This is a presentation I gave at the Kenya ICT Board's Tandaa Symposium on Local Internet and Mobile Digital Content. The presentation looked at the Internet and Mobile growth since 1995 when the Internet first started in Kenya.

6. In today's value cost US$ 793 million to build when books closed in 1902.

7. Ultimately drove massive economic development in East Africa, and its still in use to this day.

8. So, what about digital local content?

9. We've come a long way....

10. A long way indeed...

11. To get this far...

13. Expensive (Kes. 20,000.00 per month). Store and forward email.

14. Used BBS platfoms mostly.

15. “ Real” Internet access (web) was rare. Mostly email and forums.

16. The Fax machine was our biggest competitor.

18. Leased lines we're few and expensive. KPTC “owned” the last mile.

19. Regulation was highly restrictive.

20. ISP's we're few and spent a lot on bandwidth per month.

21. But it grew, and grew, and grew.....

23. ICT Legislation passed in 2009.

24. 4m internet users. 18M mobile users. 2m million mobile internet users .

25. Mobile IS Internet for many Kenyans.

26. Mobile Money is (now) well entrenched. 8+ million on M-Pesa.

27. Last mile is improving, and evolving.

28. Internet access costs dropping.

30. Lots of local content already exists, but its not online. It has to be digitized, edited, packaged and delivered on the Internet and mobile.

31. Original content created specifically for digital channels will be key.

32. Content > Interest > Growth > Value!

34. Context – Is it interesting to me?

35. Relevance – Does it matter to me?

36. Quality – Is it of a high enough standard for me?

37. Cost – Is it affordable enough for me to access?

38. ALL of the above have to be met!
