1. The cast credits are shown on a black background using a fun yet simple font. This could be
seen as a convention as often the casting credits do role on the opening sequence of a
romance. The font doesn't have any implications of the target audience as despite its
feminine touch its simple and doesn’t create the idea this is a ‘girly’ movie.
2. There is jazzy music played over the top of the opening sequence credits. This immediately
indicates that the genre is romance as jazz music has implications of fancy restaurants and
dates etc.
This fun romantic music used is a convention of romance movies.
3. This two shot of the elderly couple is the first shot of people in the movie. It shows
them to be at equal level which indicates that throughout the movie men and women
will have equality within their relationships.
4. This shot shows that the beginning is set at a university which establishes the age of the characters
and therefore could be an implication to the target audience- who will relate to the story more?
However establishing the year signifies that there is an importance to the time this took place which
enforces the idea that the story will be a journey through time.
This could be seen as a convention as romances often include the time and place to indicate the
development of the relationship through time.
5. This establishing shot shows a university surrounded by trees and people. This reveals an
ordinary/ day to day scene which is what you would expect of a romance as one of the
conventions is that it is set within everyday life.
In the bottom right corner you can see a couple, this would further indicate that this is a
conventional romance movie.
6. Kissing is not a rarity in a romance based movie therefore this close up is a fairly obvious
convention.
Kissing tends to be frequent occurrence in romances whether the movie is intended to
be conventional or not.
7. Its inevitable that in a romance there will be a ‘third wheel’ therefore this
could a representation of how people who have a boyfriend/girlfriend believe
they are of a higher status compared to those who don’t; this shot reveals the
third character to enter the shot as looking up at the couple.
