Different types of
genres
By Shannon Nash
The Genres
 There are many different types of genres in music with most people not
realising the different genres. Most people only regard the obvious as genres
e.g. pop, rock and rap.
 Through this power point I will be explaining to you all of the different
genres(well some!) and how they are evidence in music videos, I will also
analyse a few music videos so you can see the stereotypical parts that make it
that genre.
Indie
 Most common throughout the 1990’s and with it being most suited to band like Nirvana, who
took off as the most famous Indie band up until the death of Kurt Cobain.
 Most Indie music videos are performative and don’t have high tec music videos, usually they
consist of the band performing at one of their gigs or in a studio with soft lighting and low
key lighting

 However the song “Common People” by Pulp is different from most music videos as it tells a
storyline rather than it just being performative and this allows for audience to experience
different music videos to conventional indie music videos

Pop
 The most common for narrative based videos and the best for heart felt break up
songs. With Taylor Swift topping the charts time after time for another break-up
classic, and all of her videos tell a story.
 Like most pop videos there is a cross between performative based and narrative
based and that leads to them being most popular because they highlight the fact
that they are the most popular in current times.

 The second clip is Hello Adele, this is a very different pop video because it looks
like it is just performative as most shots are just lip syncing but it fits in the
category because it has a repetitive chorus which entices a larger pop audience.
Brit pop
 This is a genre that was only common in England and was where bands like
Oasis and Blur became most popular. Again it was most famous in the 1990’s
and is a combination of indie music in the way it sounds and looks but it gets
it name pop from the era it was created in as pop videos were most popular.
 Even though it was only popular in the UK it created a huge impact and
shaped the way people listened to this specific music and allowed for artists
of this genre to become widely known, however it died out when bands split
up
