PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education) is an important subject in primary school for several reasons. It teaches children about health, well-being, safety, diet, relationships and being physically active through fun activities. PDHPE also helps children develop skills to make informed decisions and supports them in leading healthier, more productive lives. However, many children are not meeting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. PDHPE aims to educate children on adopting healthy, active lifestyles.

2. Why is PDHPE important in
Primary School?
0 It is recommended that children between 5 to 18
years of age should do a minimum of 60 minutes of
physical activity everyday.
The 2007-2008 NSW Population Health Survey found
that only about a quarter of children participated in
60 minutes of physical activity every day (Healthy
Kids, 2014).
0 Physical activity and education is important for a
child’s health, well-being, lifestyle and social
interactions and relationships.

0 By teaching PDHPE in schools we as teachers can
educate children and increase knowledge and
awareness about factors such as:
- safety
- the importance of a balanced diet
- the importance of close relationships
- personal development
- and fun ways to get active and be healthy

abilities and assist them in making informed decisions
as an individual and a part of a cooperative group.

can support and lead them on the path to a healthier,

safe and productive lifestyle
- allows for positive, active experiences
- supports children in making strong relationships
- teaches them the importance of adopting strong
values
