8. What do we know about Carthage?
• The ancient city of Carthage was founded by
the Phoenicians on the north coast of Africa
in about 800 bc. Until it was overthrown by
Rome in 146 bc, Carthage was the trading
center of the western Mediterranean Sea.
Today Carthage is a suburb of Tunis, the
capital of Tunisia.

10. In the year 654 a.C. the Carthaginians
discovered Ibiza and founded the city of Ibiza.
The Carthaginian people come from Phenicia,
and they took the name of Carthaginians after
they founded the city of Carthage (located
geographically in what is now Tunisia). The
Romans called them Punic in Latin.

13. The Carthaginians were basically merchants, and
Ibiza became a very important commercial
center. Ibiza was popular for its great port and
big walls .
The people traded with salt in those days.
The salt was called “white gold”.
The Salinas built by the Carthaginians are still
used today to obtain salt from the sea water, by
means of evaporation.
