2. Why PDHPE?
In our changing society, it is important to be aware of
personal health choices so students can lead a lifestyle that
enables maximum mental, physical, social and spiritual
wellbeing.
Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of global
mortality and can be reduced and avoided by engaging in
physical activity in the home or schooling environment.
When students are well informed on health issues and have a
sense of control about the decisions they make, they are
more likely to have positive relationships, improved quality of
life and less illness.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
(PDHPE) is one of six key learning areas in all NSW schools and
plays a role in the development of students’
knowledge, understandings and practical skills that lead to
better health
It provides students will a fun theoretical and practical
atmosphere to learn in
3. The importance of PDHPE
Valuing self and others
PDHPE not only teaches students to take control of their
lives, but also teaches students to value difference and care
for other members of the community.
Promote physical activity
Regular activity is essential for physical growth, development
and maintenance of health to enhance bone
development, control obesity and improves psychological
health as well as the immune system.
Enables well informed decision making for responsible
action
Teaches students to make decisions in regards to their own
lifestyle. Including examples such as deciding to eat
healthier, or effective refusal skills when they were exposed to
drugs.
4. PDHPE is inclusive - one size
doesn’t fill all
Teachers personally modify lessons in order to cater
to all students whether they are talented, gifted or
require special needs.
All students will learn:
- Active lifestyle
- Personal health choices
- Safe living
- Interpersonal relationships
- Growth and development
- Dance
- Gymnastics
- Games and sport
5. What would the primary
school curriculum look like
without PDHPE?
Students will find it challenging to develop knowledge
and understanding of skills, values and attitudes that are
needed to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives.
Students will lack values and attitudes that deal with
appreciating healthy and socially just ways of living
Skills will not be developed properly. Such as decision
making, communicating, moving with competence and
confidence and forming and maintaining relationships
Importantly, students will be unable to develop
knowledge on ways to enhance personal and
community health and wellbeing and appraise
movement.
So… Primary PDHPE is very important in the
development of young students.
6. PDHPE is fun and beneficial!
Students are able to learn relevant
content in addition to enjoying
themselves during PDH and PE lessons.
