3. Introduction
● Verbs form an important part of all sentences as
they express the action done by the subject.
● As action markers, they change their forms
regularly in writing to represent the manner
(aspect) the actions happen.
● Since all sentences have verbs and they change
to show different aspects the action happened,
verb forms are a common source of mistake.
● There are two groups – regular and irregular
verbs – that categorise how verb forms change
as a result of a difference in aspects.
4. Regular Verbs
● Regular Verbs show past aspects by ending with
an 'ed' or 'd'.
● Regular verbs are verbs like 'waited', 'played',
'kicked', 'worried' – they change to past aspects
with an 'ed' or 'd'.
1) She doesn't like to wait for people. (present)
2) She waited for a total of three hours. (past)
3) He plays soccer for the school team. (present)
4) He played soccer for the school team last year.
(past)
5. Irregular Verbs
● As their name implies, Irregular Verbs,
however, do not have follow Regular Verbs
when changing to the past aspects.
● When expressing them in the past aspects, they
are either the same or they change their forms
entirely. For example:
● Present
1) Put/Hit/Cut or bend/build/know/tear
● Past
1) Put/Hit/Cut or bent/built/knew/tore
6. Simple Rules to Irregular Verbs
Change
● In the list given to you, the irregular verbs can
be easily learnt because:
1) There are fewer irregular verbs than regular
verbs. They can be remembered by sight.
2) They usually change one phoneme when
changing from present to past.
Bend – bent / build – built / write – wrote
begin – began / drive – drove / bite – bit
find – found / choose – chose / dig – dug
