Bloom andMasteryLearning• Bloom believed that all children can learnand aimed to demonstrate that through isresearch• Bloom’s Taxonomy has been linked to theidea and goal of mastery learning• Mastery Learning: a model for learning inwhich students continue to gaininformation and knowledge, workingthrough modules or teacher instructiononly after they have mastered the contentof the previous modules• Bloom believed that all children can learngiven the correct conditions for learningand sufficient time• The principal part of creating the correctconditions for learning is by changing themethods of instruction4
5Key Peopleinvolved in TheoryLorin Anderson, a former student of Bloom, revisited thecognitive domain in the learning taxonomy in the mid-nineties and made some changes, with perhaps the twomost prominent ones being, 1) changing the names in thesix categories from noun to verb forms, and 2) slightlyrearranging them (Pohl, 2000).5
6ClassroomImplicationsIn Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Cognitive domain, Bloombelieves there are 6 levels to learning:knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, andevaluation.•In knowledge stage, he believes teacher recite things so thestudents can recall the information.•In comprehension stage, have teachers ask open endedquestions for students to have the freedom to respond how theywant to evaluate comprehension of topic.•In application stage, teacher needs to use concept taught in anew situation so students to apply what they learned to adifferent situation.•In analysis stage, teachers need to give situation to student andhave them come up with how to resolve situation.•In synthesis stage: teacher gives students certain items and askstudents to build something.•In evaluation, teachers should tell their students how they havedone with their work so the students can learn from it.6

The higher the level, the moresophisticated the skill. This in turn alsoallows teachers to set the level theyexpect their students to be at whenassessing their work.
