This document provides information on fish farming in Maharashtra, India. It discusses selecting an appropriate site with available water and soil composition. Pond construction details are outlined including minimum viable sizes of 0.2 to 1 hectare and 4 feet deep. Steps for pond preparation include drying, liming, and manuring. Stocking details are provided for fingerlings of Katla, Rohu, and Mrigel fish. Information is also given on water management, supplementary feeding, harvesting, and the economics of fish farming for a 900 square meter pond over 10-12 months.
2. FISH FARMING IN MAHARASHTRA
NAME: RAJESH K. GAVIT
ROLL.NO:- 27
3. Selection of site
• Site should be selected where water is
available easily.
• Soil should be mixture of sand and clay so
that it has the capacity of retaining the water.
• Alkaline soils are always better for good
growth of fish. Before construction of pond
soil testing must be done
4. Construction of ponds:
•The size and shape of the pond
depends upon the availability of
land and type of production.
•For an economically viable
project, the minimum size of pond
should be between 0.2 to 1 ha. & 4
ft deep.
5. Preparation of ponds
• Drying of pond (ploughing)
• If drying is not possible apply 10 kg mahua
cake or Bleaching powder in 1 to 1.5 ft water.
To kill unwanted fishes like mangur etc.
• Liming of fish pond.( use 10 kg lime/ha)
• After 5-7 days of liming apply 80kg f.y.m., 3kg
S.S.P, 1kg urea. ( for development of plankton)
6. Stocking details
• Rate of stocking usually depends on the fertility of the pond
and the measures adopted to increase its biological
productivity by manuring, artificial feeding, monitoring of
growth and maintaining good health of fish.
Stocking for 50 mm fingerlings:-
1. Katla:- 1125 pcs/ha.
2. Rohu:-1500 pcs /ha.
3. Mrigel:-1125 pcs/ha. ,
i.e 3:4:3 ratio
9. Upper Level Fish:
Katla, silver carp and the big head carp are of
upper level fish. They eat food from top level.
Many green little plant, insects are eaten by
them from upper level.
Mid Level Fish:
Fish like rohu eat food like small insects from
this level.
Low Level Fish:
Mrigel, mirror carp are of low level fish. They
eat insects, snail, oyster, small plant from this
level.
10. Supplementary feeding:
• For Indian Carps ( katla, rohu, mrigel) rice
bran, Groundnut cake & Wheat bran we have
to mix it according to required protein
content.
• First two to three month give feed 6-7% of
there weight.
• After Three month give feed 4-5% of there
weight.
11. Harvesting
• Harvesting is conveniently done either by drag
netting or by cast netting (useful for small ponds)
or by draining the pond.
• Supplementary feeding is stopped a day before
the date of harvesting.
• Harvesting is done during cool morning hours as
per the demand of market.
• The best time of harvesting is December and
January which are non-productive months for fish
farming.
