Grammar 101

Regular and Irregular Verbs
Learning Objectives
● To be familiar with a range of irregular verbs
that is commonly used in writing.
● To avoid mistakes when using irregular verbs
    by following simple rules.
Introduction
● Verbs form an important part of all sentences as
they express the action done by the subject.
● As action markers, they change their forms
regularly in writing to represent the manner
    (aspect) the actions happen.
● Since all sentences have verbs and they change
to show different aspects the action happened,
verb forms are a common source of mistake.
● There are two groups – regular and irregular
verbs – that categorise how verb forms change
as a result of a difference in aspects.
Regular Verbs
● Regular Verbs show past aspects by ending with
    an 'ed' or 'd'.
● Regular verbs are verbs like 'waited', 'played',
'kicked', 'worried' – they change to past aspects
    with an 'ed' or 'd'.
1) She doesn't like to wait for people. (present)
2) She waited for a total of three hours. (past)
3) He plays soccer for the school team. (present)
4) He played soccer for the school team last year.
  (past)
Irregular Verbs
● As their name implies, Irregular Verbs,
however, do not have follow Regular Verbs
when changing to the past aspects.
● When expressing them in the past aspects, they
are either the same or they change their forms
    entirely. For example:
● Present
1) Put/Hit/Cut or bend/build/know/tear
● Past
1) Put/Hit/Cut or bent/built/knew/tore
Simple Rules to Irregular Verbs
           Change
● In the list given to you, the irregular verbs can
    be easily learnt because:
1) There are fewer irregular verbs than regular
verbs. They can be remembered by sight.
2) They usually change one phoneme when
  changing from present to past.
    Bend – bent / build – built / write – wrote
    begin – began / drive – drove / bite – bit
    find – found / choose – chose / dig – dug
Learning Activity
● Without referring to your Learning Guide, are
you able to change for forms of these verbs
    from present to past?
1) Quit
2) Cast
3) Shut
4) Find
5) Shake
6) Let
Learning Activity Answers
● The prsent and past aspects are as follows:
1) Quit – quit
2) Cast – cast
3) Shut – shut
4) Find – found
5) Shake – shook
6) Let – let
Discussion
● Why is it important to learn how some verb
    forms change differently from others?
● What simple rules can we use to remember
    irregular verbs?
In Summary
● Verbs are present in all sentences and they
    change to show different aspects.
● Irregular Verbs can be remembered by sight as
they are few and they usually change in one of
    their phonemes only.
