some ideas can
ruin you life.
Psychiatrist and educator, Dr. Aaron Temkin Beck (the father of Cognitive Emotive Therapy), first
proposed that false ideas could actually damage mental health. Dr. David Burns popularized this
notion in his book, The Feeling Good Handbook: Techniques and Exercises to Help Cope with
Depression without Drugs, a classic work in the field of mental health.
Though developed by Temkin in the 1960s, Cognitive Emotive Therapyhas only grown in influence
within the mental health field during the past half century. Its therapies have become common tools
in the clinical treatment of depression and have been used by clinicians to address criminal behavior.
The first article in this issue of Watchmen, Assumption Busting, explores how faulty assumptions
can make our problem solving ineffective. Cognitive Emotive Therapy makes a broader claim.
Mistaken ideas can actually ruin our lives and health with bad decisions. Put another way, faulty (or
irrational) thinking makes us ill, but rational thinking restores our mental health and social balance.
According to Cognitive Therapy, our reasoningcan fall into typical irrational traps. These traps are
automatic ways in which we have trained ourselves to misinterpret our experience. As a result, we
base our actions on faulty ideas that lead to bad choices.
The thinking traps listed below are among those Dr.

Subject: Boeing Legal Impact Analysis
Boeing: An Overview
Boeing is the largest aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial and military
aircraft in the world. Boeing s military aircraft come equipped with missiles, satellite, launch
vehicles and advanced information and communication systems. Boeing is also the number one
U.S. exporter when it comes to sales. Boeing s aircraft are flown each and every day, all across
the United States and the world. Because their products are used so heavily, and daily for that
matter, product liability is a major concern for Boeing. The fact that their products interact
directly with the men and women who fly these planes, and that nearly every flight has an
average of 200 or more people on board, these products need to be safe and thoroughly tested. On
that note, health and safety is another major area of legal concern for Boeing. If a fatal accident
were to occur, wrongful death cases are sure to come up if the manufacturer is found at fault. These
cases can cost the company upwards of 100 million dollars in revenue, not to mention the bad
publicity that is derived from them as well. One must take into account that the amount of fatal
accidents that occur where the manufacturer is at fault is on the decline, with only 20 percent of
fatal accidents occurring due to a mechanical failure of some sort, where as pilot error attributes

The Issue Of Child Marriage Essay
Child marriage is one of the hardest things a teenage child could face. It is basically a violation
of children s human rights. It is strictly prohibited by international law. Early marriage takes
away the girls right to make important decisions about their sexual health and well being.
Historically, patriarchal societies have marginalized women in various aspects across the world.
Women disenfranchisement, in this way, is not a new phenomenon. However, with the passage
of time women have been able to claim their rights and are seen at par with men in many
developed societies. But the misfortune still persists in many parts of the world. Many societies
still fail to see woman as fully human and fail to appreciate their role in the building of society. As
a result, women are still subject to grave injustice in many societies and such societies also suffer
from underdevelopment for minimal role of women in their development. Nepal is a country where
women suffer from the issue of Child or Early Marriages . This is a century s long practice in Nepal
and unfortunately nothing significant has appeared in form of tangible indicators that indicate the
improvement in this grave scenario. International community and NGOs are working on this issue
of Nepal as their priority but unfortunately with little success. Nepal government has also been
brought in line on this and it has committed to ensure elimination of this devastating practice by
2030 BS. With its universal consequences,

The Definition Of Obscenity And Obscenity Laws Constructed...
Obscenity revolves around what constitutes pornography and sexually explicit material to be
protected by the First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and press as stated in the
Constitution. I want to look at the language and definitions of obscenity created by the Supreme
Court and interrupt their effects on society. In this essay, I want to argue that the creation of the
definition of obscenityand obscenity laws constructed from community standards can be harmful to
society because they can be interrupted in many different ways. First, I would like to define terms
of what obscenity means and the differences between obscenity, vulgarity, and profanity. Obscenity,
as defined by the Supreme Court case of Miller v. California, believed... Show more content on

In a legal context, obscenity describes expressions that are typically sexual or crude references to
the body or bodily functions that offend the sexual morality of a given time and place. Even though,
this creates a gray are between something considered profane or vulgar language and/or behavior
and obscenity because profanity and vulgarity can offend the sexual morality as well. Nonetheless,
the First Amendment of the Constitution does not protect behavior, actions, or language seen
specifically as obscene.
Next, I would like to explore at what point or context does something turn from being considered
profane and/or vulgar into being considered obscene and therefore, against the law. In Roth v. US,
the court held that obscenity was not within the area of constitutionally protected speech or press .
The Supreme Court made it clear in the ruling that the First Amendment did not protect every
behavior, action, or expression, such as materials that were utterly without redeeming social
importance . The Supreme Court believed the definition of obscenity as stated in the above
paragraph gave a fair warning to the public and satisfied the demands of the Due Process clause in
the Fourteenth Amendment. The Supreme Court wanted to ensure to the public that an individual

Descriptive Essay On My Winter Trip
There s nothing better than streaming down a mountain filled with snow, ski tips pointed straight,
and reaching a maximum velocity. For me, an annual ski trip in the mountains is an irreplaceable
event. The only problem with these trips is living in Kansas. At best, I must travel 8 tedious hours
by car to the West to obtain my ideal vacation. And the return tripis even worse because the fun is
over, your body and patience is exhausted, and you understand the long week of catching up on
to do lists that will follow. Most often, the excitement of the trip far outweighs the tedious trip
home, but in January of 2013, I might have been convinced otherwise as my trip home was filled
with speeding tickets, car problems, cramped spaces, and almost six extra hours of travel. As my
groups last day of skiing at Wolf Creek Ski Resort came to an end, we went to bed in good time in
hopes of leaving very early the next morning for an equally early return to Newton. As the driver, I
was diligently driving through the twisting and turning mountains with a purpose. For those who
have driven in the mountains before, you are well aware of the difficulties of maintaining a
constant speedthrough steep grades of terrain. And sure enough, almost 2 hours into our trip home,
I see a highway patrolmanmake a U Turn, flip on his lights, and I found myself pulling over my
car. Cited for going too fast down the mountain, a very rude and argumentative patrolman did not

Prince Myshkin Essay
Concepts such as compassion, thoughtfulness, and empathy are what people all over the world
would seemingly strive for. Often, however, these benevolent ideas of the way society should be,
are muddled and manipulated by the reality of the way society actually is. Prince Myshkin, a
Russian man who represents the essence of kindness and morality, is thrown into the high society
of Petersburg, a society that is obsessed with money, power and reputation. In his selfless attempts
to save his companions from their destructive evil , Prince Myshkin is in turn transformed and
distorted by a superficial and empty society. The title of the book, The Idiot, fits well with Prince
Myshkin s attitude towards human nature and also does well to highlight his status as an outcast;
however The Idealist is a title that would better suit the Prince s thoughtprocess and actions.
Returning from Switzerland, Prince Myshkin acquaints himself with his distant relations, the

an idiot, Prince Myshkin is isolated and brought into the light as an outcast. Since he is isolated
and considered an idiot, the contrast between Myshkin s character and the society is emphasized.
Others use his illness as a way to justify his strange behavior which is really just his compassion.

The women s movement, including feminist groups, were also complicit in the manufacturing of
this new enemy and demonising and criminalising of the Muslim community. They supported the

Christian, Dalit or Sikh women was treated as domestic violence . The fact that Muslim women

Thus when the war against terror was launched the human rights movement had already

problem is further complicated by the fact that Indian intelligence agencies are now working

Sonny s Blues By James Baldwin
In every individual, a host of socio historical forces converge and influence the subject s ideas.
Consciously and unconsciously, the individual reflects the confluence of his or her history and
culture. In Sonny s Blues , a short story by James Baldwin, the dominant culture constricts the black
individual. Subject to the explicit and latent biases of a racist society, the black population of Sonny
s Blues attempt to endure oppression and suffering and survive in an unforgiving land. However,
they can thrive here with the hope and salvation provided by the communal center of African

Aware of the societal policies and practices discriminating against them, the African Americans in
Sonny s Blues perceive this societal oppression as a darkness surrounding them. The darkness in
Sonny s Blues is the metaphorical embodiment of their suffering and the eventual culmination of
that suffering: death. The narrator remembers the darkness in his youth, when he saw the
darkness coming, and the darkness in the faces (11), which frightened him. The narrator was
afraid of his destiny, afraid of the brutal reality awaiting him, afraid of the finality of death. He
hoped that the hand which stroke[d] his forehead [would] never stop [would] never die... that
there [would] never come a time when the old folks [wouldn t] be around... (11). This darkness,
the darkness of racism and the darkness of death, affects all the black populace of Sonny s Blues.
In response to this darkness, each black character copes in his or her unique way. The narrator
leaves the crime ridden projects of his youth to a better home, where he attempts, under societal
oppression, a stable life. Sonny attempts to escape the darkness by playing music and eventually,
doing heroin. The narrator, in enduring his pains, finds relative stability in family and work;

Modern Technology and It s Effects Essay
Argumentative essay
In our present society, people cannot deny that the changes in this world have been tied to the
advancement of the technology. It has evolved with this society so deeply where such conveniences
are no longer luxuries but rather necessities. Unfortunately, the most affected group of people from
the developed technology is the younger age people (Subrahmanyam, 2000). In the past, children
were more lively and active: playing outdoors, running around, climbing trees and remaining active
rather than watching television and playing video game and computer. It is true that the use of the
technology has its own virtue. It provides value, convenience and entertainment, but it should not

This kind of fats increases the level of cholesterol that could develop problems of heart, joints
and spinal cord (Journal of obesity, 2005). Afterwards, the impact of this problem can lead
children to more intense psychological and medical issues, which can have future reaching
effects even into adulthood (Pitman, 2008). According to the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention in 2004, 16 percent of children in the ages of 6 19 year old are overweight or obese
which could really have a great chance of developing Type II Diabetes, sleep apnea, high
cholesterol and blood pressure (Obesity, 2011). In addition, technology can expose children to a
number of other physical risks: seizures, hand injuries and changes in heart rate (Subrahmanyam,
2000). Obviously, those of the raised problems above are the developed negative health problems
that come from the overused of technology in the children s daily life.
The second reason why modern technology contributes to negative health problems is that children
independently use technology, which impact on their social development and relationship. As the
age of the kids, the majority of them still cannot control or understand how to limit themselves
from their wants. Some children spend so much time playing computer and video games all alone
that they are losing their ability to socialize with others, families and friends. Children can

Visiting and keeping in touch with one another is more of an obligation in Puerto Rican culture
and failing to do so could lead to harsh feelings. It is also considered offensive to turn down a

middle or lower class due to the lack of job options. It is not very common for someone of Puerto
Rican decent to attend college or higher education; the norm is to work instead. The religion of
most Puerto Ricans is Roman Catholic, although very few actually attend services. Spiritualism
is also very common; many Puerto Ricans blend Catholicism with other traditions like

Puerto Ricans. They do not usually live in the same homes, but they do live near or in the same

Andrew Gore Rhetorical Analysis Essay
Al Gore asked three questions, his first question was do we really have to change? His second was,
can we change? And his third was, will we change? Throughout his argument Gore answers these
questions for his audience. Gore s argumentative presentation on climate change and his opinion as
to what could be done about it gave his audience and listeners insight to the problem with climate

Five Forces Analysis Of Nestle
Industry Environment Five Forces I.Threat of New Entrants Moderately High The food
processing industry is very large and competitive; it is not uncommon for firms within the
industry to do quite well. As a result, many companies enter into the market every year in an
attempt to gain a portion of the profitable market. Luckily for NestlГ©, the company has been
around for decades and boasts a long history of quality products and consumer satisfaction, which
has allowed the company to obtain a considerable share of the market. It is demonstrated in
accelerated investment activity in the 2000 s which indicates long term commitment in markets
where Nestle operates, and construction of 16 factories from 1993 2006 in China to meet
consumer demand. As a result, new entrants into the industry must attempt to seize a portion of
NestlГ© s market share in order to survive. However, over the years, new entrants with healthier
alternatives have threatened the status quo in markets like Asia, Africa and the United States.
Economies of Scale Nestle enjoys massive economies of scale because of its size. Nestle has
increased production while maintaining low cost through fewer factories. This strategy has
positively contributed to Nestle working capital. This advantage of economies of scale is made
possible because of Nestle s unmatched number of factories around the world. The Swiss giants
owns 418 factories in 81 countries. This is how Nestle has effectively managed to localize

different. Some will say yes, it should still be taught. Others, will say no due to how much our
technology has grown, and which continues to grow by the day, But I strongly believe it should

The money market fulfils the borrowing and investment requirements of providers and users of

Commercial Paper
It is an unsecured, short term debt instrument issued by a corporation, typically for the financing of
accounts receivable, inventories and meeting short term liabilities. Maturities on commercial paper
is usually below one year. It s issued at a discount from face value and shows market interest rates.
It has collateral and so it is unsecured. It is usually issued by firms which have high credit rating.
India
It was introduced in India in 1990 and it is issued in the form of promissory note. It was introduced
in India with a view to enabling highly rated corporate borrowers to diversify their sources of short
term borrowings and to provide an additional instrument to investors (Singhania, Singh, Prajapat,
2016). Subsequently, primary dealers and all India financial institutions were also permitted to issue
CP to enable them to meet their short term funding requirements for their operations (Singhania,
Singh, Prajapat, 2016).
China
In an effort to promote the direct funding of corporations, improve the liquidity of the shortened
of the interest rate market and foster a more responsive pricing of credit risk, in May 2005 the
PBoC allowed non financial firms to issue commercial paper (CP) ( BRICs and Beyond , 2007).
At End September 2006, this segment of the market was already worth ($33bn, or 1.3% of GDP),
representing just over half of all non bank corporate interest bearing liabilities and nearly 5% of the
total market.

Imagery In Tasteless By David Sedaris
Imagery and details, diction, and humor are three of David Sedaris most important tools in his
writing. When reading a piece of his, those three things are what jumps out at you right away.
His use of detailed descriptions create vivid images in the readers mind. This helps to tell his
story in a clever and humorous way. In his article, Tasteless , he creates images relating to food
and his inability to taste or appreciate differences between foods. One of his first great uses of
imagery and detail comes when he compares himself to a convict and the way he eats. He first
compares himself to a shoveler and then goes on to say, It s how a prisoner might eat, one arm
maneuvering the fork and the other encircling the plate like a fence (Sedaris

America s National Language Should Be English
America is predominantly known for its music, food, diversity and its ongoing various languages.
Nearly eighty percent of America speaks English (Kasperowicz). The other twenty percent of the
population who do not speak English are mostly made up of immigrants. Because the United States
has an incredibly large amount of diverse languages, it unfortunately does not have a national
language. America s national language should be English. When immigrants and travelers come
into this country, they are aware that they will see and hear the English language, as it is
unavoidable. In my experience, I have concluded that it would be much simpler to have an official,
nationally common language that will be more recognized and simpler to accept. It isn t always
accepted because of the never ending debates about its value in our multicultural society. The
debates in our society often argue that we have at least 322 different languages, and they aren t
always easily translatable by the government. (US English).
The value that the English language has had on this country is significant in infinite ways. This
particular language defines our country as a whole. It unifies the people. America s fifty unique
states have a common value with this common language, and therefore, it will lastingly tie us all
together. Language could be described as to represent the national identity of a nation or country
and that it is enhanced as a language in common or community language (Brann).

Essay on Comparing the Heroes in The Dream of the Rood...
The Heroes in The Dream of the Rood and Beowulf
In The Dream of the Rood, the poet has added elements of the idealized heroic death (as
exemplified in Beowulf and The Battle of Maldon) to the crucifixion. He has also eliminated
details of the story that tend to render Christ as a figure of pathos, in order to further Christ s
identification with the other glorious warriors Anglo Saxon poems.
When a hero meets his death, for example, he is usually surrounded by faithful retainers (as is
Byrhtnoth) or at least one steadfast companion, such as Beowulf s Wiglaf. The gospel clearly states
that Jesus died ignobly, in the most humiliating fashion possible, and that his disciples kept
themselves from Golgotha ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How can a man die honorably without treasure?
The poet does not mention that Christ dies to fulfill a prophecy, one that is unavoidable and that
he therefore calmly accepts. The notion of letting fate do its work doesn t seem to be on any of
the other heroes agendas, either. Beowulf, for example, suspects that the dragon s laying waste to
his kingdom may indeed be divine punishment but that doesn t stop him from going to its barrow
and stabbing the creature in the belly. In fact, Beowulf clearly states It is a mystery where a
courageous man will meet his fated end. . . [ll. 3063 4] .
Interestingly, in Maldon, the ones on the battlefield who are described as fated to die are always
the Vikings, the barbarians. On page 57, a Viking warrior s death is recounted thus: The fated
warrior fell to earth. Whereas Byrhtnoth s sister s son chose death in battle, on the same page.
The delineation is clear: a hero dies in battle, by choice; others let fate roll over them. The
designation fated is never applied to the valorous.
A medieval hero always seeks his own death, if by his sacrifice his kinsmen will benefit. This is
why Beowulf willingly enters the den of his third and final monster: Now the edge of the sword,
hand and hard blade, must fight for treasure. [ll. 2508 9] Treasure means security for his people;
therefore he goes, refusing all help, because it is his duty to do well by his kingdom. The Rood
poet points out

The American Society Moves Forward Into The Contemporary Era
As the American society moves forward into the contemporary era, advertising grew from small
telecast into an argument and suggestion. It is utilized as a form of communication in order to
encourage, persuade, or manipulate a broad audience ( What is the Purpose ). A prominent example
could include advertisements on Television for universities and institutes such as University of
Phoenix and Grand Canyon University. These advertisements, explicitly targeting students, are
attempting to promote the idea of the American dream in the society, which is the notion of every
U.S. citizen having an equal opportunity to achieve wealth, success, and happiness through hard
work and perseverance by attending these particular schools. A majority of Americans perceive a
college education as the ticket to the American dream ( Student Loan Debt ). The interpretations
portrayed ,from these college advertisements, grants the observer a window into American beliefs
about the idea of the American dream in society and the false perceptions of it. A primary example
can be seen in Mantsios s Class in America 2009 article, where he talks about a common
misconception that the United States is a fundamentally classless society (Mantsios 624). The
advertisements claim that the American dream is obtainable by attending these particular schools
and getting an education because every person has an equal opportunity, however, that is not the
reality of it. The notion of the American dream is a myth

Adoption Is An Option That Is Not Discussed
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Per Steven Ertelt, adoption is an option that is not discussed nearly enough in the public debate
about choice. With adoption, everybody wins. The unaborted, adopted child gets the chance to
live, and a chance to live in a place with loving, caring people. The adoptive parents in return
benefit from having a child of their own. Studies even show that children who were born out of
wedlock but are raised by adoptive parents flourish in many categories. The adoptive children tend
to attain higher levels of education, higher self esteem, and even enjoy better health. Adoption is
also beneficial for the birth mother because she benefits from knowing she made the right
decision to give life. Despite adoptions advantages, it has fallen on hard times. Research shows
there has been a decrease in adoptions since the legalization of abortions in 1973. Before
abortions were legalized, 8.7 percent of children born out of wedlock were placed up for adoption,
and now statistics show that number to be around one percent. One matter of concern for the pro
life movement is that women facing crisis pregnancies often have false ideas about adoption.
Pregnant women think of adoption as the abandonment of their child, and see abortion as a much
easier alternative (Ertelt n.p.).
According to Kevin Mcgovern, for most of the twentieth century, adoption provided a pretty good
outcome when a girl or woman became pregnant and was unable to raise her child. In an era where

Thesis Of Bartleby The Scrivener
Bartleby, the Scrivener is a remarkable short story written by author Herman Melville. The
narrator of the story is a lawyer who owns his own law practice located on Wall Street and has
various scriveners who work for him. The first scrivener he describes is named Turkey. He is an
excellent worker in the morning, but as the day goes on his work begins to become messy and
sloppy. He also has an ill temper in the afternoon. The lawyer tries to have Turkey work only in
the morning, but of course Turkey argues with him so the lawyer just decides to give him less
import work in the afternoon. The second worker that the narrator describes is Nippers, is the
complete opposite from Turkey. He is a young and has an ambitious attitude. Although he has
trouble working in the morning, he is always on task and works best in the afternoon and evening
hours. The next employee is not a scrivenerbut he works as an errand boy. He is nicknamed Ginger
Nut due to the fact that Nippers and Turkey always send him to get ginger Nut cakes for them.
Lastly, the last employee The Lawyer describes is Bartleby. According to the Lawyer, Bartle is,
one of those beings of whom nothing is ascertainable, except from the original sources, and in his
case those are very small (Melville 1). To him, Bartleby is the most interesting scriveners of all
time. Bartleby joins the office after getting hired when he saw an ad placed by the Lawyer, which

The Components Of Social Conflict And Social Identity Theory
Tal classifies this mechanism as sociopsychological infrastructure. It manifests in collective
memory, the ethos of conflict and collective emotional orientation (p.1430). These are the
mechanism that distinguishes one group from another. Hence the collective memory, the ethos of
conflict and collective emotional orientation are what member of a group share, against the other .
A classic case of we against them. The question of how these operate from an individual s point of
view becomes imperative.
Social Identity Theory
Tajfel Turner, (1979) the proponents of social identitytheory helped in the understanding of
intergroup relations. Their focus was on the complex interweaving of an individual or interpersonal
behavior with contextual social processes of intergroup conflict (p.276). social identity theory,
therefore emphasizes intergroup relations (relationship of an individual has with his group and
between an outgroup) and categorical distinction (what sets an individual apart from another
outgroup) . Korostelina describes this as the processes of identification with other group members
(p.23). Personal identities are consequently reflected in an individual s social identity. For instance,
an individual with an Islamic conviction cannot be found in a church on a Sunday. Social identity
theory holds that individuals establish who they are and the group they belong, basically because
there is one form of similarity or another hence, by categorization,

Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder
Film Noir is a fairly self explanatory name. French for Dark or Black Film , this style (not genre)
of film is pretty much summed up in those two words. These films started being made in a 1940 s,
Post WWII paranoia, with the threat of nuclear missiles looming over the heads of all United States
citizens, Hollywood included. This paranoia led to disillusioned attitudes and existential feelings,
which in turn were reflected in Film Noirs through things such as characters, with the two most
prominent types being hardened male protagonists and femme fatales. Also, the Darkness of Film

When Joe leaves her mansion to try and show how he was his own person, she attempted

Near the end of the film, Joe comes to his senses once more and ends up getting shot by Norma
for it, because she believes that a celebrity is a star because nobody will abandon them, which Joe
had been trying to do. In short, Norma is an atypical, yet at the same time great example of a
Femme Fatale in Film Noir. Perhaps the biggest characteristic in Film Noir is the element that
gives it it s name: the visual style. Whether it be a detective story, a crime drama, or Sunset
Boulevard s dramatized look at behind the scenes Hollywood, film noirs are all shot in a very
distinct manner. The lighting is often single source, making heavy use of chiaroscuro, a high
contrast between light and dark, using things such as streetlights or venetian blinds to convey this
visual style. The environments are often portrayed as gritty streets, wet from rain and illuminated
primarily by streetlights, or claustrophobic looking rooms with amounts of smoke that would
trigger any working smoke alarm nowadays, depending on the location, to get across a pessimistic
attitude. Sunset Boulevard, despite it s name which could be interpreted as a pretty sight, definitely
shows a darker appearance of Hollywood. When Joe first sees Norma s mansion, he notices how

Literary Analysis of A White Heron
Literature Analysis Part 1 Throughout the history Fiction has been used by many writers to

message at the same time. On the other hand fact based articles are based on truth, research and
years of hard work but unfortunately most of the time they fail to capture the common reader
proving interesting to only subject area experts or environmentalists. A White Heron written in
1886 is about a girl who comes to her grandmother s house in the country side she falls in love
with the nature and after some time adjusts in the new surroundings. Being familiarized with the
surroundings, a hunter offers her a considerable reward for finding a Heron for his personal
collection. Being human she agrees to find the bird and accompanies the hunter but fails to find the
heron. Later on she goes alone and finds the bird s nest by climbing on the tallest tree, this in turn
reignites her love and passion for the nature and the thought of helping the hunter and killing of the
Heron becomes cynical. She keeps it a secret and Hunter goes back without his prize. (Jewett, 2009)

A Summary Of Elia Kazan And Arthur Miller
Elia Kazan and Arthur Miller were good friends for quite a long time. Miller and Kazan could
have made some of the best films and plays in the world but they let things come between them.
They worked on films and plays together. They had a professional and personal relationship,
however The Red Scare destroyed that. The threat of communism also broke them apart. Arthur
Miller was a playwright who wrote plays such as The Crucible and Death of a Salesman . Miller
was a kind man and wanted to keep his reputation to a high standard. He believed that theater
would change the world. His works were based off of his life, friends, and family. The way he
portrayed himself made people believe that he was a hero. Elia Kazanwas Miller s director on

not care who he betrayed. His films were personal and special to him. The turning point of his
career was when he appeared in front of the HUAC and named names. He said he took the

Taking Risks And Trying New Things
Taking risks and trying new things is a thrilling moment for me. I can usually pride myself on
being adventurous when it comes to trying new food. Either trying a type of cuisine foreign to
me or choosing a new restaurant, I can always say that I will try anything at least once. If it is a
dish in a restaurant I have never tried before, or something that a family member or friend made, I
always think that nothing is so appalling that one bite may kill me. It is an exciting time for me, as
I might find a new foodtype that I had never heard of before that will end up becoming a new
favorite.
Sushi restaurants have been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember. Japanese cuisine is
one of my favorites and I cherish every time I get to enjoy a meal at an authentic sushi restaurant.
I have always loved the varied aspects of Japanese cuisine, the fresh raw fish, the unique sushi
rolls, and the many enticing side dishes. I am always willing to try anything and never seem to
find a single dish at a sushi restaurant that I am not fond of. When I moved to Riverside, my family
began visiting this one all you can eat sushi restaurant. It was a great environment and an exciting

Analysis Of On Immunity An Inoculation By Eula Biss
In her book, On Immunity An Inoculation, Eula Biss takes the reader through the magical journey
of parenthood and the immense fear that comes with it. She provides insight into a pre and post
birth outlook on the world, specifically focusing on the controversial topic of vaccination. Her
optimism of the future and parenthood that she shares is quickly morphed into a world of germs
and fear when her son is born directly before the H1N1 pandemic of 2009. She is immediately
plunged into the world of vaccinationfear mothers discuss what chemicals are in the new vaccine
and weigh the risks vs benefits of attempting to give their children a small dose of immortality. This
introduces the books main theme of private vs. public , natural vs. unnatural ,... Show more content

Her constant use of tying metaphor to common perception allows the reader to dig deeper and
question their own and their communities psyche surrounding this subject. Biss is able to weave
together so many aspects of our society into a cohesive whole that explains the metaphor of
immunity vs. inoculation, self vs. nonself. For example, she is able to bring forward common
current controversial topics such as gender and racial equality and easily tie it into the main theme
of the book. For example: ...A 1912 definition of biological individuality as the quality of being
rendered non functional if cut in half, Donna Haraway observes that this requirement of
indivisibility is problematic for...women... Their personal, bounded individuality is compromised by
their bodies troubling talent for making other bodies... One of our functions, as women, is to be
divided (125 126). This unique perspective on a reason for sexism is related to back to the
misconception in our society that our bodies are independent of the environment around us. Thus,
substantiating the misinformed self vs. nonself idealogy.
Biss writes in depth on herd immunity, the concept that immunity and health/sickness of the
individual are dependent on the community. Thus, vaccination is an act done more for the health of
the community rather than the individual. Adversity toward vaccinations has always been balanced
between politics and ethics. People have historically resisted vaccination for the desire to remain
pure and/or govern their own body. This purity of the body, Biss suggests, stems from the wealthy
believing disease to only infect the dirty, the poor, the

Customs And Traditions Of Filipino Superstitions
Reflection
There are so many interesting Filipino superstitions or folk beliefs associated with New Year s
Eve and New Year s Day in the Philippines. Filipinos say you should observe the following
customs and traditions to ensure that the New Year being welcomed is a prosperous one. Many of
these superstitions bear a strong Chinese influence specially wearing Polka Dots cloths.
According to Filipino folklore, circles symbolize future good luck and riches. No matter what we
wear, though, New Yearsignifies a new beginning. Flipping open a fresh calendar, with its 12
pristine, as yet unmarked months, is perhaps one of the most universally hopeful acts we humans
perform: finally, a chance to shrug off a year s worth of worries, conflicts, and mistakes; finally, a
chance to start over.As quirky and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also popular practice to open all the doors and windows at the stroke of midnight to let in the
good luck. Many Filipino families also read the Christian bible and attend a church midnight mass.
It is common for many Filipinos to blend religion and superstition in celebrating New Year s Day.
If you want to bring in more wealth next year, wear clothes with polka dots or other circular
designs. The roundness of the circles is meant to resemble coins and prosperity.
In the other hand, most of the Filipinos say that we can wear whatever dress we want the most
important is we celebrate our year with new beginning with our family. Besides, we can welcome
our year without wearing these polka dots. Thanks giving and praising God in the midnight
because He gives another year for us to enjoy the give of life. Prosperity comes after who
sacrifices, through sacrifices and trusting God comes after success. Traditions, customs,
superstitions, and celebrations in New Year s Eve from around the world are currently in practice

Color In Ex Machina
Akhil John
Professor Scott
Humanities 200

Ex Machina: The role of Color The movie Ex Machina directed by Alex Garland portrayed what
true artificial intelligence would be like and how that would affect the human race. Garland s work
with Ex Machina painted a picture on what true Artificial Intelligence would be like, a self aware,
thinking, manipulative robot that have traits highly resembling human traits and character that
highly resembles human character. Garland uses color in very subtle ways to add to the complexity
of his masterpiece making his movie have deeper meaning. In the movie Garland uses color, in
order to convey the traditional expressions of each character and the plot as a whole. The use of
the color of t shirt a caleb is wearing at a certain point brings about the detail in his feelings and
the expression he has. For instance Caleb initially is seen to wear a blue and red t shirt. The
juxtaposition of red and blue which is seen throughout the film highlights to what extent a
character feels uncertain and anxious. This is evident as after Caleb has won the competition , he
is unsure how to feel and is nervous. As Caleb gets the job, he starts wearing a lot of blue toned ...

Essay on We Still Need Affirmative Action
During the 1950 s and 1960 s there were major changes in civil rights taking place within the United
States. In 1964 Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, which sought to create equal opportunity for
minority groups in the nation and eliminate discrimination. Shortly thereafter, the goal of the civil
rights movement shifted from the traditional aim of equality of opportunity through
nondiscrimination alone to affirmative actionto establish goals and timetables to achieve absolute
equality between blacks and whites (Dye 253). These goals and timetables were cemented with
Executive Order No. 11246, issued by President Lyndon B. Johnsonin 1965. This order is
commonly referred to as the foundation for modern day... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two centuries of severe racial oppression cannot be remedied by four decades of governmental
policy. Public opinion also seems to support the effectiveness of affirmative action policies. In a
1999 poll conducted by Newsweek, both African Americans and whites say [that] affirmative action
has improved conditions for blacks (Race: Bills and Proposals). The effectiveness of affirmative
action is also evident in employment demographics, as there have been significant gains over the
past 20 years in minority employment, even in traditionally segregated trades such as sheet metal
and electrical work (Race: Discussion Guides). Affirmative action programs have also played a
major role in education, providing new opportunities that were once denied to minorities. Perhaps
the most common argument against affirmative action comes from individuals who state that they
had nothing to do with the oppression and hardships that were inflicted on minorities (particularly
African Americans) in the past. However, these hardships were continued for years under our
government s rule, with very little action being taken. It is the responsibility of our government to
correct the injustices of the past and provide greater opportunities to future generations of the
sufferers. It is also the responsibility of the majority to recognize the past and support the efforts of
present and future programs, which may rid the nation of

by my parents with a great variety of pets . The animals and pets that the narrator speaks about are
symbolic for different drugs. The propensity to addiction was introduced to him as a tender child,
by his parents. Once a full blown addict, the narrator gets married to woman who is also an addict.

The Hazards of High Protein, Low Carbohydrate Diets Essay
The Hazards of High Protein, Low Carbohydrate Diets
A young, healthy teenage girl fell to her death after following a high protein, low carbohydrate
diet for no more than two weeks. The girl, having no identified sicknesses or medical conditions,
exhibited electrolyte imbalances along with minimal levels of potassium and calcium, which
appeared to be a result of the diet according to doctors at the University of Missouri Health Science
Center. These irregularities upset the normal electrical function of her heart causing it to stop and
her to collapse ( US teen . . . ). Based on this alone, it is evident that a high protein, low carbohydrate
diet is not a safe and healthy long term weight loss program.
High Protein diets are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
High protein or ketogenic diets, those like the well known Atkins, are based solely on large
consumptions of proteins and fats while they restrict carbohydrates to a nearly invisible amount.
Although dieters are eating plenty of meat and getting their protein, possibly even an overload,
they are receiving very little, if any, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other nutrient rich foods,
which are essential to a well balanced diet ( High Protein Diets ). A study conducted on Atkins
meals reveals that, along with having too much protein and too little carbohydrates, they are
unusually high in saturated fat and cholesterol while minimal in fiber. The meals also fail to meet
the recommended daily values for several vitamins and minerals ( How does . . .? ). Therefore,
with this type of diet, it is vital to one s health that vitamins and minerals are consumed by means of
supplements. There are some nutrients, though, that cannot be acquired any other way than directly
from the source ( The Dangers . . . ). According to Ellen Coleman s article, Even Dr. Atkins . . .
admits that his diet doesn t supply enough vitamin [sic] and minerals and recommends that people
take supplements.
Due to the imbalance of protein and carbohydrates, many serious side effects are linked to the
weight loss plan. Ketosis, a fasting state, is very common among high protein dieters ( The
Dangers . . . ). The body lacks its

Essay On Alcatraz The Alcatraz federal prison, located on the San Francisco island of the same name, was dubbed escape proof during its years of operation from 1934 1963 and was designed to hold the worst criminals in America (Timeline: Alcatraz Escape Attempts). During its 29 years, Alcatraz held most prisoners without incident, but there were still 14 escape attempts (Timeline...Attempts). June 11, 1962 marks one of the most sensationalized attempts by Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin(The Great Escape from Alcatraz). Although officials said the inmates drowned, many claim they escaped and lived as fugitives (The...Alcatraz). For example, a 1962 San Francisco Chronicle article Con s Daring Swim Kills The Myth argued John Paul Scott s swim from Alcatraz Island to Fort Point destroyed...the official position that escape from the Federal Prison is impossible (p. 1). The publication used Scott s case to apply it to that of Morris and the Anglins, arguing that if Scott could swim across the bay and survive, then Morris and the Anglins could, too. All the information is credible because it comes from a local, primary source, The San Francisco Chronicle. However, the source is not relevant because Scott s attempt was in December, not June like Morris and the Anglins, and this change in time would affect weather conditions between cases (The...Alcatraz). Additionally, San Francisco police apprehended Scott once he reached Fort Point, so he did not fit under our group s definition of a successful escape (10 Things You May Not Know About Alcatraz). To find the influence of geochemical processes of As mobilization in groundwater of the study area, the correlation matrix among As and various physio chemical parameter are given in Table 4. Pearson correlation matrices show that various physio chemical parameters pairs of groundwatersamples have a significant positive correlations such as TDS EC (r = 1.000), TDS Na (r = 0.587), TDS Ca (r = 0.624), EC Na (r = 0.617), EC Ca (r = 0.618), Na Ca (r = 0.564), and K Mn (r = 0.566) respectively. Similarly some pairs have also shown significant negative correlation such as Mg2+ HCO3 (r = 0.590), well depth Mn (r = 0.518). The concentration of As in groundwater has insignificantly negative correlated to Fe (r= 0.260), Cl (r= 0.081) and SO42 (r= 0.062), while As has insignificantly positive correlated to Mn (r=0.185), NO3 ( r=0.111), HCO3 (r=1777), pH (r=0.226), Na+ (r=0.223), K+ (r=0.227), Ca2+ (r=0.262) and Mg2+ (r=0.199). In this study, an insignificant positive correlation between As and Mn has observed, while an insignificant negative correlation between As and Fe has existed in groundwater aquifer (Table 4). • 5. Short Essay About The Aztecs The Aztecs were a complex civilization, I don t know much about the Aztec Civilization, I only know the outline. The reason why I chose the Aztecs is because I played a few video games growing up playing as that civilization, and they have always made me more interested in them. What I know, is eventually they came upon a spot with an eagle sitting on a cactus with a serpent wrapped in it s legs, that s where Tenochtitlan would be built. Montezuma was their leader, he was fierce and strict, but at the same time kind hearted and understanding, but nobody mistook his kindness for weakness, except for the Spanish. The Aztecs would fight enemies and enslave the rebellions and sacrifice them. The ones that cooperated, would have to pay tributes every few weeks though. Those people could live a normal life, just under Azteccontrol. They built things called skyfarms. Those farms were very well designed and worked in the desert setting they lived in. The Aztecs... Did they ever skip a day and know the sun rises the next day? Or did they never find out? What I want to know the most though, is how their leader Montezuma allowed the Spanish in with open arms, and let them harass him and his economy, and he let it happen, was he brainwashed into thinking the Spanish were the new leaders? The last thing I would like to know about is the rise and fall of the empire, where did they get all of their resources to build those spectacular buildings? • 7. Modern Theatre Vs Greek Theatre A Synopsis and comparison of Ancient Greek theater to present times Greece was the first culture to significantly raise the standards not only for philosophical ideals, mathematical methods astronomical allegories, architectural influence, medical techniques, and much more, but also ultimately, the most substantial contribution they charted was theater pioneering. What was considered theatre back in ancient times is completely unrecognizable to what we are used to theater nowadays. Back in the Hellenistic period, 500 to 200 B.C., theatre served a completely different purpose than it does today; it solely dealt with honoring their Dodekatheon gods rather than entertaining the crowd and provoking thought. Arguably the theatre was the most important part of the Athenian religious and social culture where everyone who worked extremely hard throughout the year would look forward to the month that was dedicated to their most beloved god, Dionysus. Imagine living in 550 B.C., celebrating life for an entire month without having any obligations towards anyone. Dionysus was the Greek god of grape harvest, and wine, who served as a symbol of pleasure and ecstasy within Greek culture (Wickham 31). The logic behind that is that every one of the twelve gods would be celebrated for a month. One might ask, how did they keep track of it? Valid question, but it really stems from the extremely sophisticated technology and mathematics. One of the instruments they used was the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Dr. David Burns s The Feeling Good Handbook Is your thought life making you ill? Mental health experts argee that it can. In fact, some ideas can ruin you life. Psychiatrist and educator, Dr. Aaron Temkin Beck (the father of Cognitive Emotive Therapy), first proposed that false ideas could actually damage mental health. Dr. David Burns popularized this notion in his book, The Feeling Good Handbook: Techniques and Exercises to Help Cope with Depression without Drugs, a classic work in the field of mental health. Though developed by Temkin in the 1960s, Cognitive Emotive Therapyhas only grown in influence within the mental health field during the past half century. Its therapies have become common tools in the clinical treatment of depression and have been used by clinicians to address criminal behavior. The first article in this issue of Watchmen, Assumption Busting, explores how faulty assumptions can make our problem solving ineffective. Cognitive Emotive Therapy makes a broader claim. Mistaken ideas can actually ruin our lives and health with bad decisions. Put another way, faulty (or irrational) thinking makes us ill, but rational thinking restores our mental health and social balance. According to Cognitive Therapy, our reasoningcan fall into typical irrational traps. These traps are automatic ways in which we have trained ourselves to misinterpret our experience. As a result, we base our actions on faulty ideas that lead to bad choices. The thinking traps listed below are among those Dr. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Boeing Legal Impact Analysis Boeing Essay To: Head of Legal Analytics Department From: William Locklier Date: April 25, 2015 Subject: Boeing Legal Impact Analysis Boeing: An Overview Boeing is the largest aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial and military aircraft in the world. Boeing s military aircraft come equipped with missiles, satellite, launch vehicles and advanced information and communication systems. Boeing is also the number one U.S. exporter when it comes to sales. Boeing s aircraft are flown each and every day, all across the United States and the world. Because their products are used so heavily, and daily for that matter, product liability is a major concern for Boeing. The fact that their products interact directly with the men and women who fly these planes, and that nearly every flight has an average of 200 or more people on board, these products need to be safe and thoroughly tested. On that note, health and safety is another major area of legal concern for Boeing. If a fatal accident were to occur, wrongful death cases are sure to come up if the manufacturer is found at fault. These cases can cost the company upwards of 100 million dollars in revenue, not to mention the bad publicity that is derived from them as well. One must take into account that the amount of fatal accidents that occur where the manufacturer is at fault is on the decline, with only 20 percent of fatal accidents occurring due to a mechanical failure of some sort, where as pilot error attributes ... • 11. The Issue Of Child Marriage Essay Child marriage is one of the hardest things a teenage child could face. It is basically a violation of children s human rights. It is strictly prohibited by international law. Early marriage takes away the girls right to make important decisions about their sexual health and well being. Historically, patriarchal societies have marginalized women in various aspects across the world. Women disenfranchisement, in this way, is not a new phenomenon. However, with the passage of time women have been able to claim their rights and are seen at par with men in many developed societies. But the misfortune still persists in many parts of the world. Many societies still fail to see woman as fully human and fail to appreciate their role in the building of society. As a result, women are still subject to grave injustice in many societies and such societies also suffer from underdevelopment for minimal role of women in their development. Nepal is a country where women suffer from the issue of Child or Early Marriages . This is a century s long practice in Nepal and unfortunately nothing significant has appeared in form of tangible indicators that indicate the improvement in this grave scenario. International community and NGOs are working on this issue of Nepal as their priority but unfortunately with little success. Nepal government has also been brought in line on this and it has committed to ensure elimination of this devastating practice by 2030 BS. With its universal consequences, ... • 12. The Definition Of Obscenity And Obscenity Laws Constructed... Obscenity revolves around what constitutes pornography and sexually explicit material to be protected by the First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and press as stated in the Constitution. I want to look at the language and definitions of obscenity created by the Supreme Court and interrupt their effects on society. In this essay, I want to argue that the creation of the definition of obscenityand obscenity laws constructed from community standards can be harmful to society because they can be interrupted in many different ways. First, I would like to define terms of what obscenity means and the differences between obscenity, vulgarity, and profanity. Obscenity, as defined by the Supreme Court case of Miller v. California, believed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a legal context, obscenity describes expressions that are typically sexual or crude references to the body or bodily functions that offend the sexual morality of a given time and place. Even though, this creates a gray are between something considered profane or vulgar language and/or behavior and obscenity because profanity and vulgarity can offend the sexual morality as well. Nonetheless, the First Amendment of the Constitution does not protect behavior, actions, or language seen specifically as obscene. Next, I would like to explore at what point or context does something turn from being considered profane and/or vulgar into being considered obscene and therefore, against the law. In Roth v. US, the court held that obscenity was not within the area of constitutionally protected speech or press . The Supreme Court made it clear in the ruling that the First Amendment did not protect every behavior, action, or expression, such as materials that were utterly without redeeming social importance . The Supreme Court believed the definition of obscenity as stated in the above paragraph gave a fair warning to the public and satisfied the demands of the Due Process clause in the Fourteenth Amendment. • 13. Descriptive Essay On My Winter Trip There s nothing better than streaming down a mountain filled with snow, ski tips pointed straight, and reaching a maximum velocity. For me, an annual ski trip in the mountains is an irreplaceable event. The only problem with these trips is living in Kansas. At best, I must travel 8 tedious hours by car to the West to obtain my ideal vacation. And the return tripis even worse because the fun is over, your body and patience is exhausted, and you understand the long week of catching up on to do lists that will follow. Most often, the excitement of the trip far outweighs the tedious trip home, but in January of 2013, I might have been convinced otherwise as my trip home was filled with speeding tickets, car problems, cramped spaces, and almost six extra hours of travel. As my groups last day of skiing at Wolf Creek Ski Resort came to an end, we went to bed in good time in hopes of leaving very early the next morning for an equally early return to Newton. As the driver, I was diligently driving through the twisting and turning mountains with a purpose. For those who have driven in the mountains before, you are well aware of the difficulties of maintaining a constant speedthrough steep grades of terrain. And sure enough, almost 2 hours into our trip home, I see a highway patrolmanmake a U Turn, flip on his lights, and I found myself pulling over my car. • 14. Prince Myshkin Essay Concepts such as compassion, thoughtfulness, and empathy are what people all over the world would seemingly strive for. Often, however, these benevolent ideas of the way society should be, are muddled and manipulated by the reality of the way society actually is. Prince Myshkin, a Russian man who represents the essence of kindness and morality, is thrown into the high society of Petersburg, a society that is obsessed with money, power and reputation. In his selfless attempts to save his companions from their destructive evil , Prince Myshkin is in turn transformed and distorted by a superficial and empty society. The title of the book, The Idiot, fits well with Prince Myshkin s attitude towards human nature and also does well to highlight his status as an outcast; however The Idealist is a title that would better suit the Prince s thoughtprocess and actions. Returning from Switzerland, Prince Myshkin acquaints himself with his distant relations, the Epanchins and finds himself in a vain and greedy society. Despite numerous warnings... Since he is isolated and considered an idiot, the contrast between Myshkin s character and the society is emphasized. In this war the role of the intelligence agencies has been crucial and the human rights community has not even begun to document and expose their role in spreading disinformation; they have penetrated into peoples movements, human rights groups and even Muslim organisations; the problem is further complicated by the fact that Indian intelligence agencies are now working closely with both US and Israeli intelligence ... Subject to the explicit and latent biases of a racist society, the black population of Sonny s Blues attempt to endure oppression and suffering and survive in an unforgiving land. The darkness in Sonny s Blues is the metaphorical embodiment of their suffering and the eventual culmination of that suffering: death. The narrator was afraid of his destiny, afraid of the brutal reality awaiting him, afraid of the finality of death. Deception In Much Ado About Nothing William Shakespeare s comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, features a wide cast of characters and follows a variety of plotlines that deal with love, loss, deception, and redemption. Within the scenes of the play, the old adage you don t know what you have got until you lose it is clearly applicable, especially in the case of Hero and Claudio s lovestory, but this sentiment could surely be changed to you don t know who you are until you lose it . • 19. Modern Technology and It s Effects Essay Argumentative essay In our present society, people cannot deny that the changes in this world have been tied to the advancement of the technology. It has evolved with this society so deeply where such conveniences are no longer luxuries but rather necessities. Unfortunately, the most affected group of people from the developed technology is the younger age people (Subrahmanyam, 2000). In the past, children were more lively and active: playing outdoors, running around, climbing trees and remaining active rather than watching television and playing video game and computer. This gives grandparents the option to offer child care when needed; like when both mom and dad work. Living close to relatives also makes it easy to visit one another often. Luckily for NestlГ©, the company has been around for decades and boasts a long history of quality products and consumer satisfaction, which has allowed the company to obtain a considerable share of the market. It is demonstrated in accelerated investment activity in the 2000 s which indicates long term commitment in markets where Nestle operates, and construction of 16 factories from 1993 2006 in China to meet consumer demand. Nearly eighty percent of America speaks English (Kasperowicz). The other twenty percent of the population who do not speak English are mostly made up of immigrants. Because the United States has an incredibly large amount of diverse languages, it unfortunately does not have a national language. America s national language should be English. When immigrants and travelers come into this country, they are aware that they will see and hear the English language, as it is unavoidable. In my experience, I have concluded that it would be much simpler to have an official, nationally common language that will be more recognized and simpler to accept. It isn t always accepted because of the never ending debates about its value in our multicultural society. The debates in our society often argue that we have at least 322 different languages, and they aren t always easily translatable by the government. (US English). The Heroes in The Dream of the Rood and Beowulf In The Dream of the Rood, the poet has added elements of the idealized heroic death (as exemplified in Beowulf and The Battle of Maldon) to the crucifixion. He has also eliminated details of the story that tend to render Christ as a figure of pathos, in order to further Christ s identification with the other glorious warriors Anglo Saxon poems. When a hero meets his death, for example, he is usually surrounded by faithful retainers (as is Byrhtnoth) or at least one steadfast companion, such as Beowulf s Wiglaf. How can a man die honorably without treasure? The poet does not mention that Christ dies to fulfill a prophecy, one that is unavoidable and that he therefore calmly accepts. The notion of letting fate do its work doesn t seem to be on any of the other heroes agendas, either. Beowulf, for example, suspects that the dragon s laying waste to his kingdom may indeed be divine punishment but that doesn t stop him from going to its barrow and stabbing the creature in the belly. In fact, Beowulf clearly states It is a mystery where a courageous man will meet his fated end. . . [ll. 3063 4] . Interestingly, in Maldon, the ones on the battlefield who are described as fated to die are always the Vikings, the barbarians. On page 57, a Viking warrior s death is recounted thus: The fated warrior fell to earth. Whereas Byrhtnoth s sister s son chose death in battle, on the same page. The delineation is clear: a hero dies in battle, by choice; others let fate roll over them. The designation fated is never applied to the valorous. A medieval hero always seeks his own death, if by his sacrifice his kinsmen will benefit. This is why Beowulf willingly enters the den of his third and final monster: Now the edge of the sword, hand and hard blade, must fight for treasure. [ll. 2508 9] Treasure means security for his people; therefore he goes, refusing all help, because it is his duty to do well by his kingdom. The Rood poet points out ... • 34. Adoption Is An Option That Is Not Discussed REVIEW OF LITERATURE Per Steven Ertelt, adoption is an option that is not discussed nearly enough in the public debate about choice. With adoption, everybody wins. The unaborted, adopted child gets the chance to live, and a chance to live in a place with loving, caring people. The adoptive parents in return benefit from having a child of their own. Studies even show that children who were born out of wedlock but are raised by adoptive parents flourish in many categories. The adoptive children tend to attain higher levels of education, higher self esteem, and even enjoy better health. Adoption is also beneficial for the birth mother because she benefits from knowing she made the right decision to give life. Despite adoptions advantages, it has fallen on hard times. Research shows there has been a decrease in adoptions since the legalization of abortions in 1973. Before abortions were legalized, 8.7 percent of children born out of wedlock were placed up for adoption, and now statistics show that number to be around one percent. One matter of concern for the pro life movement is that women facing crisis pregnancies often have false ideas about adoption. Pregnant women think of adoption as the abandonment of their child, and see abortion as a much easier alternative (Ertelt n.p.). According to Kevin Mcgovern, for most of the twentieth century, adoption provided a pretty good outcome when a girl or woman became pregnant and was unable to raise her child. In an era where ... • 36. The Components Of Social Conflict And Social Identity Theory Tal classifies this mechanism as sociopsychological infrastructure. It manifests in collective memory, the ethos of conflict and collective emotional orientation (p.1430). These are the mechanism that distinguishes one group from another. Hence the collective memory, the ethos of conflict and collective emotional orientation are what member of a group share, against the other . A classic case of we against them. The question of how these operate from an individual s point of view becomes imperative. Social Identity Theory Tajfel Turner, (1979) the proponents of social identitytheory helped in the understanding of intergroup relations. Their focus was on the complex interweaving of an individual or interpersonal behavior with contextual social processes of intergroup conflict (p.276). social identity theory, therefore emphasizes intergroup relations (relationship of an individual has with his group and between an outgroup) and categorical distinction (what sets an individual apart from another outgroup) . Korostelina describes this as the processes of identification with other group members (p.23). Personal identities are consequently reflected in an individual s social identity. • 41. Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder Film Noir is a fairly self explanatory name. French for Dark or Black Film , this style (not genre) of film is pretty much summed up in those two words. These films started being made in a 1940 s, Post WWII paranoia, with the threat of nuclear missiles looming over the heads of all United States citizens, Hollywood included. This paranoia led to disillusioned attitudes and existential feelings, which in turn were reflected in Film Noirs through things such as characters, with the two most prominent types being hardened male protagonists and femme fatales. Also, the Darkness of Film Noirs was not just a metaphor for the content of the film, but also a fairly literal description of the visual style was like. Taking influence from... When Joe leaves her mansion to try and show how he was his own person, she attempted suicide, which made him come back to her and get tangled up in her web of control once more. Near the end of the film, Joe comes to his senses once more and ends up getting shot by Norma for it, because she believes that a celebrity is a star because nobody will abandon them, which Joe had been trying to do. In short, Norma is an atypical, yet at the same time great example of a Femme Fatale in Film Noir. Perhaps the biggest characteristic in Film Noir is the element that gives it it s name: the visual style. Whether it be a detective story, a crime drama, or Sunset Boulevard s dramatized look at behind the scenes Hollywood, film noirs are all shot in a very distinct manner. The lighting is often single source, making heavy use of chiaroscuro, a high contrast between light and dark, using things such as streetlights or venetian blinds to convey this visual style. The environments are often portrayed as gritty streets, wet from rain and illuminated primarily by streetlights, or claustrophobic looking rooms with amounts of smoke that would trigger any working smoke alarm nowadays, depending on the location, to get across a pessimistic attitude. Sunset Boulevard, despite it s name which could be interpreted as a pretty sight, definitely shows a darker appearance of Hollywood. When Joe first sees Norma s mansion, he notices how ... The effectiveness of affirmative action is also evident in employment demographics, as there have been significant gains over the past 20 years in minority employment, even in traditionally segregated trades such as sheet metal and electrical work (Race: Discussion Guides).
