1. Unit 4: Media Audiences
and Products
By: Jonathan Newton
2. In media , why might we group or
classify audiences in this manner?
In media we use this system to workout
which band you sit in. because of what
you watch
For example if you watch question time
you are a Grade A which is a high grade
for politicians. If you watch Jeremy Kyle
you are a Grade E and are probably
unemployed.
3. How is audience research used in relation to
new media products? (e.g. rating, BARB,
focus groups, questionnaires)
There are lots of ways of researching audiences some
examples are: BARB, questionnaires and ratings chart.
Audience research is used to find out if new media is working
or not.
Also media products which are whishing to start up, use
places like BARB so they can work out which channels to put
there products on. For example if it is a children programme,
they would use BARB to find out which channel they want . It
could be Cbeebies or Disney channel.
4. Using the classifications table and the BARB
website, what can you tell us about your chosen
industry and your product from Unit 21? (who would
like your target audience be?)
I would say that my product is rated C1 and above because
of the quality of my photos.
From that chart I can see that people read The Times, The
Observer and The Guardian. So I would put a advert in these
newspaper because I would get my target audience. I would
also put a advert in magazines such as Vogue, Hello and
Heat because this would get my target audiences.
5. What constraints, codes of practice, and or
regulations does your chosen industry/must
your product follow?
My product has constraints such as copyright laws, lets say if
one of my photos a has a focal point which is a company
other companies may complain about my photo because it
supports there company too much.
There is a governing body for professional photography. It is
called BIPP (the British Institute of Professional Photography)
this is only for professional photography so I don’t think my
photos fall in to the body
None of my photos contain any images which would be in
above a U rating in motion pictures.
6. Create an avatar of an ‘average audience member’ that your
Unit 21 product is aimed at. Consider age, gender, clothing
style, musical tastes, etc.
Choose the jacket because I feel that my
photograph are for a smart casual kind of
man.
I made the man to be in his late
to early 30 because I feel this is
my target audience because they
are in to city landscapes.
I choose the cream jumper because I
feel that my audience are plain and
simple and don’t stand out and are
sophisticated.
7. Look at your final product and list the ways you have aimed
your product at your target audience. Consider content, genre,
language used, narrative, visual images, graphics, fonts,
colours etc.
I have aimed my product by using modern techniques to edit the
photos in Adobe Photoshop
I have given my photos a modern feel by editing them in a
fashionable way Eg;Uptown taxi, with the black background and
the focus point of the in colour taxi.
I have taken landscape photographs of New York which is what
my target audience of 30 years upwards want on there walls in
there homes.
8. Task 1
Using your product, conduct a survey (of at
least 8 people) that aims to gauge audience
opinion of your product.
I made a survey in Google Forms and got my class peers to
fill out the questions. This is my response.
