Nadia Birch created a questionnaire to get audience feedback on a music video she produced. She asked questions about gender, age, genre, makeup/costume, narrative, lighting/contrast, lip syncing, and special effects.
She learned that her target female audience responded positively to the pop genre, female artist, and focus on star image. The most engaged age group was 16-25. Feedback showed elements of indie and soul genres that could be further explored. Makeup, costume, and star persona were effective but narrative responses varied. Lighting and contrast professionally highlighted elements while lip syncing could be improved with more attention to detail. Special effects enhanced the narrative and kept the video interesting.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
The image is an example of the questionnaire I created for my audience to fill
out in order for me to get a detailed response so that I can analyse the
strengths and weaknesses of my video. It is also useful for me to see whether
my audience understood my ideologies.
2. My initial intention for conducting the audience feedback questionnaire was
to see whether my target audience of females had a positive response to the
genre of the song and whether an impression had been made through the
choice of artist and her personality and star persona. I additionally wanted to
explore whether the special effects and lip syncing added a professional
element to the production and if not what could have been improved in order
to improve my skills for further production opportunities. The feedback
within the question ranged from praise to constructive criticisms which were
both helpful and as the questionnaire questions were open ended. This
enabled me to receive detailed answers that gave examples that supported
their comments.
Male or Female-
In asking this question I learned that the pop genre that I chose and the use of
a female artist has helped me in gaining a female audience and that the focus
on star image through make-up and costume has benefited me in gaining my
target audience.
Age-
I included the age as I wanted to explore the main age range that my target
audience so that for future marketing purposes, I would be able to aim more
directly towards a certain age range. I found that the most popular age group
that were particularly drawn and responded to the song and video were,
16-25. This response showed me that I was successful in creating an image
and choosing a song that had catchy and relatable lyrics which a female
audience responded positively to.
Genre-
I have learned through questioning my audience on their perception on the
genre of the song that as well as pop being the majority choice there has also
been responses that believe that there is an indie and soul element. I am now
able to see this as the use of guitars in the instrumentals of the sing emit the
genre of indie, although they have not been included as I did not want a
hybrid genre to confuse my audience. Additionally the feeling of the genre
soul is visually evident through the accentuation of emotions, such as the
teardrops expressing sadness and the backing vocals that are typical of the
classic soul genre which are accentuated through the rhythm of the
photographs. However I have learned that to improve I could have included
more visual elements of to create a hybrid of genres as I can assume I would
gain a larger audience from three popular genres.
3. Make-up/Costume/Star Persona-
The response regarding the effectiveness of make-up, costume and star
persona was positive. The most popular element of the make-up was the
polka dot eyelashes as they linked to my ancillary texts and the high heels
accentuated the colourful nature of ‘Rox’. Voyeurism was also mentioned as
being effective as it depicted a difference from the traditional typecast female
and gave the video a modern look. The costume and make-up matched the
pop genre and reflected the confident persona expressed by ‘Rox’.
Narrative-
The narrative I learned emitted two main perspectives, the majority
understood that the lyrics reflected the soundtrack yet were portrayed in a
sarcastic and ironic way. The audience response also made me learn that
detaching ‘Rox’ from the stereotypical way in which love is portrayed was
successful as it depicts a development that stands out against the prosaic
typecast of the theme of love. On the other hand a minority thought that the
lyrics did not depict the level of irony yet explored the sadness and loneliness
which is what the lyrics without being used in any symbolic form express.
Lighting/Contrast, Use of Colour
The use of lighting I learned from feedback that the flashing lights were seen
as a technique that reflected her emotion and also highlighted her vocals at
specific parts of the song. The use of contrast was the main element of video
that gave brought out the colours in the make-up/ costume and gave the
video and overall professional look.
Lip syncing-
The effectiveness overall was deemed believable and created a realism within
the production. However one response stated that at times the lip syncing fell
behind at one point for a few seconds, therefore I have learned when editing I
should be more critical and pay more attention to the smaller details to create
a more successful product.
Special Effects-
The impression that special effects gave was an element of creativity and kept
the video interesting while still reflecting the colourful nature of the star
persona. They also enhanced the narrative of a photo shoot and flowed with
the use of pictures.
