      • Ray Kurzweil
      • February 3, 2009
      Singularity University
    1. Information Technologies (of all kinds) double their power (price performance, capacity, bandwidth) every year
    2. Moore’s Law is one example of many…
    3. The Biotechnology revolution: the intersection of biology with information technology
    4. Every form of communications technology is doubling price-performance, bandwidth, capacity every 12 months
    5. Reverse Engineering the Brain: The ultimate source of the templates of intelligence
      • Gathering data from multiple studies, Javier F. Medina, Michael D. Mauk, and their colleagues at the University of Texas Medical School devised a detailed bottom-up simulation of the cerebellum.
      • Their simulation includes over 10,000 simulated neurons and 300,000 synapses, and includes all of the principal types of cerebellum cells.
      The Cerebellum
    6. 2029: An intimate merger
      • $1,000 of computation = 1,000 times the human brain
      • Reverse engineering of the human brain completed
      • Computers pass the Turing test
      • Nonbiological intelligence combines
        • the subtlety and pattern recognition strength of human intelligence, with
        • the speed, memory, and knowledge sharing of machine intelligence
      • Nonbiological intelligence will continue to grow exponentially whereas biological intelligence is effectively fixed
    7. SINGULARITY UNIVERSITY Preparing Humanity for Accelerating Technological Change
      • You have just heard an update on the Singularity, and it’s on track….
      • Today, we’re publicly announcing the creation of an academic institution called Singularity University
      • Its students and faculty will study these technologies, with an emphasis on their interactions, and help to guide the process for the benefit of humanity and its environment
Dr. Ray Kurzweil, Chancellor & Co-Founder Dr. Peter Diamandis, Vice-Chancellor & Co-Founder Introduction
      • Singularity University aims to assemble, educate and inspire a cadre of leaders who strive to understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing technologies and apply, focus and guide these tools to address humanity’s grand challenges.
      Mission & Vision
      • Assemble the best and brightest graduate/post-graduate students across the fields of bio, nano, info and AI.
      • Teach the cutting-edge research and projected developments, in bio, nano, info, AI, and related technologies, with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary interactions between these fields.
      • Focus on Humanity’s greatest challenges .
      • To build and maintain a global network of the alumni and faculty of SU to enable them to remain connected and collaborate more efficiently to advance the University’s goals.
      • To promote these advances through the creation of new businesses, new research directions in academia, and new collaborations.
      • To communicate the critical effects, risks, and potential benefits of these fields to the public.
      Objectives of SU
    8. SU Founding Meeting @ NASA Ames - Sept 2008; 50 leaders from the Bay Area Founding Meeting Sept ‘08
      • 501(c)3 non-profit
      • Permanently based at NASA Ames (Mountain View).
      • Partners : Google, NASA
      • First program in Summer 2009 (June – Aug)
      • Curriculum almost finalized
      SU Status/Structure
      • Summer Studies Program ( 9-week SSP ) for top graduate and postgraduate students worldwide to learn about the various cross-disciplinary technologies (bio, nano, info, AI, etc.) leading to the Singularity.
      • Executive Program – Level 1 ( 10-day EP ) for mid-level managers/leaders to better understand the convergence happening in various cross-disciplinary technologies and how this may affect their planning and day-to-day operations.
      • Executive Program – Level 2 ( 3-day EP ) for C-level executives to give a strategic review of the rapidly changing landscape of business created by accelerating technological change.
SU will have three educational programs starting in 2009: SU Programs
        • The 10 main academic tracks include:
          • Future Studies & Forecasting
          • Networks & Computing Systems
          • Biotechnology & Bioinformatics
          • Nanotechnology
          • Medicine, Neuroscience & Human Enhancement
          • AI, Robotics, & Cognitive Computing
          • Energy & Ecological Systems
          • Space & Physical Sciences
          • Policy, Law & Ethics
