This document summarizes and analyzes several Filipino films using communication theories. It discusses three films - Kabisera, Blue Bustamante, and Woman of the Ruins - analyzing scenes from each film and the communication theories they illustrate, such as reinforcement theory, expectancy violation theory, and attribution theory. It also analyzes the restored film Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?, noting how it symbolizes the Philippines' experience with colonialism and the theories it demonstrates, such as reinforcement theory, elaboration likelihood model theory, and attribution theory. The document examines how each film uses communication theories to convey its messages.

KABISERA
Two days of watching original Filipino films was amazing. Out of six movies that I watched
there are three movies that I must say my favorites. And those movies applied different
Communication Theories.
First is in the film Kebisera. There is a scene in the film where Andres, the main character
and his family were having dinner because his daughter and her fiancé visited from the city.
They were having a great time. Until his son AJ talked about entering University and having
their contradicting opinions about it. Then Andres suddenly changed his mood and got mad.
From this scene, Reinforcement Theory by Hovland, Janis, and Kenny is applied. Attitude
changes result from an opinion change produced through reinforcement in areas such as
attention, comprehension and acceptance. There was also a scene where Attribution theory by
Heider was applied. It is when Jose became paranoid about being killed. This change of behavior
was due to receiving a bullet which means that he is a target of assassination by the Muslims.
Interpersonal Deception Theory by Buller and Burgoon was applied in the scene where Andres,
Jose, and Pedro found out that Kulot, secretly talked to the police and said that there is a large
Drug marketing around the area. Then the three confronted Kulot. He denied what he did just to
not be killed by the three.
BLUE BUSTAMANTE
Second is the film Blue Bustamante. The scene where George and his wife was exchanging
letters to each other. George pretends to his family that he is still an engineer in Japan which is
actually not true. Interpersonal Deception Theory by Buller and Burgoon was applied in this
scene. And then, the scene where George and a Japanese girl named Naomi went to a Filipino
restaurant in Japan and talked in their own languages. They are both talking casually but did not
understand each other ended up in a misunderstanding. Expectancy Violation Theory is applied
on the scene of the film. Then lastly, the scene when George discovered that Force Five was
airing in the Philippines and his son Kiko was a fan of the show especially Blue force where
George was working as the double stuntman of the character. Reinforcement Theory is applied in
this scene. George changed his attitude towards his job because he found out that Kiko, his son
idolizes Blue Force and became committed in his work.
2. WOMAN OF THE RUINS
Reinforcement Theory was applied followed by the scenario where Sabel found out that
Pasyon was so obsessed with his wife Maria. He caught Pasyon harassing Maria. Made her want
to help Maria in escaping from Pasyon. The scenario where Maria gave birth to her child, Sabel
became her friend and took care of the child. This is when Social Penetration Theory was
applied. Their relationship became deeper as the time goes by. Lastly is the scene where Maria
and Sabel were raped by the group of men. Sabel became mad because of what happened. This is
where Attribution Theory takes place in the scenario. Pasyon, Sol and Olga found out that
because Maria and Sabel were became mad because of the rape incident.

GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON?
The restored film Ganito kami ngayon, paano kayo ngayon? by the ABS-CBN archives
was an eye-opening film. Ganito kami ngayon , paano kayo ngayon? shows us the reality during
different eras where the Philippines were in colonization period. The message of the story is to
tell the viewers especially the Filipino people to know what is a Filipino truly means as it follows
the life of Nicholas, the main character in the film. The creator of the film Ganito kami ngayon ,
paano kayo ngayon? made Nicholas symbolize Filipinos during the era. Just like the Philippines,
Nicholas was deceived, Loved, and used his innocence by the foreigners. To put it in a nutshell,
the film Ganito kami ngayon , paano kayo ngayon?,s is that we, the ones who lives in the
Philippines, who loves our country are the real Filipino people.
Just like in the first paragraph, Nicholas symbolizes Philippines. A innocent man who
came from the province to the city to start a new life. Nicholas passed different periods during
the film. First is that, he was deceived and trusted by Spaniards. And helped by the Americans
which turns out to be an enemy. And fought against his freedom from the foreign bloods.
Filipinos just like Nicholas are innocent during the colonialization era.
The theories that I notice while I was watching Ganito kami ngayon , paano kayo
ngayon? are Reinforcement Theory, Elaboration Likelihood Model Theory, and Attribution
Theory. First is Reinforcement Theory by Hovland, Janis, and Kelly. Attitude changes result
from an opinion change produced through reinforcement in areas such as attention,
comprehension and acceptance. Who is the real Filipino? That’s the question that Nicholas wants
to find the answer. His attitude towards being a Filipino changes everytime he hears an answer
from different persons that he asked. Once he asked a Chinese, his perception changed to being a
Filipino are the people that was born in the Philippines. And then he asked a Lawyer, then his
attitude change to being a Filipino are the people who are living in the Philippines. Until at the
end of the film he concluded and had his resolve. The second theory is Elaboration Likelihood
Model Theory by Petty and Cacioppo. The theory deals with persuasion. In the film, He was
persuaded by Father Santi to get his son from the province by elaborating or explaining the
frail’s situation. That is the central route, uses message elaboration, and can produce a major
positive attitude change. While instead of being with the girl he loves, he changed his attitude
and he was persuaded to join the Revolution by using his senses. Based on what he sees during
the film. And that is the peripheral route, uses six different message irrelevant cues to illicit a
quick response with a minor shift in attitude. Lastt is the Attribution Theory by Heider.
Attribution Theory attempts to explain causes of behavior. It attempts to explain the causes of
people's behavior and attributing or explaining reasons as to why people behave the way they do.
In the film, explains the behavior of the Filipinos during colonialization period. It is because they
want freedom from the Spaniards so as from the Americans and Japanese. And that, what I think
Communication Theories that are applied in the restored version of the film Ganito kami ngayon
, paano kayo ngayon?. Thank you.
