In this class students will be covering the basic techniques of ceramic construction and wheel throwing. They will explore how clay can be used as a medium for creating functional and non functional pottery projects. And will also be exposed to the visual history of ceramics, including the works of both past and contemporary ceramic artists.
In this class we focus on  learning through a major 21st Century skill: Life and Career Skills  Being Flexible- Dealing with positive praise, setbacks and criticism. Initiative & Self-Direction- Setting goals and managing time. Being able to work independently as well as with others. Social Skills- Knowing when is appropriate to listen and speak. Being respectful and open-minded.
Students after doing a great deal of research on either a ceramic artist, time period or ceramic technique are then to ‘re-create’ a piece following the method of their chosen topic.  Students will be required to hand in a research paper on what topic they have chosen, describing also why they pick that topic and what they methods they plan to use in the direction of their piece. (sketches will also be required) After completing said pieces, students will then divided into groups and have a group discussion on what they feel works best and/or what changes could be made to help the piece.  Later we will all come back together as a class and each group will explain to the entire class what their thoughts and feelings were.
Ceramics is a wonderful way to get students thinking. It allows for free creativity, having to analyze, problem solve and re-evaluate, set goals, communicating, and aesthetics.
