  5. Making a sentence that makes sense (or, using correct grammar)
  6. This is how to make a sentence An English sentence has 3 main parts: • The subject-NOUN (what the sentence is about) • The verb (what the subject is or what the subject is doing) • The object-NOUN (to whom or to what)
  7. Subject or Noun A noun is 3 things: • A person (or people) • A place • A thing
  8. A Subject or NOUN can be a person (or people):
  9. A Subject or NOUN can be a place *a city *a country *a home
  10. A Subject or NOUN can be a thing
  11. Rule 1: A and An usually go before a noun We use “a” before a noun that begins with a consonant. We use “an” before a noun that begins with a verb.
  12. Rule 2: A and The We use “a” before a noun that is not a proper name. Examples: a city (any city), a beach (any beach) We use “the” before a noun that names a specific thing and is a proper noun. Examples: the city I was born in, the beach where I go fishing We don’t use either when a proper name follows. Examples: I live in Kunming City. I swim at Huntington Beach. There are exceptions!

  38. There are different kinds of subjects for a sentence • Nouns can be a subject of a sentence. My dog eats bananas. • Pronouns can be a subject. They like to swim. • Even verbs can be the subject of a sentence when you add –ing at the end. Camping is very fun.
