Editor's Notes
Your role in Hiring the Best
Actively networking and engaging with social media aren’t entire strategies, they are key and prominent channels that we must master, but to #HiretheBest you will need to Maximise all your channels – this starts by optimising your partnership with TA. Sourcing and hiring great talent is everyone’s role and responsibility – it is not only the role of your recruiter. In this session you should walk away with a greater understanding of the signature capabilities of your Talent Acquisition organisation and how you can optimise your partnership to plan and execute differentiated strategies. You can’t expect to #HiretheBest if you wait until it is time to hire before engaging with Talent Acquisition.

Other mistakes
Not clearly focused on the target role
Mass email mailshots of CV
Too longwinded with irrelevant content
Not enough detail on skills acquired
Poor layout / cramped / small typeface
Lots of long paragraphs instead of bullets
Not thinking about who will read it
In other words, it is like a life long process through which a persons work identity is formed
Career development is influenced by several factors
Motivations and values-Think about what is important to you, what are your values and motivations and the factors that influence your motivations, we want a career that is rewarding, what are your goals and then look for opportunities.
Personality-Deciding on a career that suits your interests should always be a top consideration. You probably wont do well on your career track if you are working in a field that doesn’t interest you.
Business Trends- Emerging trends! What's hot right now? Social Media, computers IT, green occupations that focus on environmental issues
Choosing a career is a huge responsibility, both for men and women. It's almost impossible to pick the career you will remain in on the first try. So don't think you'll be the exception.
The idea of a clearly defined career path and job for life is outdated. Change is now the only certainty in life and the challenge is to manage this constant change.
it is crucial that you first identify your INTERESTS, VALUES, SKILLS and PERSONALITY PREFERENCES in order to make a well–informed decision.
Match your goals, needs, value, personality
You may think the sole point of work is to bring home enough money to live comfortably. While sufficient compensation is important in any job, it’s not the whole story. If you are unsatisfied with what you do every day, it takes a toll on your physical and mental health.
Desired Location-What’s your preferred work location? Do you prefer a corporate headquarters type location? Perhaps you like a small regional office or a home office local? Are you the type of person that likes to work from an airport hotel? How often do like to work away from home? Do you mind traveling for your job? If living out of a suitcase makes you cringe and you need a consistency in your workplace, avoid careers that require a lot of moving around. Make sure you consider all of this when selecting the best career for you.
Future Prospects -Modern careers rarely proceed in straight lines. Location-How much do you value a short commute each day? Is it important that everyday you are home for dinner? Do you live for weekends? If you need these comforts on a regular basis, pick a career that will give you the time to enjoy them. Look for jobs with regular hours and little to no requirements to work overtime or on weekends, or to travel.
It’s easy when you know or think you know what you want to do something (personally mine was in business and money )
Developed a broad skill base
My interest and skills have changed and evolved
My role within the Central Bank
Regulatory Supervisor- The objective is to minimise the risk of failure by ensuring compliance. We focus on a risk based approach. The overall objective is to protect customers. There are many promotion opportunities available
Interview controlling positions in financial institutions- managers and board directors
Planned happenstance
Planned Happenstance is not just luck or being in the right place at the right time. It is a conscious, purposeful, and on-going process that will help you to build a more satisfying and fulfilling career –Krumboltz Theory. Krumboltz says indecision is desirable and sensible as it allows the opportunity to benefit form unplanned events
Don’t get caught up in the “every move must be a one up” . Look at the experience and what it will add to you as a person. Don’t be afraid to go backwards or sideways for periods of time. You will be working until retirement. In the scheme of things a year here and there invested in yourself will not matter.
We spend almost 40 years on our work, 80,000 hours….we work
Colleagues told me I was taking a step back. Not working directly in my field of training. But taking this position gave me an entirely experience, work qualification and a different perspective.
Step 1-Discover yourself. What are your interests, values, skills, personality preferences and strengths?? Evaluate Your Work Style
The right career for you will be suited to your work style. Are you a self-starter who accomplishes goals on your own, or do you need the discipline of a structured work environment to do your best
Step 2-What information or individuals can help me to explore my career options. 15-minute informational interview with someone who has a job you think you want can help cement your career choice. Many people will be happy to meet briefly with you to talk about the pros and cons of what they do and tell you whether they would make the same career choice if they could turn back time and choose differently
Step 3-How can I learn more about job shadowing, exploratory internships to gain firsthand experiences. Real-life experience in the work environment where you think you want to work can help you make up your mind for certain. Job shadows, internships and temporary assignments give you a realistic view of a day in the life of a profession
Step 4- How much time and energy am I willing to invest to make a career decision, what are my top priorities for this decision
Be patient!! Finding the right career is a process, not an event. An entry level position in your field may not be your dream job, but it can give you a foothold on the career ladder you want to climb. It takes time to develop your career, but setting goals and following a plan to achieve them can help you fulfill your career aspirations.
Attitude counts - Have an open and positive attitude from the beginning, stay calm and don’t be nervous (interviewers are normal people who get nervous too)
Express confidence -looking professional and yet as natural as possible. Even if you’re not feeling confident, make sure you act confident
Women
As a rule ,men tend to be more confident in their abilities than woman, even though we are just as capable.. You must try to be aware of this and learn to back yourself more.
Woman need to me more assertive in putting themselves forward for further development and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones.
For promotion interviews-Don’t be hoping people will guess or just know what your career ambitions are. Our male colleagues are much better at doing this
Do your homework-Preparation, Get as much information as possible on the company - read all the latest news about the company, check out the web site and try to speak with someone who has worked there or is familiar with the company.
Here are just a few things that you should always know about any company that you want to work for:
1. What products or services does the company do?
2. Who are their competitors?
3. Do they have a Mission/Vision statement?
4. What are the strategic goals, projects or new developments?
5. Are they publicy or privately owned? If public, research the stock to see how the company has been doing long-term and short-term.
6. Make contact through LinkedIn with someone who works for the company. This may give you great insight into less then public information regarding the company.
7.Take a good look at your resume and experience to see how you can benefit the company if they hire you. Use that as a selling point during the interview.
8. Bring the research with you to the interview. The hiring manager will see that you have done your homework.
Know your cv like the back of your hand
answer the actual questions asked. Understanding what the employer is looking for is the key to answering interview questions well. Print the job description and underline or highlight the skills and tasks that are mentioned. I’ve had people come to interviews so overly prepared with memorised answers even if it’s not exactly what was asked
Would you fit in with our company and culture-How can you be valuable to me and this organization? There isn’t too much you can do about this. It’s just something interviewers look for and think about during an interview. Even if you give the best interview ever, they may know something about the job or company that you don’t – and they may be saving you both a bad experience.
Are you adaptable / flexible-If you prepare your jobs experience stories well – things you’ve managed to improve or solve or help get done
Would I like to work with you on a daily basis?-Of all the things an interviewer looks to answer – once we get past “can you do the job” – this may be the most important one of all. Are you a positive addition to the workplace? Can you carry your fair share of the load? Do play well with others? Will you pitch in when needed without grousing? Will you be someone I can trust and rely on?
Prepare to make a case for the match Know your strengths and summarise how they can add value. Select those that demonstrate the transferable skills related to the qualifications being sought. Examples that demonstrate several skills are best
