The Olympic games are multidisciplinary
sporting events involving athletes from
around the world, in ancient Greece they
were dedicated to the god Zeus. There are
two types of Olympics: Summer Olympics and
Winter Olympics each taking place every
four years. The organization responsible for
conducting them is the International Olympic
Committee (for short, IOC).
The Olympic symbol
 consists of five rings
 that represent the
 five continents of
 the world: Africa,
 America, Asia,
 Europe and Oceania.
 They are intertwined
 to symbolize
 friendship between
 all countries.
WENLOCK: It’s name is inspired
by Much Wenlock in Shropshire,
England. Wenlock has 5 bracelets
on his wrist. Each is the color of
each of the rings Olympic. It has
three points on it’s head
representing the 3 places on the
podium. The pattern in his body is
the logo of the games, everyone
stands for London in 2012. His
face is the shape of the roof of
Olympic Stadium.
It’s name comes from Stoke
Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury,
Buckinhamshire, England hosted
the Stoke Mandeville Games,
which were inspiration for the
Paralympic Games. Mandeville
uses a stopwatch on his wrist
pink, which reads 0:20:12. His
head which looks like a helmet,
has three points in blue, red and
green, representing the
Paralympic symbol.
The 2012 Olympics will be covering twenty-six to
thirty-nine disciplines. With respect to the previous
edition, there will be two sports removed (baseball
and softball). However, there will be some new
sports: women's boxing, in cycling track and tennis
will be added in the mixed doubles competition..
Also the number of competitions for each gender
shall be five, unlike in the last Olympics where it was
five for men and three for women,
CYCLING: The road
 race usually takes
 place from spring to
 autumn in the
 northern hemisphere.
This sport is played on
 natural grass or
 artificial (synthetic
 lawn with water or
 sand) without skates
 of any kind, with a
 stick, which has a
 flat face and a curve
 with a solid plastic
 ball and penalty
 cards: green , yellow
 and red
It is a team sport
played between two
teams of 11 players each
and four referees
dealing with the rules
that are properly
followed. It is widely
considered the world's
most popular sport
because it involved some
270 million people

between representatives from cities in Ancient Greece. The events
were mainly athletic, but also included combat and chariot racing.
In this era the Olympics were of fundamental religious importance
as the events were held in parallel with rituals to honor Zeus and
Pelops, mythical kings of Olympia- the location of the original
Olympic ‘stadium’. The Olympics were held every four years and
this period, known as Olympiad, was used by the ancient Greeks
as a way of time measurement. Winning an event was of great
value and recognition as the winners were idolised by the Greeks
on a national level. The winners were also immortalized through
the writing of poems and construction of statues. Many winners
are documented in ancient Greek myths and legends, stories still
  being told to this day.

• The current Olympic Games were
inspired in the eighth century BC when
the ancient Greeks organized games in
the city of Olympia. Then in the
nineteenth century, the idea of making
some events similar to those organized in
  Ancient Greece, were mentally
materialize thanks to the efforts of the
French nobleman Pierre Fredy, Baron de
Coubertin. The first edition of the so-
called Olympics of the modern era was
held in Athens, capital of Greece.

• Basketball is a team sport, the
objective being to shoot a ball
   through a basket horizontally
  positioned to score points while
following a set of rules. Usually, two
teams of five players play on a
  marked rectangular court with a
basket at each width end. Basketball
is one of the world's most popular and
  widely viewed sports.
• Water polo, or Water ball, is a team
water sport. The playing team consists
of six field players and one goalkeeeper.
The winner of the game is the team that
scores the most goals. Game play
  involves swimming, treading water.
players pass the ball while being
defended by opponents, and score by
throwing the ball into a net defended by
  a goalie.
• Acrobatic gymnastics is a competitive partner
sport combining the strength, flexibility and
technical precision of gymnastics with the grace
and musicality of dance as well as the trust and
camaraderie of a dedicated partnership. All
acrobats perform in pairs or groups and must
specify a level or be within the above age
categories. The events that acrobats perform in
  are:
• women's pairs (two females);
• men's pairs (two males);
• mixed pairs (a male base and a female top);
• women's groups (three females);
• men's groups/quad (four males).
Wenlock has 5 friendship bracelets on his wrist. Each color is
one of the Olympic rings. It has three points on it’s head
representing the 3 places on the podium. The logo of the
games in his body symbolizes the world moving towards
London in 2012. His face is the shape of the roof of
  Olympic Stadium.
The name of Mandeville, meanwhile, refers to Stoke Mandeville
in Buckinghamshire. There, in the year 1948-the same day
the Olympic Games opened in London, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann
organized a competition for veterans of World War II who
suffered spinal cord injuries, which laid the foundation for
  Paralympic Games.
• The Olympic Games are important to us
because the countries join in peace and
anyone can compete. However they can not
join if they are discapacitate or injuried in any
way, thats why the Parolimpic Games were
  invented.
The Olympic Games, are a
  major international event
   featuring summer and
   winter sports, in which
   thousands of athletes
  participate in a variety of
 competitions. The Olympic
Games are considered to be
the world’s foremost sports
competition and more than
  200 nations participate.
• How did they begin?
• Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held
in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the
4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894.
The IOC has since become the governing body of
the Olympic Movement whose structure and actions
are defined by the Olympic Charter.
• HERE ARE SOME OF THE DIFFERENT SPORTS PLAYED
  IN THE OLYMPICS:
In hockey, players try to get points by hitting an object
into the other team's goal with a stick. There are two
main ways that hockey is played. Hockey can refer
   to:
• Ice hockey is played on ice. Players on each team
wear ice skates and try to hit a small rubber
disc called a hockey puck into the other team's goal.
There are 6 players on each team. It can be played
indoors or outdoors, but professionals play indoors
in arenas. Ice hockey is one of the most popular
   sports in the world.
• Field hockey is played with a ball
on grass or Astroturf. Teams have 11 players each.
Field hockey is only played outdoors, but there is
   Indoor Field Hockey.
• Basketball is a very popular sport worldwide,
played with a round, orange ball that bounces.
The ball is also called a basketball. The sport was
invented in Springfield, Massachusetts, by a
professor named Dr. James Naismith in the year
  1891.
• Basketball is now the second most popular sport
in the world. It has been played in the
summer Olympic Games since 1936. Women's
basketball is also a popular sport, though it does
not receive nearly as much attention.
Synchronized Swimming…
• is a hybrid form of swimming, dance and
  gymnastics, consisting of swimmers (either
solos, duets, trios, or teams) performing a
synchronized routine of elaborate moves in
the water, accompanied by music. Olympic
and World Championship competition is not
open to men, but other international and
  national competitions allow male competitors.
The mascots for the 2012 Olympic
games are the one-eyed characters
‘Wenlock' and ‘Mandeville‘. They
were created from the last two
drops of British steel used for the
London 2012
Olympic stadium: 'that’s why we’re
so shiny, reflecting the people,
places and things
we meet along the way as we travel
around the UK'. ‘Wenlock' and
‘Mandeville' are just as flexible as
the rest of the 2012 identity,
with their appearance changing to
incorporate different elements of
the branding elements.
'my name is inspired by much wenlock
in shropshire, a town that is at the
   heart of Olympic history.
in the 19th century, baron Pierre de
Coubertin was invited there to watch
   the ‘much wenlock games’
inspired by the Olympic games of
   ancient Greece. De Coubertin was
inspired by the wenlock games too,
and went on to found the modern
   Olympic movement. The much
wenlock games are still held annually
to this day! ‘The light on my head is
inspired by the lights on London's
iconic black taxis. the shape of the
front of my head is based on the
shape of the Olympic stadium roof.
my eye is a camera lens,
capturing everything I see as I go..'
‘My name is inspired by Stoke
 Mandeville in Buckinghamshire,
 the birthplace of the Paralympics
 games.
On the same day as the opening
 ceremony of the London 1948
 Olympic games, Sir Ludwig
 Guttmann
held his own sport competition in
 Stoke Mandeville for World War
 II soldiers with spinal injuries.
 the Stoke Mandeville games
grew and grew until they became
 the Paralympics Games.'
Why are the Olympic so important?

One of the reasons that the Olympic Games are so
important to all countries is because that it is the
only place where they can show how tough their
country is a certain sport and because it is a way
that countries can unite and come together.
