Overview
• What do funders expect?
• How to write a DMP?
• What can DMP Online offer?

3. … because good research needs good data
Funders have DMP requirements

4. … because good research needs good data
Funders are looking for:
• A brief plan submitted in grant applications, and in the case
of NERC, a more detailed plan once funded
• 1-2 sides of A4 as an attachment or a section in Je-S form
• Typically a prose statement covering suggested themes
• Outline DM & sharing plans, justify decisions and limitations
DCC London Roadshow, 21-22 May 2012, #dccLondon
5. … because good research needs good data
They all ask for slightly different things…

DCC London Roadshow, 21-22 May 2012, #dccLondon
6. … because good research needs good data
…but there are common themes
1. Description of data to be collected / created
(i.e. content, type, format, volume...)
4. Standards / methodologies for data collection & management
• Ethics and Intellectual Property
(highlight any restrictions on data sharing e.g. embargoes, confidentiality)
9. Plans for data sharing and access
(i.e. how, when, to whom)
12. Strategy for long-term preservation
DCC London Roadshow, 21-22 May 2012, #dccLondon
7. … because good research needs good data
Ultimately funders expect:
• timely release of data
- once patents are filed or on (acceptance for) publication
• open data sharing
- minimal or no restrictions if possible
• preservation of data
- typically 5-10+ years if of long-term value

Pointers to get started
• Encourage consultation and collaboration
• Base plans on available skills & support
• Make sure implementation is feasible
• Justify the decisions

What is DMP Online?
A web-based tool to help researchers write plans
It features:
• Templates based on different requirements
• Tailored guidance (disciplinary, funder etc)
• Customised exports to a variety of formats
• Ability to share DMPs with others

Exercise: supporting DMPs
Read the short case studies.
Discuss the merits of each approach in groups:
• Which approach do you favour?
• What is feasible to implement at your institution?
• Is there any other support that you would provide?

Editor's Notes
Several of the main UK research funders have requirements relating to data management planning in their data policies
Funders typically ask for a short (1-2 page) plan submitted in grant applications They suggest themes to be covered and generally want a short statement that covers these as appropriate to the proposed research
Funder requirements are all expressed differently Each asks a different combination of questions and the emphasis varies (biomedical funders for example focus on data sharing).
These are five common themes asked by most funders.
Data management plans are a way to check compliance with funders’ data policies and the driver behind these is open access. DMPs should reassure funders that data will be released asap, shared openly where possible and preserved if of long-term value
- Data management is a team effort, so encourage consultation between researchers and support services to develop an appropriate plan - Make sure researchers are aware of available support and know what can be written in - Plans need to be realistic or they could weaken the research proposal - Always explain why choices have been made
I recommend this ICPSR resource It explains the importance of different questions as a pointer to how to answer Examples are given. This is the most frequent request we get at DCC - examples help researchers think of what to write for their context
The DCC has produced a How to guide on writing DMPs and developed a tool to help
DMP Online is a tool to help researchers write plans. It pulls together the various requirements and relevant support to make the process easier. So, how does it work…
At the outset you’re asked to select templates that are appropriate for your context e.g. funder templates if applying for funding, disciplinary or institutional ones etc
You’re then presented with a template which draws out relevant questions from the DCC Checklist together with custom guidance
DMP Online version 3 has just been released (May 2012) and it brings significant added functionality to the tool You can now layer different templates to meet various requirements at once, an API is being developed and boilerplate text can be added.
Institutional versions of DMP Online can also be provided – just select the questions you want to include, add your branding etc Options for customisation are available in Martin’s blog post
You can also add local guidance, links to support staff at your uni and suggested answers where appropriate
