Design Fundamentals: Unit 1 – Rhythmic Patterns, Repetition & Unity<br />Lesson: Animal Motif Collagraph<br />Essential Question: How do Artists convey personal meaning through 2D design?<br />AOI: Health & social Education<br />Project Objectives: Use rhythmic pattern and repetition of color, line, shape, and texture to create an animal motif collagraph based in emotionalism.<br />Mini-Labs:<br />Introduction to Printmaking & Collagraphs<br />Collagraph Textures & Emotionalism<br />Matisse Research<br />Animal Motifs – Abstraction & Simplification<br />Construction Paper Maquette<br />Eye Motif & Initials Block Print<br />Investigation Journal Expectations:<br />Pre-planning – (3-4 pages) <br />     <br />InformationTechniqueUnit titleEssential QuestionResearch: Draw 3 examples of Matisse’s cut paper designs and explain how he uses repetition & unity in eachExplain and show how design affects your everyday life.Printmaking Terms and Definitions.6 – 8 textures labeled with material and what mood they createConstruction paper maquette with legendEach page must be ‘ACTIVATED’ using alternating complimentary colorsCompositional Layout: Create a border around each pageInformation must be legible!<br />Main Project Materials:<br />7”x10” matt board<br />Pencil<br />Eraser<br />Elmer’s Glue<br />Assorted objects to create texture<br />Block Printing Ink<br />Brayer<br />Main Project Directions:<br />Create a 7”x10” collagraph plate based on the construction paper maquette in your journal.<br />The plate should be no more than 3 layers thick.<br />The plate must have at least 4 textures.<br />Create unity through repetition of line, shape, and texture.<br />Create one successful embossing of your plate.<br />Ink the plate and create an edition of 3 successful prints.   <br />Investigation Journal Expectations:<br />Post-Planning – (2-3 pages) with the following requirements:<br />InformationTechniqueWrite and respond to the essential question.Reflect on new techniques learned: printmakingReflect on your final project: Was it successful?  Why?How does your project relate to the Pre-Planning pages?How does your project relate to the AOI?What new things did you learn?
