Multimodal Texts and Desire2Learn
• Multimodal texts, which refer to any text that contains 2 of 5 semiotic
systems of linguistics, auditory, visual, gestural, and spatial, can be
used to provide context for course content and enrich the learning
experience
• D2L FORUMS and D2L NEWS - Embed videos, virtual whiteboard,
games, and other mediums to provide opportunities for adventure
learning, experiential learning, and game-based learning
• Students become active learners when they interact with
multimodal texts; learning is more meaningful
• Here are examples of how I design assessable D2L Forums and News
with embeddable mediums!

Speech choir or choral speaking has a hallowed and proud tradition. The first plays put on by Greeks featuring choruses of speakers. Today, speech choir is a popular teaching tool, as well as a performing art in itself. Speech choir operates like a music choir minus the music. Instead of singing, speech choirs perform spoken-word pieces. It is a powerful art that is experiencing a revival. Conventional Speech Choir - also called “traditional”. Has no use of costumes, nor props, nor choreography the choir simply speaks or reads a literary piece. B. Theatrical Speech Choir - also called “dynamic”. The game story is inspired by the actual history of Taiwan in the 1960s, when the Taiwanese government suppressed its citizens using martial law during the "White Terror" period. The game protagonists, Wei and Ray, wake up in an empty school and attempt to leave the school, while encountering a series of horrific events. The keynote will explore the themes of mass surveillance; suppressing speech; anti-intellectualism; anti-communism; banning of books; education as means of social control; government oppression; government corruption; informing the government/snitching on neighbors; unjust imprisonment; authoritarianism; martial law; rebellion; retribution; karma; and guilt."

Aug. 9, 2019 - This set of slides was presented at the Colorado Learning and Teaching with Technology Conference (COLTT) held at the University of Colorado. The presentation details my pedagogical method of using digital games to teach students how to identify problems in cultural relativism, a normative ethical theory that suggests cultures are the main source of morality, that morality is relative to culture.

The games will invite students to engage with social issues by interacting with the hypothetical playable histories and playable futures, and consider what is at stake for today’s world.
