This digipack represents the genre rock because as we can see in the pictures the whole band can be seen standing casually which is seen quite a lot in rock music when they are promoting their digipacks, which is illustrated in this digipak by the oasis, they are also a rock band and they are just standing very casual which is conventional in rock digipacks. However you would also get many rock digipacks that is livelier and colourful nevertheless the simplicity of Linkin Parks digipack is seen lot. This is important because it shows the music is serious which is what rock is all about, they don’t want to make the album cover seem silly as it would be against how rock is represented. However in pop for example it is much more lively and colourful which can be seen in the Michael Jackson album ‘This Is It’. The Mise-en-scene also represents rock because if you look at for example the front covers the words Linkin Park is coloured in black. This is associated with rock because rock music is dark, simple and meaningful which in many ways also is the colour black. The way this Linking Park digipack is appealing to the audience is because of the trademark way in which they write Linkin Park the way the word Linkin Park is shown is always the same as it can be seen in the front cover of their digipack and the CD’s. This is important with the fans because they associate Linkin Park with these kinds of trademarks signs. Also as it can be seen in other rock digipack or CD covers like oasis the way write oasis is a trademark because they write it in that style in every CD cover and magazine cover etc. Also in the front cover and CD we can see their trade mark sign with the letters L and P joined together again this is a trademark sign which appeals to the audience.
Originally the album name Minutes to Midnight is a reference to the Doomsday clock. Midnight in this content means the destruction of Earth by nuclear war, so the closer to midnight the closer to the end. The picture which is long shot from a low angle also represents the end because only water can be seen which maybe represents the end of Earth or maybe they are minutes away from end of the Earth. This text does have cultural narrative because society also believes that war will bring an end to Earth which is what Linkin Parks album name ‘minutes to midnight’ is representing. However only hardcore Linkin Park fans would understand the narrative other people would just look at the pictures and just see 6 men strangely standing on the water.
Linkin Park have represented themselves in a clever way because clearly none of their faces can be seen all that can be seen is the six of them standing in which we can’t make out who is who in the bands. Also their front cover has no pictures of the band just the word Linkin Park. This sets out the message that they are serious hard working band not interested much in fame but producing decent music.
Obviously the target audience for Linkin Park is rock fans but more importantly it’s for existing Linkin Park fans. Because the cover just has the trade mark Linkin Park signs which all Linkin Park fans associate them with, also the digipack is simple therefore it isn’t exactly targeted new audiences just the fans they already have. The way they do this is by having a normal CD with all the tracks of the album, but also a DVD with exciting features like making of Minutes To Midnight, quot;
What I've Donequot;
music video, making of quot;
What I've Donequot;
music video, portable audio files for all tracks, make your own ringtone for quot;
What I've Donequot;
with URTONE, plus toolkit with photo gallery, screensavers, lyrics. Only existing fans would be interested in this sort of things which is how Linkin Park attracted their audiences.
