On March 25, 1911 in the New York City s West village 146 people mainly young women
immigrants of Italian and Jewish background perished. The women, some just teenagers would
work long hours in the factory sewing shirtwaist high necked cottons blouses which were the
fashion staple of the time for young women. The owners of the Triangle Shirt waist factory
would lock the doors while the women worked, said to prevent theft and the visit of union reps
to the location. What lead to the fire was the unsanitary factory floor. This was the exact reason
to why before the actual fire, 400 of the factories employees went on strike. During this strike the
women fought for better wages and safer working conditions. Unfortunately they only won some
of their concessions on pay, but little was actually done by the factories owner who continued to
keep the workplace in shambles. As well as the doors still locked. Besides the doors being
locked there were piles of flammable fabric scraps, over flowed waste baskets and many of
workers crammed in multiple floors of the building. In 1977 the fire was ignited by what was
said to be a match or cigarette tossed carelessly amid the debris on the eighth floor. The fire
quickly spread through the open factory floors above. The actual shirtwaist building was fire
proof and still stands today. Located in the West village at the corner of Greene Street and
Washington Place one could still pay the original building a visit. Those on the 10th floor

Reflection Of The Journal Of Active Listening With My Parents
Active Listening Journal I have been evaluating conversations I have had over the past few days
to find good candidates to record in this journal. The first conversation which has been relevant to
write about is one that I had on FaceTime with my parents. We had the opportunity to talk for
almost half an hour on Sunday afternoon. We talked about many different things, including how
our days were, what the weather is like back home and up here, how my brothers are doing, how
our dogs are doing, and other random things that popped into our minds as we just enjoyed talking
to one another. I have taken it upon myself to call them every night, even if it is just to talk for a
few minutes. During this particular conversation, I noticed two things that I did particularly well
while practicing active listening with my parents. First off, I noticed that I reflected very well in the
conversation. One example stands out among the others, my dad was telling of how he had
experienced trouble with one of our tractors earlier that day. To reflect on that topic, I
commented It sounds to me like that break is going to end up being quite a costly malfunction!
Along with reflection, I also noticed that I sufficiently used the component of sharing. While
having a conversation with mom about one of our dogs, I respectfully shared my own view on
the decision of whether or not to breed her, even though it differed from her and dad s. They
were actually impressed by the argument I put forward and we now are going to have two litters
of puppies instead of just one! By effectively using these attributes of an active listener, I feel that
my conversation with my parents was greatly enhanced compared to some of the past times we
have talked. I also noticed a couple of active listener traits that needed improvement. Surprisingly, I
was not paying full attention to my parents during part of the call. I was Face Timing them on my
computer while trying to multitask and complete a survey for another class at the same time during
our conversation. I became so invested in the survey that my dad actually stopped talking to regain

influxes of people to this country. In spite of this and the and unique problems of immigrant
children, immigration law and procedure is as absent of a child centered structure as our history is.
History and law pay little attention to the immigrant child s voice and future. An unique exception
of this is that many unaccompanied migrant children in the U.S. can gain permanent residency
through a Special Immigrant Juvenile visa. This is the only child centered form of immigration
relief in existence in our country. Created in 1990, SIJ status allows petitioners who have been
abused, neglected, or abandoned to obtain permanent residence. This status is achieved

Since the beginning of civilization one of the most consistent methods in creating change has been
through violence. This violence can range anywhere from tribal warfare to world war or even to
modern violent protests. Although casualties are an expected result of deadly conflict, violence
takes on a new angle when it is performed through genocide. In only four months the casualties of
the genocide in Rwandain 1994 surpassed the casualties of the American Civil War, which lasted
four years. With estimates between 800,000 to above one million casualties, Rwanda experienced
one of the quickest attempted exterminations of an ethnic group in world history, tied closely with
the Armenian genocide that lasted from 1915 to 1916.

The delayed and half hearted attempt at a thesis is not a good feature of an argument according
to the academic discourse community. The second error that Cave makes is that he looses his
voice in the paper as a whole. Short though it is, Cave still manages to stuff no less than eleven
sources in his article. While a wide variety and scope of outside sources in not intrinsically bad,
on the contrary it usually is desirable, summarizing the sources rather than having them back up
his own ideas is where Cave goes wrong. There are 21 paragraphs total in Cave s article, only 5
of which contain his own voice. At a scanty 24% appearance rate, the academic discourse
community would be sure to note the lack of the author s voice. Both the tardy, weak thesis and
